In this 3D Studio Max video tutorial split in two parts, we’ll take a look on how we can simulate the interaction between a boat mesh and a water plane, creating the waves, ripples and particle splashes. We start on the 1st tutorial talking about Reactor rigid body
and water dynamic, and a base particle setup done with Particle Flow, in the 2nd part we’ll finalize the setup with an animated boat mesh and we’ll see how to approach to rendering of the particles.

Hi Massimo, there was no Part 2 for this tutorial due to the Autodesk decision to remove Reactor from 3ds max. I just started a new tutorial series aboout water / ocean and object interaction and it will cover a lot of topics it will start to be released by tomorrow. Thanks

    Hi
    Very informative tutorial.
I have been following carefully though at 29 minutes you add a display node to the collision spawn in the particle view window. This results in the particles deflecting from the water plane. Before you do this @ 8.30 it doesn’t work . My file that i have generated does not deflect the particles somewhat like you have at 8.30 even after adding the display node. I cant get it to work would you have any idea why? I am using max 2009, i tried in max 2011 as well with no result. I am 99% sure that i have followed your tutorial exactly as explained. I can upload the file for you to have a look at if you have time.
    thanks

I’m actually working on a marina and creating movement with the boat using particles would come really handy :p

    Thanks for replying.
