Drawing a Pumpkin in Gimp

In this Gimp tutorial we are keeping the fall spirit in mind and taking a look at creating some pumpkins. The first pumpkin is set in the day and the second is carved out as a jack-o-lantern for the night.

im a fan of using multiple layers also, there is this well known caracturist who uses photoshop, and boy does he use a lot of layers. its a tool like any else. you can over use it, but not if your making awesomeness with it….

Thank you for the over-layering support :) I’m sure if i tried to cut back on them, I could easily cut out 1/4 no problem.

Also, in your beginner tutorials, I think you should be explaining the software just a little bit more. For instance the parameters of the tools, the blend modes and maybe the hot keys(if you use default). That, followed with a quick example which you could demonstrate and then undo real quick and continue. I think this would really help a lot of the people struggling to learn digital concept art.

Thanks man! Yeah i could do more of that, it’s funny because I’m still learning Gimp too so I’m not all that familiar with all the hotkeys yet, but almost ;)

Great tutorial Tim, I really enjoyed it. Just a quick tip on masking in Gimp, instead of selecting the background and inverting your selection, you can right click on the layer you want to use as your mask and choose ‘Alpha to selection’ to select anything that is not alpha. Thanks again for the tutorial :)

I was going to mention that also. Do you know if it is possible to save the mask out as a channel for easy reuse? I know you can do it with selections – I imagine it is possible for mask as well.

Definitely. Select everything that you want to use as the mask, then go to the channel property dialog and create a new channel, in the ‘New channel’ dialog check the ‘Initialize from selection’ option. then just turn off that channels visibility and you can reuse it as a template in the ‘Add layer mask’ dialog under ‘Channel’. Hope this helps :)

Hi Tim! Why are you working in RGB and not in CMYK mode? I know that colours are way more vibrant in RGB, but if you make your artwork for printing and you convert it from RGB to CMYK you are going to loose some colour depth. Maybe you just put it to RGB for tutorial reasons? =) Just a question, I’m curious.

As far as I know Gimp doesn’t support CMYK mode yet. Definitely one of it’s biggest drawbacks. I haven’t kept up on the development much lately but I though they were aiming to have it in 2.7, but don’t quote me on that one.

mine is just all solid an more gimp tutorials please

Okay that could be one of two things.

The short path: In Gimp, under your paintbrush settings, roll out the brush dynamics menu and make sure the opacity and the hardness of your brush is actually checked.

The long path: If it has to do with your tablet then it could be a few things. One, make sure your tablet is installed correctly first, like making sure you have the right drivers and everything. Secondly under the tablet settings (on both mac or pc) make sure it was installed correctly there. Then go ahead and try it again.

If neither of these work let me know!

How do you get the second window on the right that shows the layers? I’m new, don’t judge me.

    Hello CGCookie,
My name is Thomas and I am trying to create my own pumpkin but in photoshop. (I know this video is old but on the off chance someone can help me…) I was good following up until the point where the galaxy brushes were used, since those aren’t brushes in photoshop and I couldn’t re-create the brush to look as good, I was wondering if someone knew how to fix this problem.

    Thank you for reading,
    Thomas Hardy
