In this new tutorial for 3ds max, we’ll start to talk about Skinning. This tutorial will be the start of a new line talking about character modeling, rigging, animation and skinning, so we’ll take a look at basic features using Skin modifier and Physique modifier. We’ll see how to setup a rough arm skeleton and how to add it using skinning to deform a cylinder, then we’ll talk about envelopes and muscles using bulge editors, and the skin deformers to avoid and solve problems.

Can you make a tutorial with CAT?
Merry Cristmas Alessandro!
Hi Mihai,
thanks for your words. Sure, we’ll release some CAT tutorials really soon !
Stay tuned !
Cool Tutorial man !
I’ve always had problems understanding the tools for rigging/skinning, and not just in Max. I got a question though. Is this whole lattice deformation thing okay to use for Games Characters skinning? I know that in animation for games you got all kinds of limitations that you don’t have in animation for, say, production, mostly due to Real Time and all.
I’ve watched quite a few tuts about rigging and skinning for games, and they don’t usually mention the lattice deformations. They generally stick to the bone tools and adjust the influence on the vertices without necessarily editing the envelopes themselves, so that’s why I was wondering whether the lattice deformers are okay to use for Real Time purposes.
Thanks again Italian neighbour (I’m French ^^)
Wow great tutorial!!!!
A.Cangelosi: thanks you a lot for this tutorial, we need some stuff of rendring (sss, or render pass…)
thanks again
Hi, thanks for the comment. We have some intro tutorials about a lot of rendering topics as SSS or render passes, but you can be sure that soon we’ll release more advanced tutorials about it ! Stay tuned.
