Hello everyone and if you have been wondering where have all the recent tutorials and posts been lately? Well I am here to explain what is going on with the site!

Eat Sheep was a tremendous effort on all of our parts here at the studio. For the past month I have been working hard to finish the Eat Sheep Art & Production book which will be out this fall! I was then asked to draw a few production pieces for Jonathan’s upcoming workshops. These have all been a distraction from my work on the site.  However, this doesn’t mean that the site hasn’t been on my mind everyday and there have been so many ideas brewing in my head of where I’ve been wanting to take the site for quite a while now.

Well the time to grow and expand is now!

The next few weeks I will be spending each day working on the new features and tutorials for the site. I am so excited to show you guys what is coming, but I ask that you be patient for a couple more weeks. I will keep you all updated on the progress on our facebook page, and look forward to knowing that a newer and greater Concept Cookie is in progress :D

During this process I ask for suggestions, not only for tutorials, but what do you what and like to see from a concept art site? Is it more references, brushes, concept references, photo reference, anatomy, contests, worksheets, monthly updates with contests, forums, etc. You name it. We are looking to make this site a great resource for a digital artist to feel comfortable knowing that whatever they need can be provided on the site!

As a beginner i love learning concept art; however complex pieces, such as the above, strike me as being a puzzle of colours, shapes and patterns. I would dearly love some beginner books/series to get me on my way to advance in the artistic world of art.

    - Thanks in advance, Loving the site!

The best beginner books that I have found are ones that don’t even particular focus on digital art. The best book I have found is one called, “Color and Light” by James Gurney. Art books from movies, and videogames can inspire and offer great reference and insight into the concept work behind the final product. ImagineFX is always useful for tips, reference, digital art knowledge, and they inspire me with each installment. Lastly, you can never go wrong with an anatomy book, always useful for a character concept artist to learn from!

I though there was a beginner series mentioned at some point? (http://cgcookie.com/concept/2012/06/01/concept-cookie-update-june/)
I hope that that is still being developed; a series that would go through all the basics needed to get into texturing/painting/concept art would be a great start.

We decided to re-work this section as I started it. Instead I am going to include more resources and worksheets to include along side the tutorials to help those just beginning to learn digital art be able to practice and grow as a digital artist :)

Agreed! I am working to include monthly challenges as well and be able to moderate them so that I can be able to provide insight on the progress shown by the community and help with critiquing.

Lots more detailed anatomy lessons please. ;-) love looking at all the tutorials on CC but anatomy lessons are always useful.. would love some comparative animal anatomy lessons too.

I have been gathering as much anatomy reference over the last few years as i can. the aim is to make the ultimate open source anatomy reference material. Anyone else interested. Any experts ready to give feed back and crits ?

Anatomy is set for my schedule all of next week, I will provide anatomy sheets for the legs, arms, torso, back, and head. I want to include a .PSD of each that includes a bone structure layer, muscle layers, and a skin layer so that you guys are able to turn off and on the layer you would like to see for reference. I also am working to include a combination of anatomy structures in different poses and show them in more poses and different angles.

I’d like to see more ‘color theory’ tutorials. I mean, I’d like to see tutorials which shows how to make metal look like actual metal(shiny and new, scrap and old, etc) leather like leather and so on. How various day/night time lights affects objects (smoothness of light and/or shadow on objects, when shadows needs to be hard when soft, etc..) and how to recreate that in digital painting. I know it may seem a bit boring topics for tutorials, but if putted together with a demo (lets say painting hard surface vehicle in some sort of light) and talking about things I mentioned could work. Also those weekly or monthly challenges/exercises sounds great.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have been holding off on a color tutorial for too long, it’s about time I get into doing one! And the monthly challenges are a must in my opinion.

More brushes and ways to use them. Also, I agree, more lessons on anatomy would be awesome!

I think content that focuses on all aspects of Concept Artistry would be great because there’s always room for improvement in all areas. At least in my case anyway. And thanks for all you’re doing.

Anyone looking for a great reference on Anatomy, Jonathan Williamson has recomened “Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist” by Stephen Rogers Peck on more than one occasion. It is a very inexpensive book and I have found it very useful. I purchased it from Amazon for as little as 12.00 USD and is still used by many Universities as a suggested text book.

I personally would like to see some more character creation tutorials for GIMP.
It seems like you guys aren’t putting out that interesting of tutorials, I mean come on “dotted dash tutorial”! And also you haven’t even touched GIMP ever since February. So please put out some more GIMP tutorials and don’t put out things like “dotted dash” as I said I would like to see way more tutorials for character creation in GIMP.
    Thanks-Ben.

    Hi,

I’m new to “Concept Cookie” but a regular visitor to “Blender Cookie”. I’m seeing a fundamentals section which says coming soon, I would like to see a series of tutorials that takes a beginner to an intermediate. I have seen people who has gone for art schools draw with ease with some basic techniques. I would like to know them in these tutorials. Mostly I’m a self taught so not much aware of these fundamentals of how to see and draw an object to make it easier or how to draw from memory and so on. Hope you understand what I’m trying to say. :)

Yeah i believe I do, with concept art it’s a bit tougher teaching it since there is so much fundamental traditional work that could be done beforehand. So I’ve decided to split this into two sections: The Fundamental Series will go through learning value, form, color, lighting, anatomy, etc while The Getting Started Series will focus on learning how to use a tablet, Photoshop and getting started in digital art.

Hey there, so most all digital art these days are done with a tablet rather than a mouse. There are many kinds of tablets out there and I currently use a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. This makes the digital art process much, much easier!

I’d like to see, and let me know if it’s practical, but a series of tutorials for people attempting to learn how to draw landscapes and backgrounds.

By the way, awesome site. I hope to take advantage of the benefits of becoming a cgcookie citizen as soon as I get some more scrilla.

I think I’ve read every free article/tutorial on ConceptCookie passively, just got around to making an account and will upgrade to citizen soon. This site has helped me as a new game design student SO much! Thanks. Personally, I myself could benefit from a tut. on how to make skin look more like, well skin. I can’t seem to get the slight poor texture down and my faces look freckled or dirty.
And on a note more or less directed to the whole Cookie team: Bringing in a Maya dude wouldn’t be a bad idea. Even though I’m guessing a pretty good amount of readers are probably ammature theres a 3dMaxcookie site and I can’t find a decent Maya community any where near the level of cgcookie!!! :)

Thank you! I’m glad the site has proven to be a helpful resource for you and I would be more than happy to create another skin tutorial on creating skin that actually feels like skin! As for Maya, it was something that we talked about and while it could happen in the future we are currently focusing in on the sites we already have established since we only have 3 people in house for the entire CG Cookie network ;)

Tim have you ever used Corel Painter 12 for paintings. I recently bought it and was searching for tutorials. It will be good to see if you can do tutorials and reviews on other digital painting software like Painter, Sketchbook pro and Artrage.

Your work on this website is nothing less than amazing. Great job.

Yeah I love coral painter, it took me quite a lot of experimenting with all the different brushes and the settings you can use. I am no expert with Coral but I agree that it is a great digital art software that takes advantage of using traditional style looking finishes!
