Collab 2020: Modeling Heavy Equipment (Backhoe)

Accomplishing a BIG project TOGETHER

Starting in March 2020, I began a large stream project to model a comprehensive, highly-detailed Caterpillar 434E backhoe. Please watch the first stream (first 3 minutes of abridged version at least) for an overview.

It's a straight-forward project of building a complex model over an extended period of time. The spin on the project is that I want your help to accomplish it! If I build some parts and you build some parts, we will finish this thing much quicker. Plus the contribution format will include reviews, the potential of having your piece(s) assimilated into the final model. Not to mention large quantities of XP are at stake 🤑

NOTE: This is an involved project reserved for Citizen members.

Collaboration Details

The general idea is that I kickoff stages of the project via live stream, which is typically once per month. For the time in between streams, you choose a piece of the backhoe and apply what you learned from the stream to that piece. For example, the first stream covered initial block out. So between stream 1 and stream 2, your job is to pick a piece and block it out.

This is the repeating protocol for each Assignment Period (between-streams):

  1. Signing up for pieces of the model. I will be maintaining a Google Sheet to organize piece selection and grading. Following this URL will give you the ability to comment. The sheet is sectioned vertically and color-coordinated with a backhoe image. To sign up for a piece, right click on an empty cell below your desired piece section and click "Comment" (CTRL + ALT + M). Comment your name or username and I will fill it in officially as confirmation.

    Remember that it is OK for multiple people to model the same piece. But lets try to have at least one person assigned to each piece before doubling up.

    2. Project file structure. We're going to use Google Drive as a means to sync a single working directory among all contributors. See this thread about details and how to get set up.

    3. Submitting your piece for review. Exactly one week before the next stream is scheduled to be broadcast, your piece is due. In the "Attempt" cell of the spreadsheet, paste a download link to your .blend file via Dropbox, Google Drive, or equivalent hosting service. This will earn you at least 10 XP each week.

    4. Review. On stream I will review each submitted piece and decide which will be assimilated into the master model (in the case of multiple submissions of the same piece). The purpose of the review is to generate feedback for you work and advice for improvement.

    5. Assimilation. If your piece makes the cut and is assimilated into the master model, your name / username will be added to the object in Blender. You will go down in history as a definitive contributor to this epic backhoe model!

    Once the model is completely done, I plan to render a short demo reel showing off the model and crediting all contributors. It should be a rewarding conclusion to all the work we will do!

  • Here's my last version for the wheels blockout level 2:

    It took me a lot more time than originally thought. I've done the modeling of the inner part of the wheel hub manually by eyeballing. Maybe  it would be more precise using a plane orientated in the same way as the object in the reference image of the planetary gear  and then tracing the outline on the surface while in perspective view. I'm still looking for reference images showing the connection between the wheel hub and the axle. Are the front axle and the back axle identical?

      I just used the pictures that were in the file. I know that all wheels are able to rotate from the description and by the looks of it the front and back are the same, just mirrored....

      In cases like this, you just have to think about how this would be able to work, look at a lot of reference pictures and don't trust those drawings too much!

      Your profile of the treads however looks like it is put on top of the tire and the tire is made out of one piece of rubber...

    • Yes, I was wondering how this vehicle is driven, but for the heavy work it has to fullfill, I supposed that it uses a four-wheel-drive. My tyre treads have to be reshaped since their outlines are just a very rough approximation. I made them by extruding an edge with snapping "individual elements" on the tyre surface and adding a solidify modifier. The "rubber" look comes from the subsurf modifier. I need to sharpen the tread outlines more after the blocking stage.

    • Yes, I can access your file and have also done it with your first wheel version where I especially admired your already complex blocking of the axles. Your approach of dividing the tyre into repeating segments is a clever idea. I also wanted to find a solution that offers the possibility to manipulate the tread pattern easily. The main focus for the treads now is to match the correct shape better. Later, I'll tackle the transition between the treads and the rest of tyre with a concave beveling so that the treads look like organically "growing" out of the tyre instead of just lying on its surface. There's also a clearly visible bigger bevel towards the tyre sides. By the way: I've already seen 3 different tyre versions by Michelin, Goodyear and Musclerok. I'm  not sure whether Caterpillar offers all 3 of them to the clients or delivers the backhoe just with one standard type.

    • I started with an Array Modifier with an Object Offset, but in the second version went for a Simple Deform Modifier, set to Bend, because that has a lot of advantages,  although a bit trickier to set up. ( Try both methods and you'll be able to see the differences.)

