Hello and welcome to this tutorial series on how to animate a book with flipping pages in Blender 2.6!

In this advanced Blender tutorial by Stanislas Paillereau you will learn how to create a detailed animation of a book with turning pages. This tutorial uses simple methods that allow you to easily add as many pages as you would like, while also being easy to control and modify.

What you’ll learn :

In Part 4 of this series, we will combine what was done in part 1,2 and 3 to achieve the animation of a book with flipping pages. We will learn how to use Blender’s shrinkwrap modifier to obtain the right deformation of each pages on the top of the mass of pages and how to apply a time offset to give the right flipping effect.

    Could open a book be a 20-part series? :)

Guess I will use this somehow. But, I make my buck from animating figures based on live figures. Not nearly useful for me in my job.

sorry stanislas, i will not send a render for this part!
    - most steps didn’t go well
    - rebaked page animation worked weird
    - 5 pages didn’t animated properly
    - i couldn’t animate book cover/thickness too

i try to watch and do again but nothing go on the right way…

    • Hi Tarik,

Oh no Sorry to ear that. Don’t hesitate to ask me to clarify any parts of the tutorial.
You can also post your .blend if necessary and I’ll have a look.

      Cheers,
      Stan

        your tutorials are really nice!
        - beyond cookie, hmm like a large cake!
        - too complex to go over again, spend 2 days are enough for me…
        - i like short but effective tutorials, so i will continue for others…

        thanks for fast response!

      • Hi Jeremy and Pepe,

Yes that will be a 5 parts series so the next one will be the last. I’ll show you some tricks to render a book having different textures on both side of the page and make a nice render.

thanks Stan. I managed to arrive successfull at the end of part4. There were many trials and am glad to say I was able to solve the problems as they occur. This tutorial brightens the path for me about bones and their linkages.
Now waiting fot the 5th part.
    Thanks for sharing youe knowledge

Thanks, this tutorial is terrific! Is really complete, and I never achieved a decent book rig alone! However, I’ve a problem, I need to scale the book and I’m not successful because there are some nasty artifacts in places where lattices are applied. what can I do? shall I remove all the lattice modifiers, scale in object mode and then reapply, or there is a simpler way?

    thanks a lot

    • Hi Fiorenza,

That is a good question. So I tried to scale everything (armature in object mode, lattice and meshes) all together (don’t forget to unhide all the objects) and it works but you can’t apply the scale because it will be all messed up with the shapekeys on the pages and the lattice on the mass of pages.

      Hope that helps,
      Cheers,
      Stan

hm… If I scale all I have (meshes, lattices, armature) the pages just won’t scale. the cover will but the binding and the pages not. and if I try to scale the lattices alone they scale and have an horrible deformation downwards, while the pages just won’t follow.
I can’t apply the scale means that if I grab all the stuff it will deform weirdly? I’m quite desperate :(

update: I scaled until desired the armature in pose mode, the rest followed evenly, without deformations. then I grouped all the objects in a group in order to avoid deformation when grabbing the book. the armature just works nicely as in the tutorial, at least!
this is not a good practice, I guess, but I’m on a hurry for a school project ;)

    • OK, that is still strange because it seems to work for me in object mode but good if you found a solution. Good luck for your school project !

    Brilliant,

i’m a complete newbie with blender, and i haven’t touched blender or the part 3 tutorial since July. Stan has taken this difficult tutorial (for beginners anyway) and made it very simple. Everything is explained very well and i have learned so much. (well i haven’t finished part 5 yet but so far so good!).

    Thanks again Stan,

    Jono

As I’ve said previously great tutorial series, I’ve learned a lot on different subjects and that was great :)

However now I kinda have a problem with my book rig…

I’m adapting your rig to a album i’m making for the 50th anniversary of my grandpa’s wedding, and the thing is that i had to set the page one offset to 0.005 in order to not intersect the mass of pages (not the 0.001 value on the tuturial), however when I add the page 2 with any value superior to 0.005 it overlaps the page 1, if i set it to less than that value it overlaps with the mass of pages…

I have plenty of photos on different textures now and it cannot overlap because it will always be very noticeable.

Any ideas on this subject will be very appreciated..

    Thanks in advance,
    endesse

    Hey.

Great tutorial, I learned very lot during this.

One strange thing. I noticed ,that, when I rotate whole book with armature, then pages do not deform correctly anymore. They intercect eatchother and with mass of pages. Is any way to avoid that?

    • Hi Vfxdanny,

I think the Elsyiun preset in the new Blender 2.66 is pretty much the same UI theme.

My shrinkwrap is not working correctly. :( Not sure if it is a bug or what. I put submitted image if you want to check it.

I’m having some weird shrinkwrap issues. My page isn’t wrapping as expected. My blend file is at:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/ozcsvssqazxs0d8/The%20Book%20on%20the%20Meadow%20-%20Mass%20of%20Pages%203.0-%20Rotating%20the%20Page.blend

When opened, it should lead right to the book and show my big problem.

Thank you for any help you can provide.
