This is my WIP for the COLLAB2021, please feel free to give comments.
My first 2 WIP's of the water wheel. Still not sure if I should go for the left or right one. In Vadim's art it's not so clear. Maybe based on the art style I should go with the right one.
I found some time to work on the wheel. Still some work to do. Tell me what you think.
The string/cord is a really cool idea! It lends a lot of character.
Thanks Beau, still some work to do. First I'll have to get some sleep 😊.
I echo beau, cool idea with the cording. You wheel heads are all making it your own and yet all seem to belong compositionally. Great job! Don't forget to submit for grading tomorrow.
nice work lots of great details already :D
Very nice idea with these cords/ropes. These traditionell construction design goes very well with the art style, I guess
Homework Submission - Week 1 - Water Wheel
Here's my 'blockout', just in time 😅
This will be my basis for all the sculpting I want to do. After that I'll be optimizing my poly count before baking, because at the moment it's way to high .
Haha "blockout", riiiiiight 😅Well, you absolutely decimated my expectations for week 1! You get full points and then some.
I love the unique interpretation too. Imagine how good this is going to look with sculpted accents 😍
You clearly know what you're doing when it comes to modeling. Do you have experience with sculpting and baking normal maps?
theluthier Thanks for your feedback. I do have some experience with sculpting and baking normal maps, but not much. Until now I only sculpted small details on my models. I want to push it further with this model though, lets see where it takes me.
lucky superb 'look and feel'!
not sure what will you have left to do in week two though...
Thanks, I think I'll be doing a lot of sculpting. A bit out of my comfort zone, but I'll try and learn.
Finally something to show 😊 Here's a WIP from my sculpt adventure. Still a lot to do. Tell me what you think, don't hold back 😉
There is some repetition going on in the paddles, I'll have to rotate/mirror them and probably sculpt some more. Time to get some 💤
Looks friggin awesome! :D
Thanks! How's your sculpt progressing?
Some more sculpted wood, still a lot of pieces to go. Room for improvement but I want first to have everything sculpted and then I'll come back to every piece, if I have the time 😅
lucky Looking great! 😍
I'm in the same boat. Just trying to get things sculpted to a state that I can go and fix everything up later.
I figure next week will be waaay less intense and offer lots of time to tweak things. I'm planning on changing some of how mine is held together (brackets, bolts, etc)
Homework Submission - Week 2 - Water Wheel
Here are my sculpted models, didn't get to the metal parts, I'll do them tomorrow. No to happy with the large arc piece, I'll probably redo that one. File has become quite large (1,3 Gb), don't know if I should upload it to Google Drive, maybe wait until after the bake.
Update, sculpted some metal parts.
Another update, sculpted some more stones.
lucky I ran into the problem of my file ballooning as well. I noticed that some of my duplicates had multires on them still, so it was duplicating the sculpt data. Not sure if that's your situation. I know my file size is still around 600mb, but it was at over a gig. 😅
lexicolopolis Unfortunately it's not the case with my model. I have a really dense mesh, probably too dense for baking on a 1024 px texture. I wonder how many detials will show up in the bake. It all depends on the texel density of your UV's. I'll probably use multiple texture sets for the wood.
lucky I've been baking onto 2048px with acceptable quality. 1024 certainly won't cut it with all these pieces unless they're spread over multiple. Granted, my UVs are extremely unoptimized right now, just wanted to get an idea of the sculpt to normal map effect as I went.
When my file went over 1.5gig Blender started stuttering frequently. : / Hope you get your sculpts in without it wiggin out.
lexicolopolis Keeping my fingers crossed but I can still sculpt smoothly. Kent talked about keeping the texture map at 1024, let's see what he will say tomorrow during the stream.
TOP-SHELF SCULPTING lucky! You're flowing through this asset beautifully. I applaud the quality of sculpture and modularization of pieces. Just awesome. Keep doing what you're doing!
Kent talked about keeping the texture map at 1024
Indeed this is what I said on stream but have since changed my mind. Check out the 3rd announcement in the HQ thread if you haven't already for the updated texture expectations.
Okay, I think I'm done sculpting. My last couple of stones. Onto baking.....
Wow I really like this stones. hopefully I have time to try it out too , at least one stone. Very great work.
Thanks! If you need some help or tips just let me know.
lucky Those stones are looking pretty sexy!
amazing stufff!: )
Homework Submission - Week 3 - Water Wheel
Baking of the normal and cavity map is almost done. Some issues have to be resolved. Still a lot to do this week. The goal is to have the texturing done on Tuesday before the live stream.
Update, first WIP with texturing. Not done but it's a base to work from. Coming days I want to work on it. Especially more variation in the wood color and roughness. Also moving and rotating some elements to prevent repetition. I also want to add some moss color to the wood and stone which are near the water.
Lowpoly model with normal map
Normal baking done! 8914 Triangles
It is impressive!
Definitely maximising space with your UV map. Well done.
lucky You hit an absolute home run with this water wheel. I mean...it's stunning. No more to say. You're done!
If you wanted to contribute to the interior after April, I'm sure it would be appreciated 🙂
theluthier Thanks Kent! I still want to work on it some more. When it's done I'll let you know and you can decide if you want to update the master file or not.
Thanks again, it was a great experience and it's not over yet :).
dostovel I plan to contribute to the interior as much as I can. Will be a blast :)
Cool Lucky, I'm glad you're willing to help out with going the extra mile with the crazy interior revolution experiment.
NICE! All that glorious detail on a 2k, I knew you could do it! Great job.
Thanks, I updated it with some textures. Have a look and tell me what you think. Any tips? Still some work to do on variation of the wood color and roughness. Also it's too clean. I want to add some moss to add some color.
I made some beauty shots of my wheel.
splat21 If you've got the time, please update your blog with these shots. Thanks!
lexicolopolis As promised an update :)
theluthier I changed some of the colors of the textures and added some randomness by rotating some elements. Should I update my WIP file? Or do you want to keep my first version for the final scene?
You nailed this piece, absolutely stunning artwork
You crushed it Carlo! Great job!
lucky - Carlo, fantastic money shots! When you go to the blog, let me know if you would prefer if I use a different image.
