Blender for base mesh and sculpting. Blender was also used for projection painting. Some touch ups were done in Photoshop. There may have been too much AO added to the sculpt render, maybe I’ll upload a better one. I have some random 2d and 3d wips and such at: http://bwcreation.blogspot.com/

Skin and the head it self are quite realistic, but the eyes may need some work
and add some more rimlight
It would be nice to see a model without a texture because it’s hard to judge where is geometry and where is just a color from projection
WOW!!! thats impressive! did you project paint it or is it hand painted?
Thanks for the comments guys! The eyes are definitely lacking. This was just a quick bust study with a free pack of reference images from 3D.sk that BlenderCookie provided.
@VirNorin: There’s too much added AO in the first image, but that is a render without any texture.
@Johnsmith: It’s a combination of projection painting and texture painting inside Blender. I also did a little touch up in Photoshop.
I would post my texture work but it’s a little embarrassing haha.
Dang that looks crazy. Nice modeling and texturing man. The ear lobes seem a little off to me but I havent studied old man ears.
The wrinkles came out good and the sagging of the face too. cya
Thanks Jeremiah! The lobes are for sure off, not in the sculpt but in the texture. It was something I couldn’t figure out how to touch up in PhotoShop. Tried to fix it in texture paint mode, but I couldn’t get anything better then this result. For just an exercise this was as far as I was going to take it.
I see that the left model is without a texture, but it’s in a flat- view. Show it in a shaded mode, because with projected phototexture even a very low-poly model can look photo-realistic just because all data comes from projection

Personally I don’t think it matters where the data is coming from if you get the results you are after. Even mapping a phototexture on a face convincingly is tough to pull off. It takes a lot of knowledge of the processes involved and a lot of anatomy knowledge as well. I’ve seen a lot of models where they just slapped the photos on there to get the results, but that doesn’t look to be the case with this one. I think he(or she) did a hell of a job with whatever methods he used.
@Jabesette25: Hey thanks man! You can view some screen shots of the actual sculpt at this link: http://cgcookie.com/blender/images/sculpt/
