Hi Tom,

I've been following your blog and I'm new to Blender in general. I'm using 2.64. Things have been going ok for me as I follow along, but my tornado doesn't seem to have the darker defenition that yours has. Mine seems like white smoke while yours has a much better look.

Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thank you for your help. I have no idea exactly how to do that...lol, but now I know what to do, and where to look. I literally DL'd Blender, then started this tutorial. I learn easier if I start with more complicated procedures.

Also, I went back to my tornado, and placed a new smoke domain in the the first layer, and the smoke started coming out. Did the same for the second, and smoke appeared again. I think I somehow unpaired the smoke domain in layer 3 from the first two layers/ Not sure how this could have happened, but how would I go about re-pairing?

Hi, to lower the preview resolution. check the preview resolution in the smoke sim settings, you can have it bake out a low res preview for the viewport and a high res for render.

The smoke doesn't show for me at all. Well, it did a few times, but only at the bottom. I tried messing with the eye & camera buttons to no avail. I've watched the video several times, and even done all of it over from the beginning, but still no smoke. Now, maybe it's my laptop. IDK. Also, when the smoke did show up at the bottom, it was VERY detailed. Is there any way to lower the quality of the preview maybe?

I'm using 2.64.

Hi mark, I have answered to your mail, but for anyone to see this I will post it here too.
After tiiiime to work on this, I think I just found out what the problem is.
Basically, smoke is emitted from particles. Usually particles have a a lifetime of 1 frame because once the smoke appeared, it will just act like smoke, without the need of the particles. In the case of our tornadoes, we are using some long lifetime particles and what is happening is that each particles become a sort of bubble or block of smoke, from wich the smoke is emmitted.
What you need, is the smoke to be extracted from the particles, not to stick to the particles.
So what I did : Select the particle emitters, and into the physics panel, enable initial velocity and set the multiplier value to something like 0.100. I made a render so you can see the result, this is the tutorial blend, with initial velocity :

I truly hope this will work now for everyone.
PS : Baked without high res, it still looks like blocky but once high res is enabled, it looks ok.
