Starting this so I can keep myself accountable. I want to get better at 3D modeling and I need an external force to keep me going.
Nothing spectacular, but it's something. The first modeling exercise: https://skfb.ly/68ExD
Sculpt January, Day 01 - Deep Sea
Time: 5 hours 31 mins
I actually pulled this from the Beneath the Waves Artstation contest I participated in some time ago. Feels like forever ago, but it's probably about a year lol. This was really too ambitious and I got lazy at the end. But hey, first day down, 30 more to go.
silentheart00 I'm liking this once sculpt a day thing, definitely something I wanna pursue at some point, just not this month. I especially love the first one. I dunno what it is but the hard, defined curves of the face just look really stylized and cool to me. Keep it up!
thecabbagedetective Thanks! The first one is a concept from another contest, a creature that moves very slowly and takes care of the coral reefs. The hard edges of the face kind of came when I was sculpting, a happy accident that I thought would compliment the softer contours nicely.
Sculpt January, Day 02 - Delight
Time: 1 hour 33 mins
I originally wanted to model a person with a paintbrush and some paints doing this sort of half dance/half painting the air sort of concept, but I didn't like it, so I made a controller instead. Video games can bring delight to its players, too =]
Sculpt January, Day 03 - Torso
Time: 1 hour 43 mins
A little backed up, but should be back on track now. A female torso. Man, I need to work on anatomy 😅The stomach's not bad, but man, the skeletal components are kinda bad. Oh well. Three days down, 28 to go.
Sculpt January, Day 04 - Rotten
Time: 2 hours 20 mins
I thought of zombies and other rotten things, but why not something more spoiled rotten, like Princess Morbucks from the Powerpuff girls?
Sculpt January, Day 05 - Spherical
Time: 0 hours 22 mins
A bit behind. Here's Day 05.
Sculpt January, Day 06 - Tiny
Time: 0 hours 50 mins
A bit behind. Here's Day 06.
Sculpt January, Day 07 - Speed
Time: 1 hours 46 mins
A bit behind again. Here's Day 07, a jet propelled snail!
silentheart00 really nice work on those sculpts. Fun idea with that snail. Love it
Sculpt January, Day 08 - Jekyll and Hyde
Time: 2 hours 13 mins
A bit behind still. I tried going for an angel/devil kind of idea. Less than successful, I think, because I'm feeling a bit crunched for time.
Sculpt January, Day 09 - Rage
Time: 2 hours 34 mins
All caught up. Thought I would try an animal. Could be better, but at least something's done.
I wonder what that weird shading issue is on the teeth.
Sculpt January, Day 10 - Beard
Time: 1 hours 15 mins
Finally caught up. I actually felt kind of sick today, an upset stomach sort of thing. I also could not for the life of me get to sleep last night so I'm (thankfully) quite tired.
I've noticed my quality went down as I started to get behind, so I'll make more of an effort to stay on track. Oi, time for some well earned sleep.
Also, small note: there doesn't seem to be a "polish" brush in 2.8. The best I got is flatten, so it'll do for now.
silentheart00 you're going smooth through the Sculpt January 👏
silentheart00 with polish do you mean smooth?
yyukinoh1989 nah, I mean like a hot knife through butter ^^
nekronavt hehe i know i kinda wondered the polish that silentheart mentioned in this sentence silentheart : Also, small note: there doesn't seem to be a "polish" brush in 2.8. The best I got is flatten, so it'll do for now.
yyukinoh1989 oh damn, I missread the author of post. Nevermind :D
nekronavt hehe np can happen . got that too sometimes :p its been a while since i sculpted but last time in 2.8 i still could smooth out
nekronavt Thanks, dude. Trying to keep it up and push myself!
yyukinoh1989 There's a brush in 2.7 called Polish, and it functions slightly differently than the Smooth brush. The Polish brush kind of planes off the surface at the angle you're looking at versus the overall smoothing affect of the Smooth brush. Try it in 2.7 yourself and see the difference.
silentheart00 All righty, finally had time to take a good look at your sculpts. You're making some nice stuff! I like that you're timing yourself, good way to monitor yourself.
My top 3 out of what you've done so far (in random order):
Keep it up! :)
Sculpt January, Day 11 - Liquid
Time: 0 hours 20 mins
I hadn't the faintest clue what to do, so I made something simple. Blender 2.8's sculpting tools seem to be less stable than before. Hopefully they'll see that hand fix it up. Sometimes I hit Undo, and it completely undoes the whole sculpt. Luckily I wasn't very far along, but man, it's annoying.
silentheart00 Nice progress.
That undo thing happened to me too a couple of times. It cost me a good amount of time in two days. Hopefully, dev team will fix it soon.
silentheart00 It's good to see you're still going strong with Sculpt January, wish I didn't have these projects to do as I'd be right alongside you, but that doesn't mean I can't cheer you on from the sidelines!
