Create Realistic Particle FX

  • Software:Unity 5.5  ·
  • Difficulty:Intermediate

Rules of the Exercise

  • 1
Create a particle effect in Blender of your choosing and export out an image sequence
  • 2
Use the image sequencer to build a sprite sheet in Unity
  • 3
Create a Shuriken particle system using the sprite sheet and add additional details you desire

We Have Fire!

In this exercise you'll be required to build a realistic particle effect from scratch. Using Blender create a particle simulation of your choosing. Ideally this would be something that cannot be easily recreated in Unity. Fire and smoke are great for this. Generate your images then build a Shuriken particle system in Unity from the resultant sprite sheet created. Provide a link to the video of your particle effect running in Unity. Have fun! ExplosionFX

Additional Details

Bring additional realism to your effect by adding smaller details like:
  • Floating embers or residual particle effects
  • Flickering Lights
  • Noise
  • Fading In/Out
  • Increasing/Decreasing particle size
  • Child particle effects
  • Audio Clips

Required Resources

Feel free to use the same platform to display your particle effects as those show in the video. It's not required to follow along. You will need to utilize the Image Sequencer tool from Unity which can be found here: https://blogs.unity3d.com/2016/11/09/experimental-feature-vfx-toolbox-image-sequencer/ *please note, do not create a particle effect using the pre-made sequences with this tool. Build your own and learn how to use the tool.