      I think it is important to realize that a tire is one piece and not something welded together, but you know that already.

      I've seen a 'live Cat' that had Michelin tires, but I'm sure that that's not obligatory.

      To be quite honest, the (almost) greatest problem  for me in a project like this is the naming of all the parts;)

    • I separated of the treads from the rest of tyre only in order to keep as much control as possible  over the manipulation of the tread shape without touching the tyre's main body. Of course, this doesn't reflect the reality of a real live tyre which is produced directly as one piece. As soon as I'm satisfied with the tread's shape. I can join it with the rest of the tyre.

      For the tyre version: Maybe the official brochures can give a hint which brands are used for newly produced Caterpillars. Maybe they differ from region to region?

      For the part naming: I'm sure at the end of the project we're backhoe experts and open our own factory ;) . But seriously: It makes fun to find out how thinks work which then helps to create a convincing model that looks like a fully functional backhoe.

  • This makes things a lot easier if you dont need special settings for the back tyres. I'm just wondering why they publish drawings that don't reflect the reality and cause even a little bit more work instead of just copying the front wheel.

  • I've finally blocked out the axles, too. It's still one single object, so that the different parts have to be separated as objects and named accordingly later. I have blocked out the front axle according to the back axle visible on one of the images of Kent's reference sheet and then mirrored it, but the front axle is simpler and seems to be thinner. This has to be fixed. The blocking was done just by eyeballing. The hub of the wheel served as the only orientation for the diameter of the axle.

  • theluthier  Sorry for posting this here Kent, but I couldn't find an official thread of the Shark Course, plus Backhoes and sharks feel like they have a common relative distant ancestor and since this thread is really active... Well this will be quick.

    I decided to face some of my fears and kryptonite: Sculpting and doing characters. I have mainly ever focused on poly modeling and hard surface stuff, I really like it, but I get this sense of nervousness every time I see someone post of a freelance job or portfolio work with characters, of course because I can't do them, this always haunts me and I am tired of it

    Last time this happened to me was on Wednesday stream with Wayne, he showed a cute kids animation render of a freelance work and I got anxious imagining what if it was me that was asked to do that job, it had models of animal characters. And on top of that I posted my portfolio on BlenderNation and it got published, and I was like alright cool... little did I know people were going to start writing to my email asking stuff, I freaked the bad-word out, and I was like what is happening? Then I thought well of course you dummy, you put your email at the start of the demo reel.

    So, I started to watch the Shark Course and the things that I wanted to ask was, how in the world do you make it seem so buttery smooth? sculpting I mean, doesn't your hand hurt? Am I holding the pencil on the tablet wrong? Do you use "Emulate 3 Button Mouse" so you can move on the 3D view with ALT on the keyboard? Or do you use the click'ity thing button on the side of the pencil as the middle mouse and hoover your pencil above the tablet and let the pencil guide the 3D viewport?

    I don't know if you remember Bob Actually, the gorilla sculpt I did, but now I think the shark is going better.

    This is only one hour of work. I give myself a limit so as to I don't waste hours an hours. Right now my strategy is, I have to finish the sculpt before a 3 hour Joe Rogan Podcast is over.

      I'd like to see the treads of the wheels be more accurate to the photos. Also there's details that could be blocked out on the rim of the wheel. Look higher on this page for other work-in-progress wheels to see what I mean.

    • sshanr You can either create tyre segments as spikeyxxx did (see his first picture on this page) and duplicate them with the help of an Array Modifier and a rotated empty as object offset or you can, as I did it, trace the  outline of one tread piece on the tyre surface by extruding an edge while in "Face Select" mode and snapping of "individual elements" turned on (your viewing direction determines the projection direction). Then add a solidify modifier for the tread thickness und a subsurf modifier for smoothing the tread outline (additional edge loops will reduced the "rubber look" of the treads in my pictures above). I duplicated the tread piece with an Array Modifier and a rotated empty. The tread pieces on the inner side of the tyre a just mirrored copies of the tread pieces on the outer side of the tyre.   • BTW sorry for the off topic comment, but I was having problems with 2.82 on my machine, my graphics card kept crashing. I may have solved the problem by shutting down my browser whenever I use Blender. I think there's a conflict accessing a core or something and the browser wins and shuts down Blender. 

    Just a random thought might help someone in the future.

  • Sorry - I know I'm very late!  But I did get the first blocking stage of the "hinge arm" done.

    Firstly, I found out by looking at a maintenance manual I found for the 434E (no kidding, ha) that the proper name for this component is the "swing frame", and so looking up those terms I was able to find several more nice and clear images of the parts, including a side plan view which was like finding gold!

