For my first game attempt I decided to go back to one of my earliest gaming memories; Super Mario Bros on the NES. I am going for a 3D version of the side scroller which I figured would be an easy way to start with Unity. I am finding that nothing is easy when you don’t know what you are doing
So far I have just “blendered” most of the level and enemies. I’m playing with javascript and have managed to create instances of coins coming out of a brick when punched. It’s not easy but it’s fun
Thanks a lot Patrick and Gabriel. I am learning a lot from you guys.

I think that, though it maybe learning the hard way, it stays with you when you learn from mistakes

Same with me. Slowly going through all their tuts.

I feel the same way about old games and movies that the big studios insist on remastering or converting perfectly good material to 3D because they are afraid something new might fail.
Since I am admittedly not a creative person and am a total newb and hobbiest, I am attempting to do a 3D version of a game I loved. For me it is a technical exercise to learn some of the many areas of a game engine such as
- instancing (for coin generation and destruction)
)
- colliders/triggers
- character control
- HUD
- lighting (my nemesis)
- asset modelling and texturing (my mario character is so bad that if I showed it to people, I risk getting kicked off the internet
ah ive also had to learn most of those the hard way
Nice learning project, hope to try the level out one day
