    yup, thats why asked the 2.8 vs 2.7 qs...the concepts will be same, but wew have to get used to new hotkeys :(

    You can use the Vector on the individual node handles

    Yes. In this case here i would select the outer loop and convert it to a curve

    I still use the 2.79 hotkey setup, not completely unstuck from the past.

    I had to reset the walk/fly shortcut key, because I always use it for camera placement.

Because I think the stitching is fun to make..

A random project, perhaps, but it's a fun one nonetheless! Using curves and procedural thread materials we can achieve a high-fidelity result without too much work or time. Just think of all the patches and embroidery you can add to your characters! ;)