I'd still have to say that Deep Sea is still my favorite, but Speed is a pretty close second. Don't follow Sculpt January particularly closely so I'm looking forward to what the coming days have in store for you, intrigued by what's next!
thecabbagedetective Hey, thanks. Maybe next January, eh? The biggest thing for me was figuring out what I can do in a reasonable time but still being ambitious with it. I'd like to think I'm improving, as well, but it's hard to see when you're in the thick of it. I have some ideas for later ones, too, just have to execute.
Yeah, it's quite annoying to have your work suddenly disappear, which is why I'm constantly saving. At least if you save often enough, you can reload it.
Sculpt January, Day 12 - Staff
Time: 1 hour 38 mins
What if my hexblade was a heavier magic use than a sword user? This would be her staff. Partially, anyway. I like the claw bit, but the other end is kind of weak in a design sense.
silentheart00 nice works again. I just noticed that I cannot open the last one you made. Getting an error page
yyukinoh1989 Ah, thanks for that! I should do these earlier so I'm not making sleepy mistakes. It's updated now.
silentheart00 the staff looks great. Love the design look forward to see more :)
Sculpt January, Day 13 - Empty
Time: 0 hour 29 mins
Something a little different and a little minimalist.
Sculpt January, Day 14 - Flexing
Time: 0 hour 55 mins
Practiced some anatomy courtesy of my SO's arm. The bicep is a little weird, though.
silentheart00 a bit of critique. On your hand, it looks like deltoid is not in the right place. In this position, it should be more on the back side, between bicep and brachialis (I lost this detail on my latest sculpt by the way, and placed it between brachialis and triceps 😅)
And on your sculpt it looks like it lying on the bicep.
But looks pretty good overall. And as I always say, I'm not expert enough, so take my notices with a grain of salt and do your own research 🙂
nekronavt It's good to have another set of eyes. Just goes to show I need to focus on anatomy next month.
Day 15 WIP
(Currently 2 hours 58 mins)
Well, now I'm running quite behind. Yesterday I went to eat with some friends and that took forever, plus had to grocery shop. I'm mildly annoyed because I didn't think it would take that long, but oh well, that's life. Here's a sneak peek of an Inmyeonjo, a Korean mythological beast.
The feathers are going to take a lot of time. Maybe I can find a quick way of duplicating them around.
silentheart00 really great so far I love it
Sculpt January, Day 15 - Hybrid
Time: 3 hours 45 mins
Finished for now. I would've added the hat, but I'm running a couple days behind now. I need to catch up.
silentheart00 nice work you done. How Many days are you running behind?
yyukinoh1989 About 3, including today. But, that's what the weekend's for, I guess?
silentheart00 that indeed is true . youre doing great so far keep this up buddy :)
silentheart00 Good job! The human face on the bird creeps me out, but so do a lot of japanese mythological creatures ^^
Sculpt January, Day 16 - Melancholy
Time: 1 hours 53 mins
Trying to catch up, not feeling great, hoping I don't fall too far behind.
silentheart00 looking good. Nice expression. Hope you catch up with them
silentheart00 Nice one! Anatomy may be improved at some points (face looks a bit flat in my opinion), but topic expression is well done.
nekronavt Yeah, I know the face is bad. Not my best work.
Sculpt January, Day 17 - Hand Pose
Time: 2 hours 30 mins
Tried to challenge myself a little, but not the greatest thing out there, especially since I have trouble with hands anyway.
silentheart00 I think the hand is pretty good done. one thing that looks a bit off is the thumb. I think it's a bit too short. But I am not sure. Still you did really good.
silentheart00 The hand looks really good!
I agree with yukino, the thumb´s a bit short and I think the space between the index and middle finger is a bit too wide. But I can´t tell if it´s just my preference....
Keep it up!
yyukinoh1989 fide Yeah, thumb's not great. Need to stop working on these so late at night.
Sculpt January Day 18 WIP 01 - Damaged
(Currently 4 hours 41 mins)
I've had this concept for a few weeks. Originally I was going to draw it, but why not sculpt it? Might still draw it anyway. Need to finish the mouth area, maybe add some hair.
silentheart00 looks like a really nice concept . looks like part of a mask thats broken . would be nice to add a scar to his left eye (since he has it closed i have the feeling its hurted :) . really great work so far silent
silentheart00 Hi Silent, I was a bit behind with checking your sculpts, but here I am :) from the new ones I checked out I really like day 11 (nice and fluid) and day 12 (I love the details of the bird claw!)
I also really like where day 18 is going, I think that's your best one so far. Really nice details, it all look very realistic. Awesome stuff! Curious to see the finished piece.