    I found out that the large pink component in the screenshots was a lot slimmer X-wise than the original photographs suggested.  That plus the bizarre shape meant that I had to give up Kent's initial blocks for this part and start over from scratch (I hope that's okay!).  I know the part looks quite rough with the harsh hexagonal boltholes; but even though I think I remember we were told no subsurf for this stage, I still anticipate it coming later - especially for that weirdly shaped part.  

    But, here's the finished blocks for all the major components.  There's a whole mess of hydraulic lines and hoses that runs through these pieces but given their nature I decided to do them on later more-detailed passes.

    • The longer I think about it, the more I think I'm going to redo that weirdly-shaped part (Part "B", the pink one in the above post) yet another time.  I'm not quite happy with the topology and I think I can do better.  I'm going to wait until after the stream, though.

      By the way - while I found out that piece is definitely less wide than the original block, I still did have to guesstimate the width in the end as I wasn't able to find a front or top plan for it.  theluthier I know you at least have a reference drawing for the digger arm that gives your piece a much more exact or correct size.  So next week after you've finished your stage-two work on the digger arm, if possible I'd like to get a copy of it so that I can adjust the width of the hinge knuckle to fit precisely.

      Brilliant work on the *swing arm*! Thanks for digging deep on this part. I've updated its name on the spreadsheet. No problem at all starting over from scratch - I'm happy you did. It doesn't surprise me that mine was poorly approximated 😅

      So next week after you've finished your stage-two work on the digger arm, if possible I'd like to get a copy of it so that I can adjust the width of the hinge knuckle to fit precisely.

  • theluthier and crew. Living proof that I work at Caterpillar haha. It's the small text at the bottom of my security badge: "A Caterpillar Company"

    Our company got bought by CAT a long while back. I don't work at a Loader/Backhoe production plant but I do work at a Turbine Production Facility. I work for Solar Turbines but technically it is Caterpillar. The big Brother mandates everything we do and has the deep pockets we need to support our production needs. The turbines we make tend to sell in the $100k to multiple million price range. All of my swag has the CAT name on it including my lunch box, hoody, and hat.

    I don't know this machine intimately that we are modeling but I can give guidance on common things I see that are similar in design since I work at one of their production plants. We all do our production pretty much the same since big Bro has structured everything.

    I've had a lot of fun working on something that my company makes. Whenever we do any kind of construction projects outside at my plant they have to use Caterpillar equipment from third party contractors haha. So I get to see backhoe loaders similar to this one from time to time. Anywho know you know me a little better. I may not be the best blenderer but I am killer at PLC programming and turbine testing/hardware/and software troubleshooting. I've installed, removed, condemned and worked on industrial turbine equipment for the past 9 years after graduating in Mech Engineering. I currently support production testing of overhauled (newly restored) turbines that are tested in Texas and our other worldwide facilities.

    Much more I can say (I love to talk about myself haha) but this is already plenty.  Thanks again for this live stream.

    • Looked at the link about the checker deselect trick and yes , that would work (quite brilliant actually)...I saw it first here:  but like I said that was long ago;)

    • Yeah that was the first video that you linked when I was introduced to the workflow. Then I found the second video and I felt like it clicked a lot better. I can't say I have used it yet but have been keeping it in the back of my mind when I see stuff with super high resolution that needs to be simplified. Seems like less work than the old fashioned and painful "delete and start over" method.

      Not saying that method doesn't work but this becomes a welcomed option for some very specific use cases I think.

    • In this case I'd definitely opt for re-modelling, but the technique is great. I'll have to use it a few times to see how fast it is and when it would be useful.

      The delete and start over method might be painful, but so is falling down when learning to ride a bike.

      And the second time you do something (in Blender ) it is thrice as fast and twice as good...(or maybe that's just me)

    • Yeah, I was thinking of maybe using command recorder with this type of work to see if I could maybe even program something better?

      Yeah, like I said I have not used it either. I typically delete and start over too. But I really liked the possibilities here. Got my brain churning and made my jaw drop at how quickly I could decimate something manually and keep clean topology. I really like that Select Similar operator as well. I got introduced to it around the same time. I think it was probably the perfect time for it to "click" for me.

    • Should be fairly easy to make it into an addon, but, what I don't like is that I don't have any control; I can't turn a 32 edged cylinder into a 12 edged one...

      I tend to model everything myself and as I plan ahead, I will probably not find myself in a situation where I'd need this.

