Polybook - silentheart00
Starting this so I can keep myself accountable. I want to get better at 3D modeling and I need an external force to keep me going.
Nothing spectacular, but it's something. The first modeling exercise: https://skfb.ly/68ExD

Whoops, kind of got all wrapped up in the class in August, kind of forgot I did some work on the Challenger beforehand.
I was working on the tail light before I got swept up in the class. Guess I'll continue that.
-
silentheart00 Woah, you are doing great.
-
mmahir07 Thanks.
-
-
hey nice work with the exercise model with primitives . it looks really good . also the car looks amazing already. youre doing great .
btw do you notice strange things with sketchfab too? when looking at models strange stretched artifacts appears while its not in the original model-
yyukinoh1989 Thanks! I've only noticed one case where sketchfab had artifacts for me, and that was the Melvin sculpt. Something funky between the decimate modifier and sketchfab happened and there's weird artifacts. I don't know what to do about that, though.

Retopoing my bust sculpt from the August class. I think I'll jump between this and the Challenger.
I want Retopoflow more than ever now.... But I should suffer a little bit to understand...
-
Finished the tail lights.
-
Retopoing.

silentheart00 https://cgcookie.com/lesson/salvaging-detail
Watch this. It would be easier for you to retopology with all details but with less work -
mmahir07 I'm curious, why did you show me that video?
-
silentheart00 It helped a lot in retopology. So I thought it might help you as well. Actually when I retopology my first character it was very hard for me and I thought ahh I am losing so many details but after seeing that video I found it very helpful so I thought everyone should know about it. But if you know it already that's awesome.
-
mmahir07 Nah, I was just curious as to why. You're paying it forward, and that's cool.
-
-
Redid the retopo with the new knowledge I gained. Tried to be really conscious of the choices I made, if they make sense, etc. Things are starting to make sense now.
-
The journey continues. Might have another go at the shoulder retopology. I think I can do better!
-
YEAH! I FREAKING DID IT! Here it is, a retopoed bust!
Oh my goodness, ears are challenging. Even more challenging when you're not making a traditional ear! I retried 4 or more times, but each time got better. Holy guacamole! I feel accomplished!
Critiques are always welcome.
-
silentheart00 Good job!
-
mmahir07 Thanks!

Overall, you're doing great and hitting most of the key loops you need, but you do have one missing.
Around the eyes, you're doing great. You have both the loops around the eyes and the raccoon mask that goes around both. You're also doing great with the loops around the nostril and the mouth.
Where you're missing just a little... the one that come from the chin and by the ear.. that one should pass by the ear and go over the top of the head instead of turning at the ear... which now I look you have on the row before it.. but that particular loop (the one currently going past the ear and over the head) I think should turn back up and go over the bridge of the nose just outside the outer eye mask.
This classic CG Cookie tutorial by Jonathan Williamson I'm glad is available on YouTube because it's a great reference for face topology.
https://youtu.be/im9XZf2C1s0The loop I'm talking about is what helps to form the "smile" crease.
(That video is classic NOT because of the info, but because of the version of Blender, but I think it's still VERY relevant because it's more of a theoretical video that would be true regardless of program your using.)
(also... now I see that video again.. that loop I was talking about turning at the ear does seem to be right)

gradyp Thanks for the feedback. I know there are issues with this, but I just wanted to get it done. I'll keep all of that in mind in the future.
-
silentheart00 You know, that's the same attitude I used when I made my first char (the one that's my profile pic)... I knew there were a lot of flaws, but I figured I could fix them in later projects.. I just wanted to complete my first posable character :D
-
gradyp Well, this is more like I need a portfolio for a grad school and the early admissions are in December, so I need to get stuff completed. They don't expect people applying to know 3D, so I'm hoping they view this as a good start, but could be made better, if that makes sense.

MODELING FINISHED.
The mirror is done. The modeling is done. Woohoo!
Shh...... we don't need fog lights.....
-
silentheart00 Nice!! How about some window wipers..?
-
ssmurfmier1985 Shh... we don't need no stinking window wipers....
-
-
Aha! I'm figuring out this texture business! Although, I have a feeling I should've applied the subsurf, saved out the UV map, and then based my texturing off that. But that's learning, right?
-
silentheart00 I spy with my little eye texturing in 2.8!! Great progress 😊
-
ssmurfmier1985 lol, thanks! Now I'm making progress!
-
silentheart00 Took a closer look at that paint job and it looks great! Looking forward for the finished version.
-
drgnclw Thanks! I have a really sweet paint job idea I can finally implement! Might tweak the sparkles in the paint, though, now there's a layer of orange; doesn't show too well.
-
silentheart00 indeed the sparkles are better visible at front cap then near the windows. There it's not really visible anymore. It really looks great so far

