So, I decided that this place is better for posting WIPs than gallery :)
I tried to start a sculpt January today (a bit late, but rules allows catching up) and what I come to, that it's a complete waste of time. Concepting your works demands much more time that sculpting it and only slows down progress. I'll focus on what I've done before.
So, I'm planning to do a retopo this week and I noticed, that current Weekly CG Challenge is about character modeling. Don't know if I should try to carry two characters in parallel, but that's definitely a good occasion to fill up my portfolio. I think I'll try.
2 hours well spended. I hope to do this in a hour or less in future. Had urge to use ZRemesher, but I resisted :D.
nekronavt wow really great work. I have no idea what z remesher is but this looks amazing
yyukinoh1989 thanks! ZRemesher is a tool in ZBrush, which can automaticly generate pretty nice topology at least for posing and subdivision sculpting. Manual retopology still has more control and quality (depends of artist of course :)) tho.
nekronavt Topology seems nice as far as I can tell. Good thing you resisted the urge of using zremesh even though manual retopology feels like manual labor at times :D
drgnclw actually, I'm one of those deviants, who find retopology satisfying :D
Body retopo - done
Almost done with skull-mask retopo.
nekronavt beautifull retopo. You're seems to be used to retopo or am I wrong. They both look so great. I look forward to the rest of it. (will the clothes also be retopo?)
yyukinoh1989 thanks! Yes, every sculpted piece will be retopologized. It's required for good shading, ability to use multiresolution sculpting for microdetails and UV-unwrapping.
nekronavt looking good :) this is your best piece you've done so far, and it's not even finished!
ssmurfmier1985 thank you! In my opinion, my best work is a pistol from the first page, but it's complete and textured :) In terms of retopology this skull is the most complex for sure :)
nekronavt yeah that pistol is really good too, still love that one :)
Current retopo state:
Owl Skull Mask: Done
Rat Skull Necklase: Next
nekronavt can only say one thing about this . awesome . trully this already looks great . look forward to the retopo of that rat skull necklace :D this work will be amazing once its completed that is for sure
yyukinoh1989 thank you! I hope so :)
nekronavt from what i have seen from you i trully believe it will be a great masterpiece . you already can be so proud of this . and i am sure once its fully done the result will be stunning .
yyukinoh1989 thanks again!
Here goes the rat fella
nekronavt really amazing. You sure know how to work with retopo.
Started my #weeklyCGC entry in parallel.
nekronavt Please tell me you've been practicing retopo for years or something, these look amazing. I guess someone more experienced than I could label them too dense with polygons but from where I'm standing they look good to me. Hardly an expert on anatomy either, but that bust is looking sick too. The nasolabial fold (totally didn't have to Google that) could possibly be seen as cutting too deep into the cheeks but I know with Blender you sometimes gotta cut extra deep to get the proper result you want. But again, definitely take all criticism I have with a grain of salt. Keep going!
thecabbagedetective thanks :D
Please tell me you've been practicing retopo for years or something
Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm practicing the whole 3d stuff for a year or something. :D
I could label them too dense with polygons
Yep, they definitely are at some places, but since shading is acceptable I think it's okay. If I'll do a realtime character with it, I definitely will use a more different approach to mesh density.
. The nasolabial fold (totally didn't have to Google that) could possibly be seen as cutting too deep into the cheeks
I think it's the camera angle making it looks deeper than it actually is. Though it's a WIP and some places can be drastically changed.
Thank for the notices overall :)
I'm freezing my realistic character modeling exercise until I done with this knight guy because it has a deadline on 21'st, and exercise has not :D
So, here is some posing. Don't mind muscle bending artifacts and stuff like that. He'll be completely covered in armor except for the head - the body is needed only to place armor in correct way. And the head will be retopologized and detailed with multires.
(Damn, deltoid and brachialis are messed up, hope nobody notice)
nekronavt Strong pose! I like it 😊
ssmurfmier1985 thank you! 😎
nekronavt one thing is for sure we gonna get to see another great work of you. This already looks amazing. I look forward to see this finished
nekronavt Damn, I was thinking about modeling a knight in february (with a high gothic harness) but it looks like you'll beat me to it :D Good luck with the whole thing. Looking forward to it.
yyukinoh1989 drgnclw thank you!
Started doing armor today. This "mass" under the plate armor will be chainmail later.
nekronavt really nice work so far starting to get nice shapes :)
Sadly, I had to admit, that I'm overestimated my power (fatigue has the high ground here, obviously...) and I can't manage all that I wanted with this project by deadline. And making a character without a concept art is a big pain in ass, to be honest.
