I’m proud to announce that our Eat Sheep game is now available for free on the iOS iPad app store!

Eat Sheep is a top down, puzzle game for iOS mobile devices. Your goal in the game is to navigate the level, eating the incoming sheep before they can reach the barn by controlling your monster. The game has been built completely by CG Cookie.

This iOS game was built almost exclusively with volunteer time over the last year. We used Blender and Unity 3D for all the 3D assets and the game engine.  If you wish to support us please consider purchasing Wool or Monsters in game! This will give you the ability to upgrade your monsters further, unlock more monsters, and help enable us to produce another game in the near future! This game would not have been possible without all the support you already give CG Cookie. I hope you’ll also consider giving us an honest review of the app from the App Store page

With enough support we can do another one :)

You can find out more on the game, read about the team, download free assets, and more on http://eatsheep.com

Download Eat Sheep Free for iPad Now!

Game Highlights:

  • Free to play
  • 60 hand designed playable levels across 3 worlds.
  • Play as Melvin or one of the other three lovable monsters.
  • Upgrade your Monsters speed and abilities.
  • Collect the 3 world trophies
  • Collect Wool as in-game currency to be used for unlocking new monsters, upgrading their abilities and buying cookies to keep them energized.

Coming soon to iPhone, iPod, and Android devices!

We are releasing the first version for iPads and will soon be releasing a version that is optimized for the smaller screens of iPhones and iPods. We are also actively working on Android version!

I guess not soon, since Unity (the engine/framework used for the game) doesn’t support symbian at the moment (if it ever will). And CG Cookie is dependent on Unity features..

Will there be any tutorials showing how you made this game in unity?

That would indeed be awesome, although it’s a daunting task aswel (to recreate the game for tutorial purposes), since there is much more into game making than graphics/models/animation. Think of programming, game designing, gameplay testing, beta testing, etc etc..

Unless, they would do just the modeling/animation/texturing/concept/basic unity import use tutorials.

We are planning a “series” that will overview the making of, some tutorials, and sort of a post mortem of the project. This will be a free series here on the site. Definitely on recovery mode a bit and should be putting this together in the coming weeks.

Congratulations CG Cookie on this special day!

Finally the finishline is there, and you have brought the game into the open, for all of us to see/feel/play (who have an ipad anyway..)

I’ll have to wait for the android version (S2) of this cute game (i like the art style, gameplay) to be available.
    I’m patient… no worries..

    Anyway, good job!

    Hey guys,

congrats on the game. Shame I don’t have a smartphone to fully appreciate it but I love the artwork.

ps: I told you when you first released Eat Sheep’s teaser but my comment was not accepted it seems. Anyway you have a typo in the first seconds of the trailer: “CGCookie presents it’s first [...]“. Should be “its”.

You guys work very hard, and it is your hard work that motivates and inspires me to do my work. That’s why I will try to contribute to cgcookie as much as I can, whenever I can. I want to say also, that, it is not only the resources that brings me here all the time, but the cgcookie team and the way you take the time out to interact with the members here. Hats off to you guys.

Great game! Interesting and exciting. Waited for her to eagerly.
Мery much looking forward the lessons about the creation of the game.

And… I think I found a couple of bugs, or some of the problems with walking the monster.

And… Why the graphics is not as high as in the game Mini Motor, which is made on the engine Unity?

    Hey,

Noticed on this youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/Luciotsampacabelo that someone is stealing content from blendercookie and reposting it themselves. Account owner seems to be from Brazil.

      Hey Thomas,

This user has been reposting CG Cookie content for quite some time; unfortunately there’s not a whole lot we can do without actually opening a legal lawsuit. There’s no real harm being done for the time being.

Thanks for the additional heads up, though!

Congratulations guys, this is a great achievement and I am sure new games will follow. I want to give you my thoughts about the game. I have been expecting the game for a long time (for the tutorials – and I am still waiting :) ) When I first started the game it felt a bit easy not that much excitement, but I must say that I am a hardcore gamer, I don’t love tablet games that much. But when my wife saw the game she loved it (she doesn’t play games that much). She finished the game in one night!! Then I understand that you guys really did a great – tablet – game. But she finished the game very easy, you should add some new maps (that can be purchased).
Finally I hope you guys make tutorials showing all the steps of making the game from scratch – this would even be a DVD series….
Again; thanks for this great game…

Thanks so much for the feedback onur! We spent quite some time trying to find a nice balance of difficulty for the game so that many people could enjoy it. It’s certainly not a hard-core game. We already plan to add more levels but cannot say when these will be available.

The training material is being planned out right now :)

Quick question, will the game be playable on all iOS devices. I ask this because certain games, particularly Unity games only support newer devices.

As an Apple developer myself, I cannot stress how much reviews help developers out (basically, reviews=downloads=reviews, and the more downloads the easier the app is to find) I’ll review it when the iTouch version is released.

This seems to be a free app with in app purchases. Any chance you could post some stats in the future to help us see how that particular setup works as well as any problems you may have encountered supporting in app purchases that may help people make a decision about releasing a game as a free app with ads, free app with in app purchases, or a paid app. I know it may be too early for this now, but it would help future game developers out.

Awesome work! Beautiful design. Everything very well done.
Did you guys use Unity Free or the Pro Version? Also, where did you find information to export from Unity to iPad? I noticed they have a plugin you can buy for $400 but still, do we need to code some C# stuff too. Would you guys mind to share a bit more info about this bridge from Unity to iPad?

    Keep up the goo work

I am amazed with the high quality tutorials you guys are publishing every time.

      Thanks Rodrigo!

The majority of the exporting from Unity to iOS is done through Unity, which requires the iOS Pro add-on. Once you have that you simply “build for iOS,” which creates an XCode project that can then be compiled and distributed. It’s really quite painless.

We are planning out a full, free tutorial series covering many aspects of the Eat Sheep development process right now. It should be available in a couple months.

      Thanks for the support!

The game looks cool, no doubt it is a good game as it is done by experts from CGCookie, you guys are great no second thought on that. It would have been very nice if this was completely developed with open source Blender as opposed to Unity 3D. My humble opinion is Open source community encouraging Open source softwares.

Unity3D allows us to have a lot more features with a lot less code than blender’s game engine.
Blenders game engine is cool that’s for sure, but unity is also free and allows us to focus more on the art side than programming :)
