So finally found time to start this class, learned a lot from the flows and courses, but this is the first time with the classes, excited about this.
WIP - Did the Treasure Chest course and wanted to elaborate on what i have learned from that.
scottwaite78 Padlock is a nice addition. Good work.
drgnclw thanks, im not sure if the padlock is too low poly at the minute
scottwaite78 Looks good so far!
scottwaite78 No way is the padlock too low poly.
spikeyxxx Cool thanks for that
scottwaite78 It looks fine to me. Rivets and the chains on the lock look a bit dense, though.
drgnclw yeah good point, i thought that too, i'm so used to doing high poly stuff, its a bit of a challenge to turn that off and change my thought process.
WIP 2 - Added some more detail.
scottwaite78 Nice skulls!
Don't forget some 'damage';)
spikeyxxx thanks yeah thats what i have to do next :)
Wow I like how you put the steel around the woods planks, like they are encased in the steel, makes it look really sturdy. Must be holding something very valuable.
ddoulos4iesou thanks thats the look i was going for, glad thats how it comes across.
WIP 4 - Started adding some damage and splits in the planks. still have to do the frame on the top.
Homework - Week 1
scottwaite78 Looks awesome Scott!
spikeyxxx thank you so much, that means a lot :)
scottwaite78 Nice detail too, I like the padlock and handles on the side.
scottwaite78 Wow, I love it.
scottwaite78 Nice work! Looking forward to the final product!
Inspiring work scottwaite78 - looks amazing
Welcome to the class scottwaite78! Each WIP you posted was a leap forward in progress and interest. Each little detail you added makes the model more intriguing: Padlock, then the keys, then the skull-n-crossbones, then the nicks and dings. Really great stuff.I can't say I have any criticisms at this point. It's an A+ in my book. This thing will look awesome textured and shaded!
theluthier Thank you so much for the input
Week 2 - WIP 1
Unwrapping done, was difficult to get the frame parts of the model to have no stretching on the UVs, so had to separate them into there own islands.
Week 2 - WIP 2
Base colour added
For the Scratches and extra details created my own brushes which made adding some finer detail a lot easier
Close up of the wood grain which i feel could do with some better definition and the scratches
Homework - Week 2
scottwaite78 Great job Scott!
spikeyxxx thanks a lot
scottwaite78 nice work! :)
scottwaite78 You did a really good job with the skulls. They look very bony!
scottwaite78 that chest is looking sweeet,’ nice job!
scottwaite78 Wow! Those micro scratches really help sell the metal-ness of the texture! Fantastic job.
scottwaite78 Really nice texture work, Scott! You've got appealing tonal variety, details, edge + crevice detection..Nothing really to critique for me. It's an A this week easily.
still not a big fan of blenders texture paint workflow, substance painter is still my go too program but it was fun.
My hats off to you for giving Blender texture paint a go. I'm really hoping (and expecting) Blender to incorporate a more substance-like workflow in the coming years 🙏
Just wait till this texture is working in concert with a material 🤩
theluthier thank Kent your classes and courses are always my favourite and have learned so much. Yeah i'm hoping that blender will eventually get closer to Substance too.
Just wait till this texture is working in concert with a material
Yeah i am looking forward to that too and have quite a few ideas of where to go with it, materials and shading i feel have been a weakness of mine for a long time, and really looking forward to learning more.
Anything i could have done done better or differently to improve on it would be a great help.
Thanks everyone, I had fun with this one, and learned a lot about using eevee, still not a big fan of blenders texture paint workflow, substance painter is still my go too program but it was fun.
Week 3 - WIP 1
Homework Submission - Week 3
scottwaite78 Way to go finishing week 3, Scott! Each class has seen about a 50% falloff rate for the last week so your commitment to finishing is commendable 👍
Overall I really like your final render. The materials' reflectivity is subtle which gives it a more of a diffuse look, kinda like claymation. So to me the wood doesn't appear laquered and the metal doesn't read obviously like metal *at first glance*. However as I study it closer I certainly can tell it's metal and non-laquered wood is plenty reasonable.
Personally I like to see more reflectivity involved mostly because I think reflections make for more interesting renders. BUT this is a subjective preference and not a rule by any means. The biggest question I have though is what's on the floor board. Right now it reads more like paint, but if it's supposed to be water - I love that idea! If you're going for water, it basically needs to be pure reflection over top of a slightly darkened version of the floor board color.
Would you be willing to let me download your final .blend to possibly mess around with the material during the stream tomorrow? If so, please pack your .blend file to include the textures (File > External Data > Pack all into .blend) then save with a new file name adding "_packed" in the name. Then use dropbox or google drive to provide a download link for me.
theluthier Thanks for the input Kent, yeah the wood on the chest was kind of deliberate choice, as i didn't want the wood to be lacquered having been in the ocean i wanted it to be pretty diffuse, the metal I agree, i struggled to get the right level of reflection I didn't want it to be too shiny but i probably under did it overall
The biggest question I have though is what's on the floor board. Right now it reads more like paint, but if it's supposed to be water
Yeah it was supposed to be water like a puddle, I really struggled with this and I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong with it but now you have said it, it does look like paint. It was a mixture of your tutorial in the Treasure Chest course and one of Andrew Price's on Puddles in Blender, i could not for the life of me get this to work together and one is probably overiding the other.
Would you be willing to let me download your final .blend to possibly mess around with the material during the stream tomorrow?
Of course that would be great, any insight into this process would be greatly appreciated. Here is the the link:
Please let me know if there is any problem downloading the link.
