Learn all the theories, fundamentals, and techniques you need to master subdivision surface modeling - starts September 17th

Final registrations for the CG Cookie Blender Modeling Workshop is now open! This workshop on Mastering Modeling in Blender has been developed over the past two years to provide an unparalleled education platform  to learn mesh modeling with subdivision surfaces in Blender.

Registration Period September 5th – 9th

Learn the skills needed to create any kind of model

This CG Cookie workshop is intended to provide an in-depth study of the key theories, fundamentals, and techniques you need to know about subdivision surface modeling. This course makes use of Blender but the majority of the material is applicable to any software that supports subdivision surface modeling. This course covers all the fundamentals that are vital to modeling, including topology, subdivision surfaces, organic modeling, hard-surface modeling, sculpting, low polygon modeling, and more.

All material is presented as video lessons in the form of lectures, fundamental skill-sets, and practical tutorials that are available for either streaming or download on a week-by-week basis. Students are also assigned a weekly exercise which is due at the end of each week. These lessons are supplemented by weekly, live Q/As, and personal instructor reviews of student exercises for Premiere students. Basic students will submit exercises for review by their peers in the workshop forum. All necessary, and additional resources will be provided each week.

Workshop weekly breakdown

View the Complete Workshop Outline

The Mastering Modeling in Blender workshop is broken down into four to five weeks (depending on access level), plus a set of additional resources and beginner guides for users that wish to start at the absolute beginning

STARTERS PACK: RESOURCES FOR GETTING STARTED – Starts September 10th

This collection of resources is intended as a means for even the newest user to get up and running in preparation for the workshop. These resources cover many of the key fundamentals and basics that every 3D modeler should know.

WEEK 1 – FOCUSING ON TOPOLOGY - Starts September 17th

The first week of this Mastering Modeling workshop is focused exclusively on topology. Topology is the underlying concept and structure that affects everything we do in modeling. By understanding topology, we can not only better understand the modeling process but we can also vastly improve our modeling.

WEEK 2 – POLY MODELING INTENSIVE

The second week of this workshops is an intensive focus on poly modeling. The goal is to apply all of the topology fundamentals and theory we learned in the first week to an actual workflow by modeling several different subjects while using different modeling techniques

WEEK 3 – SCULPTING

The third week of this workshop moves the focus to sculpting. This week will introduce the student to the basics of sculpting, explain why sculpting is such a powerful tool and walk the student through the complete sculpting workflow.

Week break for Blender Conference – OCT 8th – 12th

WEEK 4 – RETOPOLOGY

The fourth week of this workshop moves on to look at retopology. The retopology process is used to create an animation friendly model from a high resolution, sculpted model.

PREMIERE BONUS WEEK 5 – STUDENT FOCUS

This final week is exclusive to premiere students and gives them the opportunity to choose an area of focus and apply all they have learned throughout the rest of the workshop to a real project. Throughout the week the instructor will be available to answer questions, critique models and provide direction on the students projects.

Will you be doing this again, or do you plan on making a tutorial like this for Blender Cookie or CG cookie citizens?

Just registered, once I entered the “Student Hub” I could hardly contain my excitement. I haven’t been part of any sort of “Educational” environment for a few years now.

I’m really looking forward to being part of this.

    hey :)
i’m kind of curious how the fifth week will be.
because we can pick an area we like, so it is impossible to make tutorial videos for each and every request.
Are we going to get assignments, or is it more like us asking question which you will then answer for us or..?
and will we be able to see other peoples requests and answers on a different area?
I’m sorry for the lack of patiences but when people are realy exited of what is to come we cannot hide it :)

The fifth week will be a bit fluid, depending on the student. It will involve a lot of back and forth critique sessions, suggestions, personal video tutorials, etc. The goal is to cater it specifically to each persons needs.

Being excited is a good thing! :)

If one doesn’t purchase either of the two registration levels, am I correct in understanding that even if one is a Citizen Member, there is is no access to the recordings even after the workshop is over?

      Hi Jason,

That’s correct. The workshop is a complete course, separate from the Citizen program. Workshop members will have continued access to all course material even after the workshop completes, though.

Yep! There’s going to several additional videos, including Modeling for Production, Low Poly Modeling for Games, and likely others.

The one-on-one advise will also be in the form of many personally recorded videos for each person as needed, along with direct communication throughout the entire workshop. Premiere students have an private forum for more direct advice and discussion for support during the workshop.

Registered and geared up! Wasn’t sure how much I needed this course, so I challenged myself with a complex hard surface model … and realized how badly I needed this course! Really need to fill in the gaps in my hard surface modeling as well as take the rest of my modeling to the next level. Looking forward to doing a lot of sculpting and retopo work too … definitely time to give my 3D modeling a boost! Would not want to miss out on something you guys have been planning for 3 years ;)

I apologize for not being able to attend this. I love modeling and this would be so cool. I am just too busy and I don’t quite have the funds at this point. I hear you will do this again . . . if so I’d like to do it then. Hopefully, Jonathan will be able to make the course even better after having taught it once. If so, then the wait would be worth it. Just know that I am so jealous of everyone registered and participating.

No apologies necessary! I’ll be glad to have you next time around. I’m really looking forward to this first run of the workshop but I’m looking forward to the second run even more when we’ll be able to implement many improvements and additions.

      Cheers,
      Jonathan

Well I squeaked in at the last minute.
Almost didn’t bite since the trailer wasn’t exactly awe inspiring like the NA’s trailer but what you have to offer in skill level is with out question worth a look.

I watched your welcome video already it sounds like it’s going to be a good time. You should be careful though you almost looked into the camera a couple of times :)

Uh oh, you caught me! Ha I’m trying to get better at that, I just tend to look around when I’m thinking about what to say.

Thanks for joining, I’m glad to have you! The Nature Academy trailer was definitely great! These two workshops are really very different things, this one is focused much more on the underlying knowledge than the specific results. We certainly want to blow some minds with the modeling, but truly learning how to model is our first priority to teach :)

      Cheers,
      Jonathan

Sorry to put you on the spot like that but eye contact is crucial to the position you have chosen.

A tip I use is I spend some time convincing myself that know one is going to see the finished product unless I want them too. Nobody has to see the takes you don’t like and the delete key is your friend.

Hey Jonathan, So I’m very interested in this workshop, but I have a busy period at my job at the moment and I’m not sure I can follow this workshop in “real-time”. Can you sign up and go in your own pace? Will there be a bundle you can buy later?.

You sure can! All the content will be available for a minimum of two years after signing up. Thus you can go through at any pace you choose. Please do note you may miss out on the live Q/A sessions.

      I hope that helps!

    JW,

Will this series be available in, say, four or five weeks for we citizens that just don’t have the time right now? I guess what I’m asking is…can I buy the information itself contained in the four week package at a later date sans the live feedback?

    Thanks. Just busy.

      Hi Zero,

The workshop won’t be released as a separate download. However, if you register you can actually go through the workshop content at any time. All of the content will be available for a minimum of two years, including the workshop discussion forum, resources, etc. It’s not actually required to be in attendance right away. Going through it live simply has the added benefit of the Live Q/A’s and student exercise submission.
