Wow, this package is the most complete guide to drawing character concepts I've seen so far on the web. I'll give it a try. I don't have your skills Tim, but I think even a 50% quality result would still look impressive!

Awesome!

That is interesting... I just today discovered Krita and started thinking about putting the Gimp out of it's misery! Looked nice but was claimed to be pretty buggy for Windows though still. I'm interested if anyone with image-editing skill has used it on Windows. I must admit I can get by on my petty image editing skills but I sorely need training like this and an editor that's as fun to use as Blender is.

Your statement on "I always feel like I'm fighting with it" is exactly why we generally choose not to use GIMP :) We love what GIMP represents, but personally we don't think it's ready for the production environment. It is quite capable but very cumbersome to use in comparison to Photoshop, PixelMator and several other great image editors out there. Krita is looking quite good as well, but it's only on Windows and Linux at the moment and we haven't gotten a chance to try it out.

At CG Cookie, not only are we working in a true production environment via the Studio but we're also trying to help people learn how to get into the production world. Since Photoshop is now available as a subscription it is now much more accessible than it use to be for a very reasonable cost.

However, in the end, it is not the tool that matters but the techniques, concepts and skills that are taught through the lessons. There is nothing stopping anyone from doing this complete series in GIMP, Krita, Pixelmator or any other capable image editor and painting application. This is much more a techniques training series, than a software training series.

Cheers,
Jonathan
