Satellite Replica

I wanted this to be a space scene, but I couldn’t figure out how to get the background and reflections looking perfect. In the end, I decided on a ‘model’ view. Looking back on it, less intense depth of field would’ve helped, as well as changing the platform to have a matte finish.

Modeled in 3DS Max
Rendered with VRay
Some post work in Photoshop

It has a lovely smooth appearance to it -perhaps not a look synonymous with the majority of satellites. Also the solar panels look slightly bent and to some degree thin. Perhaps a basic star field and/or planet look would’ve been better than this background. Actually the DOF looks ok the satellite is more or less in focus so don’t beat yourself up over that :)

Thanks! Actually, I was going through my sketchbook (okay, it was the back of some scrap paper) and I thought of creating some sort of futuristic tech. I’d say the ‘gun’ from Portal was my key inspiration for the style, what with the glowing strips of light.
The major issue with creating a background was that I wanted it to seem shiny, and starfield images are very dark. Also, I couldn’t have a planet in the background while it is being reflected from the foreground, so I kinda skimped on the environment. Maybe I’ll come back to this.

Star fields are dark but your image has black in it so it wouldn’t of mattered that much since satellites in space has some reflective elements. Looks like you got stuck between a rock and a hard place. That said I can see where your coming from the portal aspect of the image :)