      But: I still think that the trick is great! Might be usable in completely different and unexpected situations.

    • Blanch, someone scratched parts of your security badge and left black parts, I'm sorry.

      That checker deselect technique is a killer. The video of the girl with the nice voice was the best one.  

    • For "CHECKER DESELECT" (Blender 2.8): In "EDGE SELECT" mode mark an "EDGE RING" with [ALT + CTRL + LEFT_MOUSE_BUTTON], call "CHECKER DESELECT" with "DESELECTED" 3, "SELECTED" 1 and "OFFSET" -1. Now, every fourth edge vertical to the selection direction is selected. You can now, if necessary, extend your selection beyond limiting "EDGE LOOPS" by Menu "SELECT" -> "SELECT LOOPS" -> "EDGE LOOPS". The "OFFSET" from the starting point (that is the active edge) is the key. It has to be "-1" so that the active edge stays selected. From this you simply specify how many neighbouring edges after this have to be "DESELECTED" and how many neighbouring edges after that again have to be "SELECTED"

      The settings for Blender 2.79 and older would be:
      "Nth SELECTION": 4
      "SKIP": 1
      "OFFSET": 0

      I find the new pattern definition in Blender 2.8 clearer: It starts with how many elements including the active element as starting point (if "OFFSET" is set to "0") are deselected and how many after this are selected.

  • theluthier Stop the press!  It turns out I am not today's hero after all - at least, not quite as much as I was given credit for!

    In the stream you asked me to double-check whether the schematic I found was really of the 434E, or was actually of some other model.  I did manage to verify that it IS from the 434E, there is no doubt.

    H O W E V E R...

    The discrepancies between the drawing you provided and the schematic I found were too great to ignore, especially since your drawing is from an official source, the brochures that come from CAT itself.  Looking at the photos in those brochures for the 434E, I saw a swing frame that is unmistakably the kind that appears in YOUR reference drawings, not mine.  I was very confused by this, so I began digging even deeper and I solved the mystery once and for all.

    Both styles of swing frame are correct, technically.  

    Here is a 2008 434E with the style I made:

    And here is a 2012 434E that clearly has the style that appears in your brochures:

    Sometime between the 2008 and 2012 model years the entire swing frame AND digger arm assemblies were upgraded for the 434E.  Notice that the 2012 model's digger arm matches the one you've been modeling, while the 2008's arm is different.  I'm not going to post all the photos and videos I looked through checking up on this; suffice to say that IMO the two digger arms are substantially different, mechanically, not just visibly different.  

    Since everyone else has been working from the references of the newer model, I've decided to change my swing and slide frames; the differences are too big for me to be willing to ignore.  But this does mean that I'd like you to take back your modification from the stream, and re-align your digger arm's hinge and latch pins with the positions on your reference, ignoring mine.  Your reference is correct for this part, and I'll be changing mine to match it.  Anything worth doing is worth doing right!

    Speaking of videos, I found a couple of videos that might be of interest to you.  The first one shows some close-up, good-resolution video of parts of the digger arm and its components that it's hard to find on image searches: 

    The second one shows both the digger arm and the front-loader in action, mechanically, in a way that really helped me visualize how everything works together.  blanchsb may want a look at this video too, since it shows (if you look closely enough) how the "jaw" function and those two pistons on the outside ends of the front-loader bucket work.

    • Looks like the removable pin there is an R-style pin (for easy disconnect) while the smaller digger bucket uses a cotter pin. Jeez looks like they are using a combination there. Nicely posted jjakeblended

      Yeah I watched that video for a lot of my reference. The quality is kinda poor on the 2nd video I had to watch it a lot haha.

    • Bonus links - for everyone!  Some more stuff I've found.

      I managed to find a site that has very clear drawings of almost every component we're all building!  Accurate ones too.  About the only thing I couldn't find were diagrams of the tires - of the wheels though, yes.  Note that with a very few exceptions these are not on-axis orthographic drawings of the parts; they are mostly drawings from angles, but they show a lot of bits and details that you'll have a difficult time finding in other images.  I've found this resource invaluable!


      It's worth the time exploring the catalog.  Don't bother with the categories "Machine Arrangement" and "Engine Arrangement" as there's nothing useful to us in them, but dig through the other categories, and keep in mind that you may find more than one useful drawing of a part, spread out under different categories and possibly with unintuitive names.  Also, some components, particularly the front-end loader bucket, have several different variants; you'll have to look through them all in that case and find the one that matches the variant you happen to be building.  