Help
I don't know what happened, I was able to see the UVs just fine, and now I can't and it's driving me nuts. They export just fine, so they're there, somewhere. I've tried selecting a face and hitting L to find it in the UV editor, but it's not working either. Maybe I accidentally turned off a setting while fiddling on the keyboard. 2.8 Beta.
-
Moved back to 2.7 until I figure out what's up with 2.8. Getting there!
-
silentheart00 Can't wait to see this one finished 😬 Keep going!
-
-
Oi, texturing across several pieces is a touch more difficult than slapping on a wood texture on a plane lol. Getting there slowly.
-
silentheart00 really nice it looks really great already
-
yyukinoh1989 Thanks!
Textures are done! Now I need to add shaders. Maybe model those last little details, too. I know, should've gotten the modeling out of the way, but I was just excited to make textures lol.
-
silentheart00 I like the asymettry. Getting closer to the final stretch :D
-
silentheart00 really great work . agree with drgnclw the asymettry is nice done . really look forward to see the shaders added and the final result. its really amazing already keep this up :D
-
silentheart00 Loving the stripes :)
-
drgnclw Thanks! I've been exploring asymmetry for a while now, and it's more interesting to me than symmetry lol.
yyukinoh1989 ssmurfmier1985 Thanks!

-
Hrmmm..... Should I move this back into 2.8 now that the textures are done or figure out how to work in the textures into that long chain of nodes...? It was certainly mush easier in 2.8, but I should figure out how to do it in 2.7 since it's stable.... Hmm...... Maybe I can find answers in the Sci-fi helmet course...
Anyway, made the car shader from Shader Forge and now I have to figure out how to incorporate the textures into the shader. To the courses!
-
silentheart00 not sure what would best you can always switch to 2.8 if it's easyer there. But from the image I see I have to say really nice work love the sparkles effect.
-
silentheart00 Final streeeeetch, you can do it man. If I was you I'd probably stick to 2.8, you've come this far, but make a backup just in case.
-
thecabbagedetective Yeah, might just stick with 2.8 because it's ridiculously easy to mix the texture and principle shader into exactly what I want whereas 2.7 requires a little more thinking. Just need to get this done (and tout 2.8's superiority =P)!
-
-
Here we go, 2.8 Eevee. At least the paint job is consistent now. Time to get the other shaders up to snuff and remember where the settings for shadows are lol.
-
silentheart00 oh man, this is the exciting part, where it comes to life!!! Looking forward to it 😃
-
silentheart00 awesome great job so far i look forward to see the finished result . it gonna be awesome
-
silentheart00 That reminded me of older Need For Speed games. Not because it looks old but because I really liked Dodge Challenger in NFS: Carbon :D
-
drgnclw Heh, thanks! I really like the Challenger's looks. Something understated and classic about it, unlike the Mustang or Camaro.
-
-
Now with fog lights!
Aaaaaaand I need to clean up the texture a little bit. Had a feeling the texture would get a little wonky once I added more geometry. Oh well. Live and learn.
-
Cleaned it up! Looks better at a distance lol
-
silentheart00 really nice work. It looks so great. It's a successful cleanup

Since everybody is making goals for the new year, I figured I should join the band wagon! Here's my rough plan related to modeling (barring any workshops here =]) for the next 7-ish months until I'm off to grad school.
January
- Sculpt January - I haven't participated before, but it looks like a lot of fun and a great way to push my sculpting skills. Even if I don't finish, it's better than nothing.
February
- Polish up the Challenger shaders
- Light the Challenger
- Render a scene
March
- Sculpt the rest of the pieces for the Kilyn bust
- Retopologize said pieces
- Add shaders
- Light and Render
April
- Sculpt Mordecai Pompinski (or Valentino de Fleur)
- Retopologize
- Shaders
- Light and Render
May
- Sculpt Chaos
- Retopologize
- Shaders
- Light and Render
June
- Sculpt Hazard
- Retopologize
- Shaders
- Light and Render
July
- Sculpt a monster
- Retopologize
- Shaders
- Light and Render
August
- Packing up and moving to grad school!
All the while watching as many videos as I can. I'm currently in the Creature Modeling for Production in the Modeling in Blender flow, so I should be able to have that all watched in about a week or so, then on to the next course!
Good luck to everyone with their goals! We got this!
-
silentheart00 good plan! This should be achievable 😄👍🏻
-
silentheart00 that's a pretty detailed plan :) Personally, I never planning in such an accurate pieces. Good luck!
-
ssmurfmier1985 Thanks!
nekronavt Neither do I, but I know what topics are going to be taught in grad school, so I'd like to get ahead a little bit if I can, especially since it sounds like a very challenging program.
-
Good job Silent:)
