So, I decided that this place is better for posting WIPs than gallery :)
I wanted a B.C. Rich in my early teen years. Seeing your model reminded me of those years :). The rapier in the first page is real nice too. I wish I could see the topology of the rapier even though I have some idea how it is.
drgnclw this rapier was remade a bit, so topology from that screenshot is lost. But here is what I got at final.

Another daily WIP. Not much time this week. Like 1-3 hours per day. I hope I'll finish it tomorrow. Some proportions tweaking and details are left.
nekronavt I'm loving the skull! This is progressing real nice 😄 Spending a bit of time every day, even if it is 10 mins, is better than long periods of doing nothing and then doing a crazy amount of hours on one day 'to catch up', which never works. So you're doing great, keep it up 😃😎

That's, probably, the last WIP for this project. I'm planning to bust samples and render it in full size, but if anyone has some critique - you are welcome :)
nekronavt All the individual elements look great! And that flame... composition wise it's a bit busy, there isn't really one focus point. Try rearranging the elements, changing the camera angle or even removing some elements. Or maybe depth of field could be of help here. That flame though... wow.
ssmurfmier1985 Thank you for your feedback. I believe mess is a part of vanitas genre, and this scene is not even close to the mess I saw on some paintings :D.

So I'm not really sure that the lack of one focus point is the issue specifically in this case. But maybe I'm missing some point.
nekronavt the camera angle on this one is much lower, and the mess is more concentrated without gaps, which gives a more appealing picture I think. It could also be personal preference though, dunno what others think :) in the end go with your gut. It's your art piece after all! I'm just conveying my point of view, doesn't mean you have to do anything with it ;) in any case the modeling is very high quality and you should be very proud of what you made! ^^

Related to composition,do try to see the elements avoiding its meaning;do only focus in its essence of colour, shapes and contrast. It's like it was an 'abstract image' although it not to be at all.

I gathered some valuable feedback in russian community too. I'll, probably, take 1-2 days of rest from this project to wash my eyes. So, it's definitely wasn't the last WIP :D

I think this is mostly the final lighting setup. There is some work with materials left and I still think if I should add a few objects to the scene. Something like dying flowers... Any thoughts?
P.S. and trying to find a variant for signature :D

nekronavt I would love to play Kingdom Come once more but I'm waiting for all the DLC to come out. Have fun playing that beautiful game!
Contrasting blue light is great but it feels too strong and takes away from the slight eerines of the scene (it's understandable if you're not going for that)
nekronavt I'm liking the flame, nice and bright! Dried roses seems fitting as flowers. Maybe some wrinkled satin fabric on the table? Sort of a luxurious table cloth.
Signature wise, I'm thinking something that looks handwritten with flourish curls would work great with the style of things you make! but that's my personal preference 😉

So, I tried this NVIDIA's AI denoiser and it's something. On low samples, it's, of course, blurs everything, but at least there are no this dirty artifacts, that blender's denoiser has. On higher samples, it should be absolutely amazing.

So, as someone already noticed, I called this project final.
A said, that I'll do a little material breakdown, so soon there will be a few posts about flame, soap bubbles and skull. Other materials a pretty simple, but if anyone is interested, I'll break down them too.
Candle Flame material
Node Tree (clickable):
Basic Opacity Gradient. Just a simple fade in and out.
Candle Cord Zone. A bit hacky, may need some rotation tweaking for specifical camera angle.
Fresnel opacity mask. Makes edges not so sharp.
Multiplying all of it gives as a Final Flame Opacity Mask which is going right into the shader mix factor input.
Verical 0-1 flame gradient. Just a simple gradient for later use in color and intensity distribution.
Flame Intensity Gradient. I'm multiplying it later with my maximum intensity value.
Substracting multiplication of Candle Cord Zone and Fresnel Opacity Mask from Flame Color Base Gradient Gives as this
And after coloring this with Color Ramp we are getting Final Flame Color
Putting color and intensity into Emission shader and mixing it with transparent. But backfacing spoiling everything...
So we are getting rid of it
Ta-dam. That's all.

And I have a peculiarity to constantly think that I am not doing something in the best way. So I prefer to think about it not like as a tutorial, but more like "my way of doing this stuff". Conscience won't let me officially teach anyone 😅

It's breakdown time!
Soap Bubble material
Node Network (clickable):
Distorted Magic Texture. Spend quite a time tweaking parameters of Magic Texture. Maybe there is an easier way to get this pattern. Mix node controls the amount of coordinate distortion here.
Facing based Color. It's probably can be precisely calculated with physics and math, but looks legit to me :D
Mixing this colors
Saturation amount looks something like this - a bit less saturated on center.
Brighten it up
Mixing it with transparency (using glossy shader) and removing shadow rays for paranoia reasons mostly.
And here is my version of the bubble.
PS. The bubble itself is just a sphere with a very thin solidify modifier.

