Edit: NVM I think I somehow missed the bevel process somewhere. beveling it out seemed to work a bit better
Yes you need to bevel as a means to reinforce the hard edges. The technique is also referred to as "holding edges". Otherwise the subsurf modifier will smooth it out too much.
