Rendering Wooden Barrels in Blender Cycles

Hello and welcome to this Blender Cycles tutorial on creating Wooden Barrels!

In this video tutorial for Blender Cycles we create a complete scene composed of wooden barrels. At the end of this tutorial you’ll have a final render such as the one below and should feel much more confident in using Cycles.

If you’re not familiar with Cycles then check out our introduction tutorial here: http://cgcookie.com/blender/2011/09/16/blender-introduction-to-the-cycles-render-engine/

What you’ll learn

This tutorial covers everything you need to know to set up the scene, how texture the barrels and scene with material nodes in Cycles and how to setup the lighting for the scene.

    Help!
I continue to be amazed by the amount of realism cycles can create, but for some reason, doesn’t matter what build of blender I use, It doesn’t let me add image textures. At all. I add the texture, and it doesn’t do anything. I just get a black mesh.
    Thanks in advance, -Ryley

      hi Ryley
You can not connect a image texture directly to the material output, you have to connect it to a diffuse BSDF and connect the diffuse BSDF to the output material.

PS: It doesn’t work only with the diffuse BSDF.

No it doesn’t. They are completely different systems. The BGE is a real-time environment while Cycles is a dedicated renderer.

If it is not in there you can remove all the textures and materials to start from scratch.

Hey all. I know this tutorial is kinda old now, but I just watched it now for the first time. I loved it. I to have problems with the whole nodes thing. I get how it works. But like others have said, I just don’t know what all the different nodes do. And I really wish you guys would make a tutorial on just the functions of the different nodes and how and when to use them. That would seriously help a lot of people. Also Jonathan, if you were having problems seeing some of the specularity from the spec maps and the glossy shaders, it was probably because (like you eventually noticed) the lighting was just coming from straight down and not angled from the side or something like that. Also, If you still couldn’t see the specularity very well, it was because your light source was too large. The larger the light, the softer and lighter the shadows and the much larger and duller the specularity. The smaller the light, the opposite, harder darker shadows and more pronounced and sharper the reflections/specularity..
(photography background as you may have guessed..) ; )
P.S. Millions of more Cycles Tutorials!!!
