Denoiser under Cycles

What is the difference between the different denoiser options ?

The denoisisng check box in Layer panel

Denoising data in the Layer panel -> Passes -> Data

And de denoiser node in the composition

Is one more taxing on GPU or they just apply on a different stage of the rendering.

Because to me they all do the same thing.

Thanks for the input guys.

Because to me they all do the same thing.

There are two Denoisers and they both reduce the noise, but in a different way. It's like saying that Cycles and Eevee do the same thing, Yes, they both render out an image, but in a completely different way.

Watch the above-mentioned video (JL explains it way better than I can and I think he covers everything you want to know) and come back if you then still have questions.

  • Thank you for the info.

  • I've watch JL video on the denoising options and i've watch Andrew Price video. They both talk about the denoising process in the composition stage.

I think, i figure out the denoising check box at the end of the Layer Properties and correct me if i'm wrong.

The denoising check box, denoise every sample as it's rendering, but you don't the have the option to apply the denoising normal and albedo, it's there that's it.

Compare to the denoiser node in the composition, which denoise only at the end of the rendering, but leaves you all the options open.

    • Well Mike, the Denoising checkbox in the Layer Properties is the 'old' Denoiser that looks at the color of pixels around the pixel that needs to be evaluated and averages the color.

The 'new' Denoiser uses Artificial Intelligence to calculate the color of a pixel.

This is an extreme simplification and I might be completely wrong,

But it's not just a difference of options you get in the Compositor.

    • aw! thank you, this make sense.

      much appreciated

      thanks for your time spikey