Well, that's the scheme...
The main color scheme is just an ambient occlusion in colorramp, overlayed with pointiness (don't mind the teeth, they are a bit simplified bone material)
Grime is a distorted noisy texture...
... multiplied with another ramped pointiness value
Final color is a result of mixing basic color scheme with brown color, using grime as factor
Grime goes to final roughness by mixing it with 0.25 gray value
A bunch of mixed noises is.. well. A bunch of mixed noises. It forms this picture, which is used in Macro Details
High scale noise is simple. It goes to specular variety and used for microdetails together with grime.
All this details stuff goes into the bump node
And here is final output of Principled BSDF
If anyone is interested, I can provide a blend file of this scene. But I don't want to put a link for all to see, so I'll personally send a link to any fellow CGCookie comrade, who want to take a look.

So, starting to sculpt some human body for the last course of Modeling with Blender flow :) That's probably can be a long time because I want to study anatomy along with it, not just "need to finish fastaaa!"
And I'm returning to 2.79 for the main part of a workflow. Latest builds of 2.8 are just crashing my OpenGL.
nekronavt whoohoo a human sculpt! Smart to go back to 2.79 in this case, I actually do that too for all the course exercises (not for personal projects though!)

(the word is wrong written i guess ?) and 2.8 when youre working on more personal stuff ?
yyukinoh1989 to be honest, it's better to use 2.79 with every serious project right now in my opinion. 2.8 beta is less stable than alpha 2 was on my machine :(

yyukinoh1989 not better or worse. Rather easier, because the files are 2.7x and they will always work perfectly in the very stable 2.79, while 2.8 still has bugs and not every 2.7x file will work perfect straight out of the box. So it's more a convenience thing, one less thing to worry about.

yyukinoh1989 I think you checked the wrong tab, there are only 3 options in the right privacy center tab (it's the first tab you see when you click 'privacy center'):
The middle one needs to be turned on, "Message Permissions".

Almost finished first part of realistic character modeling course. Palms, feet, ears and final polishing are left and next week I'll do character blocking. I have a nice concept from ArtStation I'm planning to use for this character. Suzanne on guard of SFW content here.
And a bit of personal news. There is a high chance, that in January I'll start attending a course about character modeling in my local learning center here in Minsk. I'm highly aimed to get into the industry as a character artist, so I'll learn ZBrush and Max/Maya. But that no means that I'm abandoning Blender. Not at all! And of course, that will not affect my presence here :)

nekronavt Damn that's some high quality sculpting there, you been doing that for long? The only body sculpt I remember from you was the demon, so if this was a second attempt of sorts you knocked it out the park.

thecabbagedetective well, that demon wasn't the first humanlike and I wasn't tried to be accurate with anatomy on it.
I tried to sculpt anatomy even before I found CGCookie and started blender and modeling seriously. Most of the tries just went to recycle bin.
All this human sculpting stuff relies more on anatomy knowledge than on digital sculpting skills, so I'm staring at the anatomy book at least half an hour a day and constantly repeating.
A bit of history:
First ever try. Did it in ZBrush in March of 2017 but then I gave up this idea for almost a year. I never learned anatomy before and just relied on references.
This was next attempt in January of 2018. Started to learn anatomy, so this guy is not as creepy as previous. And it's Blender now.
I even retopologized him (with a horrible wireframe of course) and had some fun with rigging and posing.
And this one was the last attempt before I found CGCookie in April of 2018. You can find this zombie guy in my CGCookie gallery but without a coat and cape.
And then there was a demon, a girl with a horned mask (also in my gallery).
And here we are.

Had some cloth blocking yesterday, not final tho. And don't mind the materials. Just some color variation.
theluthier I have a question about this ripped loincloth in terms of Modeling Realistic Characters with Blender course. I'm planning to do this with a combination of real geometry and cloth cards (like hair cards, but cloth) for a retopo and details stage, I think this is the best solution for this kind of thing. But for blocking stage is it okay to leave it as a rough dyntopo sculpt? Maybe some tips about how to block out stuff like that?

thecabbagedetective I won't use this shader, I'm planning to do a texture in Substance Painter this time :)
nekronavt For blocking it's really an "anything goes" kind of thing. A rough dyntopo sculpt is perfectly fine as a block-in because it approximates the rip and wrinkles, which is good for perception (even at the block-in stage). I like this approach because once I'm ready to convert to real geo, the rough sculpt could be good enough to bake a normal map and save time. Or just need a little extra polish and then it's ready.
All that to say, as far as I can tell you're approaching the block-in how I would as well. Cool concept too, btw 👍

I'm a bit slow now since learning ZBrush in parallel, here is a WIP to keep my polybook alive. Hair and bands are more like experimenting than blocking for now. Just trying to figure out the best methods and so on. Hope to finish blocking by the end of 2018.

nekronavt This is coming along nicely! Can't wait to see when you get to material creation :) Sad that you bailed on Sculpt January, but I understand. The calendar topics they choose leave a lot of interpretation for the artist, which is both a strength and a weakness for the event, and if you are really trying to maximize your 3D time, the concept phase can be a drain. Good luck in your pursuits this month! I look forward to the posts.