      You can also try using that catalog to find the part number of a certain part you'd like to see more of, and do a Google image search for "caterpillar [partnumber]" to try and find some actual photographs of the parts.  I've had some mixed success doing this for myself; your results may vary, and it's also a little time-consuming, so you'll have to decide for yourself if it's worth the effort.

      For duerer specifically, I happened to come across this site that has some very hi-res closeups of the axles and the insides of the wheels.  Go to this page, and in the left-hand column click the large link that says "Gallery (29)" in Russian.  Or, just look for the (29) at least.  Have a look through all of those until you get to the axle and wheel images and grab what you need.

      Does anyone understand how those pistons work on the big bucket?

      I suspect they extend / retract the bottom half, but I don't see how they connect. They seem to attach at both ends to the same piece of metal.

      edit: I see now from that video that they pull from the TOP! 


    • Anyone has one of them super details drawings of my battery box? Dude we are going so high detail here that I'm actually going to do the battery inside, down to the watts it needs to turn the tractor on. This thing is going to ignite when you put the key in it, because I will also model the actual key, if it turns on with a key.

    • Oh no I haven't forgotten about the shark. If we don't get to model the interior, that's ok, we'll just hang the key on the outside of the door, for people who feel tempted to go smash some ATM's.

      This is a breakthrough, sir! For one, the differences between the 2008 and 2012 models are significant indeed. I never would have guessed this. Once again, your research is making the project much better. I will revert my changes according to the 2012 👍

      And the part-specific diagram library you found is pure GOLD! Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

      It's probably going to take a couple days to 1) edit an abridged version of yesterday's stream and 2) sift through all our reference/project material but by early next week look for a 3) consolidated project directory featuring .blends, reference images, and web resources for us all to work from.

      You guys are making this project AWESOME! I'm so excited about it 😅 Cool ideas for a final presentation reel are cropping up as well.

    • After digging through the website jjakeblended provided, I stroke gold! Battery box with the battery and the other side with the step. This feels a little bit like Christmas.

      sshanr The array modifier can be tricky to understand, as can modifiers in general. I recommend watching this course if your new to them. While it features an older version of Blender, the conceptual information is still very helpful.

    • ppfbourassa yeah it's difficult to find close-ups of this spot that really show how the mechanism works but it appears to be arranged like this:

      There's a slot in the back of the bucket right behind each "hinge", and there seems to be a flange on the back of the hinge that sticks through the bucket there, which the cylinder connects to.

    • sshanr: The "Array Modifier" is very tricky. So don't worry, your're not alone with that problem.

      Please check, whether ...

      1)  ... your offset object for the "Array Modifier" is in the center of the wheel

      2) ... the offset object and your duplicated object have their origins in the same place (the distance between these two origins is take as offset from one duplicate to the next) 

      3) ... your tread object is rotated or scaled: undo them with ALT + R and ALT + S since these transformations are repeated for every duplicate !

      I can see that ...

      1) ... you have checked "Relative Offset" . Uncheck it. "Object Offset" is the only offset you need. 

      2) ... you have choosen the left side reference image (REF_left): Since it is not in the wheel's center (and it shouldn't be there!), place an empty (because it doesn't contain any occluding mesh) instead in the wheel's center and choose this empty  as "Object Offset" in your "Array Modifier"

      The rotation of the empty around the global x-axis (which is in our specific case also the wheel's rotation axis) determines how many degrees are between two neighbouring duplicates. And again: your tread's object origin must be in the same place as the object origin of your offset object (in our case the above mentioned empty)

    Working on the chassis today.

    Using everybody's parts to try and keep proportions correct. Very limited reference for the chassis, more of a challenge than I was expecting. May need adjusting as we progress. jjakeblended I saw your post on the swing frame being different from 2008 to 2012, when your done I think the swing frame hooks onto the top and bottom rail of the stabilizer frame. I may have to adjust the height, looking at the images they do look slightly lower on the 2012 model. I will upload this WIP to the Google sheet so maybe theluthier will update the file so we can adjust to fit when your done. I only had the blueprint drawings to go by for the height. Looking at the other images (Photos) I'm not so sure the blueprint drawing is reliably. dostovel there is a slight gap at the back of the battery box for the cables. I will be drilling the whole for the cables also.

  • adrian2301 That looks great!  Yes we'll have to see how tall the slide part of the swing frame ends up being.  I -think- the rear-view of the original references should show the height well enough; but I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to adjust the height of the chassis there if needed.  There's some hydraulic parts I'll need to attach to the chassis just forward of that stabilizer bar area too.
