Introduction
In this video for 3ds max we’ll start a new series to understand how to use the new iRay Material to create different realistic objects. This time we’ll start focusing on jewels.
What we’ll do
This time we’ll take a look at a new topic : rendering jewels with iRay Material. We talked a little bit about this new free plug-in for 3ds max created by NVidia Arc, (Mental Images), able to create amazing photoreal surfaces and materials. In this tutorial we’ll see how to model a simple ring using basic features as spline modeling, lofts and direct poly editing. We’ll prepare a 3-point light stage in a simple environment, and for Part 1 we’ll prepare a jewel box mesh, that will be finalized in Part 2, this time we’ll prepare simple shaders using iRay preset to simulate surfaces as silk, but we’ll prepare a white gold material for ring metal parts and we’ll use a diamond preset too. In Part 2 we’ll tweak some shaders to finalize these meshes, and we’ll add more complex ring models to simulate more photoreal surfaces.

Great tutorial.
Thanks !
Well the problem is that i cant find the IRAY material in 3d studio max 2012
It’s a plugin/material you have to download from nvidia I believe.
You are right, you have to download it from NVidia Arc, (mental images), forum/website. The problem is that it is available just for 3ds max 2013. So if you like to follow this tutorial on 3ds max 2012, you have to use just the Arch&Design materials.
Well done
Thanks Alban
nice tutor, like always
sorry, i want to ask something,
can I use IRay in max 2010 ?
at the beginning, i want to use 3ds max 2011, because i think IRay available in 3ds max 2011 or higher
but there are some problem so i just install 3ds max 2010
Hi, thanks, no you can’t use iRay with 3ds max 2010. In this case you have to use Mental ray with Arch&Design shader.