Keep going you're doing great!
yyukinoh1989 ssmurfmier1985 Thanks!
silentheart00 Damaged looks good so far. Keep going!
Sculpt January Day 18 - Damaged
(Time: 5 hours 57 mins)
So, I've had this concept for a while, sort of a "We all have a mask to hide behind and never show people our suffering" mentality. I might end up drawing it because I want to add things like a hand with really long nails ripping away the flesh and I don't know if I can accomplish that in 3D yet.
Six days behind...... Oi.
silentheart00 wow you truly did it this time. This really is my favorite so far. Great expression and meaning you gave to the model. I also love the details. Really amazing job. I hope you catch up with them go for it.
yyukinoh1989 Thanks. I'll give it my best shot!
silentheart00 The anatomy is a bit off but nothing you can't fix with looking at a book or something like that :D I like it overall. The emotion is really there.
drgnclw Could you elaborate where the anatomy need correction?
I fully understand my anatomy needs work, which I have outlined in my Sketchbook. While I try to be conscious of anatomy while sculpting this month, I admit I'm settling so I can get through the sculpts. Once I get through this, I will refocus efforts towards anatomy studies.
Sculpt January Day 20 - Split
(Time: 0 hours 17 mins)
Feeling a little run down, mildly out of ideas. Just trying to get through the month.
silentheart00 Sorry, my bad. I though it would be a long post and might seem a little patronizing. Since I'm very new to anatomy, I don't feel comfortable just dishing out criticisms :D But I'll try my best.
At a first glance the head seems very round from the side.
The ears seem too high and a bit behind. Usually, they are between the center line of the eyes and the corner of the mouth and from the side, they start where the jaw connects to the rest of the head (Which is the half point from the side) with an angle.
I have drawn the bottom line a bit higher than where the jaw actually ends since the mouth is open. It's kind of difficult to decide where it should sit. But from this, the jaw seems a bit short.
The lips are a bit nonexistent. Coupled with a lack of philtrum and the short jaw, whole area seems a bit cramped and flat (Putting all the features in a small area makes it look cartoony/stylish. Flat is bad but cramped might be intentional :D)
The nose seems wide and short. Although the side parts of the nose (I don't know what they're called :D) can widen with an expression like that, the nostrils also move with those parts and change their shape. However, yours are also undetailed so you might already know this.
The front plane of the nose is very rounded which gives it a baby-like look.
The creases in the side parts of the nose also seem a bit unnatural. From what I've seen so far, they're prominent where the side parts meet the face. Though, this might be different because of the expression.
And lastly, the features of the face seem like they could wrap around the skull a bit smoother but I can't say this for sure as this is something I'm struggling with.Sorry if there is any incoherency and I might have missed some stuff. I'm a bit sleepy :)
drgnclw Here are a few nice Sacred Geometry resources to look at:1-2-Sacred Geometry Artis listLooking forward to see more of your work
drgnclw Sorry, forgot to reply. Thanks for pointing those things out to me, and it helps to practice your eye by giving critiques, as well. I agree things are a bit wonky and I need to refocus on anatomy.
Sculpt January Day 19 - Obsure
(Time: 0 hours 46 mins)
Feels a bit derivative, but oh well. Gotta get the obvious ideas out to make room for the more interesting ones.
Nice work with both models I love the expression. You're doing great. The weekend is there so hope you will catch up. You're almost there
I'm calling it. I am done with SculptJanuary. It was fun while doing it, but the farther I got behind the less fun it was. Plus, the Anthem VIP demo was this weekend, so I was messing around in that all weekend. Fun stuff. I like it, but it's not for everyone. I'm curious about the story since all you get in the demo is one little slice, but the combat feels good. And flying! I love flying so much! I've come to realize I really want a flying game. It's just really fun and adds another dimension to gaming. If you're interested in Anthem, there's an open demo next weekend, too.
Onward with modeling!
silentheart00 you still went much further than I :D Good work this month!
nekronavt Thanks. I did my best.
silentheart00 Good decision Silent, no point in pushing yourself with something you don't feel like doing anymore, that only gets you stuff your not happy with instead of something that pushes your skills to the next level.
Looking forward to your next work that you enjoy making! 😊
ssmurfmier1985 Thanks =]
I thought I'd take a slight break before hopping back on my Challenger and retopo the Deep Sea Beast sculpt. The sharp lines in the face are going to be challenging in regards to edge flow, as seen here:
How to resolve this, if it even matters... I'm not terribly concerned about it, since this will not be a blinking (deforming) section of the mesh, but it would be nice to have a termination point for easier tracking of topology flow, I suppose. I'll keep fiddling or let it bubble in the background.
silentheart00 You should hide some polys junction or reduction 4 to 2 under the hair.
Nice work on sculpt january. You really nailed arms and hands anatomy on this creature.