So, I think I will have a day off to restore my nerves and I will return to my previous character. It is better to make one in good quality than two in bad and burn out along the way.
nekronavt Good choice Pavel, enjoy your rest!
nekronavt that is true for sure. Take some good rest and I look forward to you're previous character progress.
Thank you :)
But, somebody, stop me. I can't take a rest, and I'm up to something xD
nekronavt omg is this gonna become push in boots. I love that kitty :D.
But be sure to take rest if you need it. I know how hard it is to sometimes take a break but I learned the hard way that I should lissened sooner to my body.
Aside from that again such great job already I love animals so you're showing me lots of nice stuffs :)
nekronavt cute kitty 😄 Curious to see where this is going!
is this gonna become push in boots
Close enough :) And thanks!
ssmurfmier1985 thanks! I'll try to finish it by tomorrow.
nekronavt The cat looks very cute! The armor of the knight looks also very good. The pauldrons are a bit spiky and I can't stop imagining how they would scratch his helmet whenever he tried to raise his arms :D While it looks cool, it also kind of looks unpractical. However, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to say you have to make your every design perfectly practical looking.
By the way, is there a specific reason you're sculpting your armors instead of mesh modeling them?
he pauldrons are a bit spiky and I can't stop imagining how they would scratch his helmet
Sounds reasonable :D
By the way, is there a specific reason you're sculpting your armors instead of mesh modeling them?
The main reason is that I can tweak shape the way I want without minding topology. It's easier for me to do at least a rough but close to finished shape and do a retopo later.
nekronavt cutest knight ever! Love this kitty :)
ssmurfmier1985 thanks ^_^
Retopo - done
Tomorrow (today, lol) will be an intense day 😅
The second character for my #weeklyCGC scene. Don't mind the materials, they are for visual marking only. Gonna add few little details and paint this couple in a Substance Painter now. Deadline is tomorrow 20:00 (in UTC+3), so I'm okay with timing, I think.
nekronavt really great work I love it. Both of them looks great.
yyukinoh1989 thank you. And they are painted now! I used my cats as a reference :D
Meet Sir Fibonacci
Meet Lady Blueberry
nekronavt really great work they both looks really amazing and damn adorable :D youre cats are really cute too . wish i could pet them xD but i guess i cant trough a monitor :p
I finished it! (sketchfab)
nekronavt really amazing work. You got a wonderfull result. I love the pose you chose.
nekronavt I love how you got inspired by your cute cats! Really like how it turned out, the knight bowing for the princess. Great work in such a short amount of time, you're getting faster and better! Good job 😊👍🏻
yyukinoh1989 thank you :)
ssmurfmier1985 thanks :)
you're getting faster and better!
Well, this scene is a bit easier than what I commonly attempting to make, and it can be optimized a lot, but deadline is deadline. :)
nekronavt Congrats on finishing! Looks real nice. Your cats are cute too :D
drgnclw thanks! :) Sadly, it doesn't won anything, but I'm happy, that this challenge forced me to do it. :)
nekronavt winning is always something nice but the most important thing is that you had fun when making them. They both looked fabulous and amazing.
yyukinoh1989 absolutely agree. This contest was just a reason to make this scene. I'm not upset at all and fully motivated to finish "Realistic Character" course at last :D
I'm stuck with characters dreadlocks. It's like 60 separate curves and each one should be placed manually to look good. Don't know how to do this and not kill myself in the process...
nekronavt Wow, that's a lot... 😨 Maybe to keep yourself sain you could do a row or two a day, and then some gestural sculpting or something to do something fun to get your mind of it? Takes a bit longer but the variety may help 😊
ssmurfmier1985 that's a good idea I think :) thanks.
I'm joining NVIDIA Metropia 2042: Characters of the Future challenge. Seems to be a very serious one, so I not really hope to take a prize place, but the effort should push my skills way forward.
I won't post any WIPs here, so you can follow me at my submission page if you are interested.
I will first complete my current Necromancer character and will gather references and compile an idea for the challenge at the same time.
