We have been talking about this site for what seems like over a year already, but we finally have the right pieces and right people involved to kick it out of the nest…!

Concept Cookie has a time slot:

This Friday Concept Cookie will be going live on the network with some fresh content and some fantastic new features to the CG Cookie network in tow. As we make sure the site is full of gas before we launch, we just opened up Concept Cookie’s Facebook page to get ready for the pre-launch online party. ;)

Why are we telling you this now?

During the launch of the new site, we will be pulling down all the sites to push over the new gallery feature that is detailed below. We don’t want too many of you taken off guard, but of course we will have the tinychat.com/cgcookie live stream of the office going. :)

All new likes of the Concept Cookie page receive a free skin brush set for photoshop.

We also created a Facebook Event for the launch.

Be sure to join us this Friday on http://tinychat.com/cgcookie to see live streaming of the office during launch, our overly tired faces and us consuming a lot of coffee. You may even see a chest bump after the site goes live, or stupid office tricks.

What will Concept Cookie be covering?

The main focus of Concept cookie is to provide video education covering the basics and advanced topics of conceptual art and problem solving. We are going to be introducing Timelapse videos to watch, downloadable brush packs and some great interviews are also lined up. Below is a glimpse at some of the roughly scheduled tutorial:

  1. Creating an Environment in GIMP
  2. Working with One, Two and Three Point Perspective
  3. Painting an Eye in GIMP
  4. Drawing and Painting a Character in Photoshop
  5. Creating Skin Brushes for Photoshop
  6. Character Painting Time-lapse

Looking for Concept Instructors

With a new site we are looking for some well motivated concept art instructors. If you are interested we have our application here.

Upcoming feature: Gallery Update.

It wasn’t long after we launched the new 3.0 site that we started to see a flood of images being submitted on tutorials. Admittedly some of these were not related to the tutorial, but we sensed that artists wanted a place to show off what the software can do, and spread it around.

So, a few weeks later, some late nights and dancing with a bit of logic. We are please to announce the new “Network Gallery” feature to Cg Cookie. I won’t speak on it too much, but we do have an overview video on our Facebook page.. Muahah very sneaky on the marketing ploy I know.. But give it a look and we think you will like it. Of course if you don’t like it, instead of cursing at us, shoot us a note via support(at)cgcookie.com on how we can improve it or other features to add. I assure you the functionality of the site and this particular feature will continue to grow as the site does.. enabled by you.

Wait.. aren’t you guys pretty darn swamped with the existing sites and studio?

Answer: @#$@# yes.

Wes and Jonathan are hoping to see their families soon. So this is why we brought on Tim Von Rueden as the Site Lead for Concept Cookie. Tim will be heading up the main site, comments, posts and making sure some sexy Conception is happening. ;)

So hope you enjoy the new addition to the family and look forward to seeing you guys on Tiny Chat this Friday.

And hence, on the CG Cookie network, the Photoshop vs. GIMP battle begins.

‘we started to see a flood of images being submitted on tutorials. Admittedly some of these were not related to the tutorial’ I think that may be my fault on the Maxcookie side of things lol. But hey its a great site and I’m glad its going to have its own gallery option :) nice one Wes!

Great, do I have to like the face book page to get it, once you have a pack ready?

There is a way of converting to gimp. I will source the tutorial and post it for you to view. The foundation for the tutorial is the use of an abr brush viewer. I will get back to you on that one.

There is a link to a conversion tutorial near the bottom of the page. Many may find this very useful, I hope it helps.

This is actually a great idea. I’ve always used other people’s concept art when making models with blender, but I’m looking forward to learn how to make that concept art myself in the near future.

Gotta request some really basic stuff. To get more comfortable with my tablet and with Gimp, and the basics of digital art. But with the basic stuff you’ve done with Blender, I’m confident and excited to see what you do!

When I was first picking up blender to pursue my passions, blender cookie was there! Almost every day since I’ve been checking for new tutorials, seeking to further my knowledge in this field I love so much. Recently I started fooling around in GIMP and other similar programs, it seems like fate that you guys would swoop in and once again astound me by bringing me education for my passion. I am so grateful for what your sites have done for me, I can’t wait for Concept Cookie :D !

The concept art is something that I was waiting for! Good job! Are you thinking to add tutorials about Adobe Illustrator?

    #16 Oct 6, 2011 at 3:34 am
    • It’s possible but probably not. There are already a huge number of resources out there for Illustrator and it’s not quite what we’re looking to cover. We are more focused on the drawing and painting side of concept art.

This sounds great, however I hope it dosen’t become Adobe Cookie. There is already a lot of PS content out there. It would be great to see more focus on open-source alternatives.

    #17 Oct 6, 2011 at 4:29 am
    • Most definitely not! We are looking to cover any and all painting/drawing applications. Our hope is for it to be non-application specific and to cover a lot of different grounds. Some of the immediate ones we’ll be covering are GIMP, Alchemy, Photoshop, Pixelmator and MyPaint.

;) Sounds fantastic, cant wait to see the Alchemy tutorials. That is a brilliant, if somewhat unusual piece of software.

I use Paint shop Pro, so will start seeing what I can dream up for those that use it. Not the greatest artist in the world but I am sure I can make some tutorials so users can integrate that software with blender.

For those that use Gimp open source, this page may be of use for converting photo shop brushes to work in Gimp. My software of choice is Paint shop Pro but Gimp is probably the Best open source paint program around.
