I can create objects with the spin tool just fine but when I set the objects to smooth, the shading goes haywire. How do I fix this?

you have wierd normals. In edit mode, select the entire object and then press Ctrl+N(for PC users) if you’re on a mac, then open up the operators panle, the left one in the viewport, and scroll down until you find recalculate normals.

    Hope that helps!

also on your tool bar tab you can recalculate or
    flip directions.
Under Properties panel in edit mode you can turn
on faces or vetex and then you can see whats going on
with them for recalculating or flipping to suit your needs.
Also if you ever run into a problem where that CTRL N won’t
fix them, just add a edge split modifier for 30-60 and that
should correct the problem for windows users like me.
    Looking good, happy blendering..
