Hello and welcome to the Drawing a Creature series. In this part Tim Von Rueden takes a look at going through the process of creating 10 creature silhouettes. This is all done with a hard edged brush using black and white to build shape and values.

↓ Below is a quick step by step on what the tutorial covers ↓

http://www.seventhsanctum.com/ - Here is the website for the random name generator

1 – Using solely the hard edged brush I take a look at creating shapes and values through black and white

2 – I continued to use this process for the rest of the creatures

3 – Once I finished the sketches I added a quick color gradient with a shadow to ground them a bit more

I was thinking I would take three and give a 15 minute pass on each, and then choose one to fully render out.

    Thanks Tim,

You hooked me on another series. I have been a Si-Fi geek since I was a kid & hooked on D&D RPG’s since the 60′s. Anything having to do with Lizardmen & such creatures definitly perks my interest. Never thought it was possible that I would one day be able to bring some of those creatures to life. You are beginning to make me believe that between using Blender for the modeling & using the techniques you are teaching it might be possible to bring my imagination to life after all.

Keep the tutorials coming. I need all the practice I can get.

Thanks for the tutorial, i really like to draw silhouettes.
I know a great tool were you can get awesome ideas from as well, its called “Alchemy” and draws mainly with stored shapes and the results are really good.
If you want to try it out(if you don’t have already)take a look at: al.chemy.org

I love alchemy, it takes that control factor away from me which is great since I over-analyze my pieces, Jonathan Williamson is actually going to be doing a tutorial on getting started with Alchemy sometime in the near future.

Very nice tutorial. You make this look easy. I have this A5 Wacom tablet but it seems to be too small. You never seem to have to zoom in to do art.
This video was great, i cant wait for part 2, but it kind of needs the shortcuts to learn faster :) .

Thanks man! I actually prefer the smaller sized tablets to the larger ones, I feel you don’t have to move around as much and lets me focus on specific areas without having to move my hand too much. But that is all personal preference. Part 2 is coming very soon, check back next week!
