Tests done with Blender’s smoke simulator, internal render and compositing (gimp was used for the image).
You can the animated result here :

The smoke resolution is set to 64 (division), with high resolution set to 3.
A little more than an hour to bake, 4 to 5 hours to render the whole video.

I love this animation; it’s a wonderful sight, especially since you made it in Blender.

However, I don’t think you should make a tutorial on this. And just let the animation stand on its own. Unless you feel more compelled to help people understand it, and not forced into it.

Again, love it. The fire tornado was surreal. Can’t wait to see more.

Really great animation, Tom. By the way, the other stuff you have on Youtube is also really awesome. The hover car is funny and well made. How did I miss you in the community until now?!

This is amazing!!!!! I’ve always wanted to know how to make a tornado in Blender. My attempt was poor, to say the least. Could you please do a tutorial? This is by far the best animation done with blender internal! And I saw Sintel and Big Buck Bunny!!!!!!!!!!!

I really want to produce awesome stuff like that but my pc can support that. Please do a tutorial anyways and keep doing the wonderful work and prove that blender is not less than any other software.

    Hey everyone,

TomWalks was kind enough to produce a two part tutorial on this incredible tornado! Part 01 is live now: http://cgcookie.com/blender/2012/05/02/creating-a-tornado-in-blender-with-particles-and-the-smoke-simulator/
