JW,
Downloaded the video but can’t find the reference photos. Can you help. Thanks.
Zero
Hello, thanks for the tutorial.
Like Zero, I can’t find the reference images.
Hey Shiftplus..
Go here and download the ones you need: http://kxhara.deviantart.com/art/Head-Turnaround-Front-to-Side-301017188.

Zero

JW,
Why is it that when I add a circle for the nose it comes up as a mirrored object and yours didn’t seem to? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks as always,
Zero
PS….I’m in 2.64
Duh….never mind. I should have added the circle in object mode. Man…it’s tough being a novice y’know?
Nope…that didn’t do it either. Because the circle is added as a mirrored object, I’m getting weird topology when I go into side view and pull vertices back to form the basic nose ‘face’ shape. The mirrored ring stays in place while the main ring moves as intended. This is completely frustrating and I’m sure it’s just some rookie mistake I must be making or an incomplete understanding. Your help would be most appreciated.
Citizenly yours,
Zero
Hi Zero,
So sorry for the late reply here. If you’re still having trouble with the circle could you possibly upload a screenshot showcasing the problem? I’ll be happy to help any way that I can but I don’t currently follow the problem.
Cheers,
Jonathan
I have a quick question, can one use the face loop technique from the first part of the tutorial for the rest of the female body?
Yep, the idea of these techniques is that you will learn them and learn how to use and manipulate them throughout anything you create
-Alex
Does this method also work with male heads. if so is there anyway i can do the tutorial but at the end tweek it to give it a more masculine shape
@Agr8golfa
Yes it does, the topology of a male head vs female head is identical, just tweak the form.
-Alex
Sure you guys are really busy so just a friendly bump asking if you could upload the references.
Zero gave a useful link but it’s always nice to work with exactly what you’re working with so it’s easier to follow along.
Thanks.
Hi there,
Sorry for the delay on this. I’m working to dig up the references right now. I’ll try and get the post updated shortly.
Cheers,
Jonathan
Hey guys – apologize for the delay and source files are up!
this is an amazing site. great job on the tuturial
Jonathan,
Thanks so much for your instruction here. It took about 8 tries, but going step by step with you, and then going at it by myself, I’m finally getting a clean uncluttered face mesh going. Sculpting I’m not taking on yet until I get a tablet. Had an older one from when I was first learning Photoshop and then found Blender, but it would not work on my newer Win7 machine. The ear has been a real bear. What about doing it completely separate from the head and adding it later? everything gets in the way and it became very confusing..
A warm Thanksgiving to you and everybody at Cookie. Keep up the great work.
Been looking for a solid technique for modeling heads with good topology, and I do believe I’ve found it. Had to go through the videos a few times, but overall I think this fits me very well, thxs for it. Anyone having trouble with form google is your friend.
wouldn’t the 5 pole at the inside of the brows be bad for animation? . . . asks the noob
It’s at the edge of the brow so it’s fine, 5 pointers are usually fine, it’s six pointers you need to watch out for
-Alex
thanks for the response Alex!
I’m guessing it’s okay to go ahead and use the distributed references when I segue this into the ‘realistic head’ tutorial?
(I was born with an inconveniently zealous attitude towards copyright legalese).
As always, great stuff! Really enjoyed it.
How do you bring hidden objects out of hiding?
You can unhide objects with ALT+H.
thx
Hi JW,
I’m having trouble after I add the pores, that works fine. But when I switch to the wrinkles for some reason the pores still comes out instead. Help a newb.
Have you changed out the texture of the brush?
in the tools panel or properties/ texture panel? not sure where. 2.5 is different than the new patch.
i did click on the brush however its not working. for the pores the picture did not display in the preview but it still worked for pores. im still not getting the preview picture for any of the 3 wrinkles at all, needless to say they not working either.
Hi Wes. Congratulations for the great tutorial. But if you pardon me, the videos 1 to 4 are great… but.. the part 5… I think you messed up with everything you did before. You spent so much time doing nothing and reshaping the lower lip, and at the end, you didnt match the photo profile of that girl, as many other poly-by-poly’s tutorials. I think that the Sculpt part of the tutorial (part 5) should maybe be re-done, cos it was a make-unmake-remake show and the final result was a random face. Please, I would really like to see a tuto of making a female face that ended really similar to the photo used. Thank you, Wes.
Hi Anderson,
Thank you for the feedback! As this series is starting to show it’s age I hope to revisit it soon. When I am able to revisit it I will definitely be very focused on creating a more realistic result that better matches the photo reference and such.
Keep in mind, regardless of how accurate the final result is to the photo reference, the important part is the techniques and workflows shown. So long as you build up a foundation of skills and techniques then you can model any head/face you wish.
Cheers,
Jonathan
Hi there, just a quick concern, when you went into the user preference, and enable the threaded sculpt setting (sixth video), is it by default turn “on”, on the newer versions of blender? I cant find it (blender 2.66)
It is in the sculpt brush ‘options’ tab
-Alex
Hi, I am following this tutorial, and at the end of part 2 you say I should mirror the eyes.
But when I try to mirror it, the mirror goes to a weird place, not being mirrored along the x axis..
Here’s a screenshot: http://imgur.com/KflcQlx
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong…?
Hi Cindy,
The mirror modifier uses the object origin (the small orange dot) as the center point for the mirror. What you need to do is reposition this origin by placing the 3D cursor at the center point of where you want to mirror the object, and then press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+C > Origin to 3D Cursor. You can also find “Origin” in the Object Tools section of the toolbar (T).
That was quick! Thanks, this solved it, thanks a lot
Am I the only one missing the blend file for part4?
I also don’t see one for part2
I’ve been running into a slight problem with the topology and not sure what’s happening. I’ve tried multiple times to clean it up, but I’ve been unable to find the culprit.
I’ve selected all -> Remove doubles and 0 were removed.
deleted the verts, extruded and reconnected with the same end problem.
Suggestions would be appreciated.