PS. To hell this curves and hair simulation. I'll just sculpt and retopo hair, it much less pain in ass.
nekronavt sounds like a cool contest! Good luck 😄👍🏻
ssmurfmier1985 thanks! I already posted some concept stuff there. I'll be posting at least once a week (rules demands it).
nekronavt wow man ! i'm enjoying ur thread a big deal ! u r improving a lot ! i see that ur going for character , and u r starting to nail it , better anatomy knowledge , retopo is very good ! u r putting a lot of effort ! keep the good job !
mmalhomsi thank you very much!
I will finish necromancer character, I promise xD
But if anyone want to see some WIPs from me at this time period, welcome here
nekronavt so good so far !
So... The idea of participating in this contest was that I'll learn much with the competition of this scale, but now it just feels like the only thing I'm thinking of is concepting and deadline, instead of developing sculpting and modeling skills. That's why I left aboard Sculpt January - here is the same situation. I don't want to concept, I want to sculpt and model. That's why I'm withdrawing from this contest. I'll proceed with previous character now.
nekronavt Totally understand, concepting is a pain!! At least that's what I'm experiencing with my character, making everything up yourself really halts the progress...
So good for you recognizing that's not what you want and doing your own thing! Looking forward to seeing your necromancer woman evolve 😊That one has so much potential and is coming along pretty good so far 😄👍🏻
nekronavt r u doing Ok .? i have the feeling that u r somehow depressed , .? concepting is cool , and ur model/concept was good.
mmalhomsi sometimes I'm getting a bit depressed because I badly want to work in CG, but have to work with web-dev at the moment, to feed family and stuff. But that's doesn't matter, since I have a loving wife and cgc community supporting me :)
I decided, that it will be better to finish one character with maximum possible quality for me, rather than starting new.
ssmurfmier1985 thanks :) Gonna roll up my sleeves and finish retopology this week. I want it to be ready for critique live stream.
nekronavt i can understand u . hopefully u wiil have a CG job soon !
mmalhomsi thanks! I hope so!
nekronavt best of luck Pavel, I believe in you :)
theluthier on yesterday stream you've shown, that AO node is partially working in EEVEE, but it seems like it's not for me. Fresh build. Is anyone experienced this?
UPD: I found out why it wasn't. You need AO enablend in EEVEE settings for it to work. And, sadly, it's working in screen space, but that's better than nothing.
nekronavt Oooooh this makes sense. Recently I tried the AO node with Eevee and it wasn't working - I assumed the functionality wasn't included yet. But now I'm sure I just didn't have the AO setting enabled in Eevee's render settings. #LearnedSomething
theluthier nekronavt and so the student becomes the teacher 😊
ssmurfmier1985 nekronavt My job is complete!
theluthier seems like I'm teaching you EEVEE since shading and lighting class. I'm glad about this symbiosis :D
I think I can call it retopologized at this moment
nekronavt a clean retopo ! good work ,i love the concept , and ur sculpt is doing it justice
mmalhomsi thank you!
So, now I can rest for a while :D
nekronavt Whoohoo!! 😄🎉
Some ZBrush basic proportions and shapes sculpt here. Damn, this tools are great, though navigation is a bit strange.
nekronavt u seem to be already comfortable with ZB , what r the pros and cons so far .?
mmalhomsi yeah, get used a bit
This is what I've discovered yet. I found no real cons. Navigation was a bit weird sometimes, but I think I just accidentally disabled some option and was able to navigate only around object pivot :D. But now it seems like it focusing on the place I'm sculpting on, so everything is ok. Interface may appear a bit alien for the first time, but it's designed to be used with graphics tablet and is customizable. Price may be the only "cons".
nekronavt thank u , you take the time to share ur opinion so far ,and i apreciate it ! it is important to handle more poligons , and i love the sculpt layers , i was affraid of using it till now caus i was a mouse sculpture !
i ll take time to try it ,thank u my friend ! character artists RULE !
mmalhomsi damn, you were sculpting all your previous stuff with a mouse? Hats off 👍
So, me and my cousin are started making a game a week ago. He's mostly doing coding stuff and I'm visual, so I found that I need to learn how to properly animate characters. Yeah, I'm starting the animation in blender flow, and it's already a whole new world. So damn interesting.
I don't want to create a "unity book" yet (especially since the game is being created with UE4 😅), but I think I'll share some screenshots/gifs along the development right here in my polybook.
Just a bit of pre-pre-alpha gameplay 😂
nekronavt poor guy with the headache 😂
I think it's awesome you're also building a game! Looking forward to your updates 😄
My polybook turned to a bit of quite place recent, but I promise to put some updates this week :)
nekronavt Nice! 😄👏🏻
