In this Gimp tutorial we look at how to create an eye using grayscale to build up the values using two of the pre-set brushes and finish it off with some color using overlay layers.

    Thanks Tim,

Do most of my stuff in PS CS and PSE 9, but am trying to learn Gimp because I bought the Blenderella DVD and Angela does all of her work in Gimp (as do several others). Was able to follower her and duplicate in CS but would be easier if I had a working knowledge of Gimp. Your tutorials will help me with that.

    Thanks,
    OldMan44

Great tutorial, with some good tips. Only things that are missing are the little capillary veins in the eye itself.

Good tutorial. I think you used too many layers but that is a personal preference anyway. To get some randomize as well you can click the Apply Jitter check-box and adjust the slider. That will scatter the brush. Try it with the smudge tool for some interesting effects! Some useful shortcuts for painting are:

    O: Color Picker
    P: Paintbrush
    [ ]: Adjust Brush Size

I also mapped Flip Canvas to the I key which is conveniently right next to those other four buttons. I does the same thing in Mypaint so I am used to that and it was mapped to some tool I never use anyways. Hope that helps!

Hey thanks for the tips! The more tricks I figure out in Gimp, the more tutorials in it I can make.

I’m glad I could help. You use liquify often in your PS tutorials so you might like IWarp. It is under Filters > Distort. I don’t know how much it differs from liquify but it is that same basic concept of being able to push and pull the image around.

I’m not sure if you know that already but Shift-Clicking on the add layer button will automatically create it using the last used settings !
I’m wondering if you are using a tablet? because using only my mouse for those kind of things make it looks impossible !

GIMP tutorials are appreciated. I’d like to mention couple of things though (for others at least).

MyPaint is made for this kind of work and GIMP Paint Studio might also be worth checking out.

Development version (2.7.3) of GIMP adds single window mode option, layer grouping and image tabs if you must have those. Not production ready! If you use it, save often. I’ve had 1 crash so far, not that big of a deal but still.

Also, GIMP is a different beast to work with if you maximize the image-window and show/hide the docks with tab-key. That works in both window modes if you have the dev version of GIMP.

Hello, I’m new to GIMP and really appreciated for the GIMP tutorials!
I’ve been following this tutorial and using the same settings.
Otherwise I can’t get the same softer brush effect as in this video.
Is this because you are using pen tablet?
Is it impossible to draw like that(not changing opacity and brush size) using mouse? Sorry for the newbie question.

  25. One question > Is there an option to rotate the canvas in GIMP? (Like in MyPaint for example).. I would appreciate it, since that way, you can draw naturally, like you would rotate the paper if you draw on it.
