In this tutorial I run through how to combing matcap images to make new GLSL materials for displaying your models in realtime with blenders GLSL shading mode. I also cover how to save out the resulting material as a new madcap image that you can then use when sculpting or showing off your models later.

Well going to check this tut right now!
Hi Ben ! happy new year and thanks for very well explained tutorial
Very Nice Ben, glad you could share that with us, I’ll be using that technique for some of my modeling as well…. Cheers!
Nice but where did the two video tracking videos go.??
Check the top of the page under the main menu, it says they have removed them while they fix some issues in the audio etc. There are links to the clips on vimeo at the bottom of the paragraph.
Read the statement towards the top of the page.
really nice!
so does this method have any effect on your actual render, or just your viewport dealio?
Where can i get Madcap materials?
Pretty sure the Matcap materials are from the Zbrush website(pixel logic), good luck.
You can also render out some shaded speres and use these renders as a matcap image.
You can find them all over the place. As Cato says you can render them yourself, you can hand paint them, or just google for them. The zbrush forums are a good place to try.
Awesome stuff! textures have always been kind of a mystery to me. this really shows how to get them to play well with each other and their materials.
Outstanding–Watching now !
Nice job!Did you make the alien?

I just finished making a Skin MatCap about a week ago – try it out, let me know how you like it!

That looks very nice! What are you licensing it under? I would love to include it in a resource pack.

Creative Commons of course! I’d love to have it included in a resource pack! Thanks for the great compliment Jon, I’m glad to hear you like it, it really did take a long time to get juuuuuuust right – you know?
Hi all,
I found these on Blender Artist a while ago (http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?174790-ZBrush-matcap-in-Blender/page6&highlight=matcaps). They have been working great for me.
They are made by “orgelf”

@Ben Simonds — great tutorial —
is there any chance you have an unposed and/or lower poly version of the model? I would love to rig him and use him as a character in a film I am making.
Great technique. Thanks a lot!
