This is a Lake scene that I believe I botched but not completely dissatisfied with the results. Part of a nature tutorial for Blender.
Criticisms welcome, I appreciate any feedback.

It looks like you had the same troubles as me on this tutorial, I think the way to fix the grass rotation is to use blender 2.58, which you can get from Blender.org.
I also had very weird issues with the mirror material on the water, but I see yours came out ok, strange.
Which version of Blender did you use?

I used the latest version 2.63. See my follow up response if you are interested in the roadblocks I hit. I’d be interested in knowing if you found the same troubles.

Honestly, I think it looks great. Especially the grass and water. If anything, I would say those lilypads look too shiny. Of course, I’m assuming they’re supposed to be lilypads, and not some liquid green goop, in which case the glossiness makes sense.

Also, the dark streak (shadows I assume) on the water at the bottom of the image (closest to the camera) makes the water look like it kinda stops or drops off. I assume it’s a result of your environment map, so if you just tweak it a bit to break up the shadows there, it would look better.
But yeah, those are kinda small things. Could always be worse. Still looks very nice! :)

I would raise the resolution of the grass, in a couple spots I can see flat edges instead of smooth curves. Also again, the lily pads I assume are way too glossy. And also the background image is too blury for the scene, it’s unrealistic that it is defined for the modeled scene, and then suddenly blury for the background.

I really appreciate the feedback. I’m somewhat new at this and the best way to get the better is to solicit responses from the user community. Here were some of the issues I had during the tutorial that I believe made my results less than stellar:

    1. Moving to different layers for some reason had the default grid appearing miles away. (like 100 or more as opposed to say 2) I was unable to get a close up on the grid. Any advice to fix this condition would be a big help in the future.
    2. Similar circumstance in some instances it seems like I am rotating or moving the “world” by default as opposed to the item I am modeling. Any advice to fix this condition would be a big help in the future.
    3. Some of the items in the image were supposed to be pre-packaged in with the tutorial and when modeling the lake, I found that all of the items I needed were missing. Such as reeds and grass etc.
So the solutions I came up with was to model the items I needed in a separate blend and append them accordingly. I had to play around with size and color because it seem my hands were tied on the rest. In the end I did not want to give up on it, I felt I still got something out of it. Thanks again for all of your feedback, it’s a great help.
