UnityCookie opens it’s doors!

We are excited to open up Unity Cookie to the community of CG Cookie. We have now expanded our family of sites to 7 which are operating under the Cg Cookie umbrella. In our network we now have: BlenderCookie, MaxCookie, Mavenseed, ModoCookie, ConceptCookie, Blender Artists, and now UnityCookie.

What you can expect from Unity Cookie

We’ve enlisted the help of Patrick Boelens, and Gabriel Williams to help keep the site fresh with weekly tutorials and downloads. Wes and Jonathan are hoping to contribute some time to the site as well on the education front.

We will be covering as many different topics as we can through the life of the site, and most of this is and will be based on your feedback. We’ve opened up a Unity Cookie specific tutorial topic suggestion form below, and this is listed in the footer of the site.

Traditionally downloads and resources have worked well on the other sites, but for Unity Cookie we wanted to work in prefabs and packages that are ready for download and usable in-game.

The gallery system is similar to the rest of the network, though these categories are meant for screen shots of in-game environments in Unity, User Interface etc.. Key thing being in-game screens shots on what you’ve pulled off with Unity 3D.

Initially the site will not be committing to an EVERY Friday Citizen release with the site being so new, but will be working to get there. :)

Getting Started With Unity

Following the lead from Blender Cookie we worked to create a “Getting Started with Unity” section on the site. These sections are essential if you are brand new to the software and looking to obtain a crash course. These are short videos meant to give you a quick overview of the software. We are also going to be offering more in-depth introductions videos over the next few weeks.

UnityCookie Newsletter

With the new site we are now offering a site newsletter. Inside the newsletter we will be offering periodic site updates, special offers and anything that may be going on around the studio. Join the Newsletter

Enough of my rambling… on to the site!

  1. be a very good job as always, I admire them for being so generous and dump all their experience in programs despite being free, it would be almost impossible to learn yourself. Thank you.

      Hey Wicked,

Your feedback has been duly noted, but I feel the need to point out that JavaScript is pretty much equally powerful as C#, as they’re both just dialects of UnityScript. As for safe coding, I’m guessing you mean the script typing, which you can turn on by placing “#pragma strict” at the start of your JS files. =)

And of course welcome to the new Cookie!

I’m glad to see this up and running as well! With regards to learning Blender, Blender Cookie has been the best resource by far for me. I’ve been learning/playing with Unity going on 9+ months, I’ll be interested to see what you guys have to offer ;)

Can you slow down the featured item slider? You can’t really read what it says before it is going to the next slide.

Sure thing – if you also place your mouse over a slide, it should pause until you remove the mouse.

Welcome Patrick & Gabriel to the CG Cookie Family. Being completely new to Unity look forward to learning to use it with Blender. Having downloaded Unity, but not yet installed it; I would be very much interested in seeing a tutorial on the best way to do that and a recommended directory structure along with a suggested “Work-Flow”.

    Thank You,

      Thanks Oldman :)
There is, actually, a tutorial on downloading and installing Unity for the first time- we really wanted to show the process of starting with Unity completely from scratch! As for things like best practices, directory structure, and work-flow, etc- well, maybe we’ll hit that up too?

        Gabriel,

Where do I find the tutorial you mentioned? Also last night I tried to install Unity & after it installed it came up and said it was only a 30 day trial. I thought that the basic Unity was free. I am only a hobist & cannot afford to buy Unity as much as I would like to.

      • Hi Daniel,

Only the Pro version is a 30 day trial; soon as the 30 days is up your Unity version will automatically revert to the free version.

I had to add that. LOL :)

After all I learned about Blender here, I’m looking forward to learning Unity.

Hi,Wes, Patrick Boelens, and Gabriel Williams
    Welcome gentlemen,
Another door open to good quality educational contents and practical uses using Blender,Unity.
I, followed few tutorials by Ptrick, empowering me to model, texture, create sci-fi panels, creating various maps. They were full of educational contents.Hope, this spirit will continue. My time will be spent here more productive.I may point out, recently I, model a gauge. This subject is vast practical and interesting. here is my link.

One thing I hope is a tutorial how to build a simple (indoor) level in Blender and import it into unity. There is a lot of information on the internet, but a real tutorial I didn’t find.

I’m curious if you guys will be doing any tutorials on making games for IOS/Android. While I’d love to make “the next GTA” I think games smaller in scope aimed at those platforms or more feasible for me and others. I wasn’t sure if you can use the free Unity version to make games for those platforms or if you need the pro version to do so.

      Neither.

iOS and Android are separate licenses from Unity Technologies. In fact there are 4. If you have the free Unity you can get basic Android and basic iOS licences for $400 each. If you have Unity pro then there are pro licenses for Android and iOS at $1500 each.

The 30 day Unity Pro trial if you’ve just installed it includes an iOS pro trial too.

Actually I think you can mix and match the basic/pro Android iOS licenses with the basic/Pro versions of Unity but I’m not 100% sure on that.

Thanks for the info! I’ll need to read the licenses at some point, but no where near capable of making a full game yet. lol. I’ll use the free version and UnityCookie to learn my way around Unity before I get to that point. Hopefully UnityCookie helps me get there quicker!
