this is even great even if you don’t plan on texture painting. It’s a quick and easy way to create texture slots with all the correct settings. All you have to do is go back in and load your desired image files, and you’re done.

Hi Gavin, the add-on is included with Blender 2.60. You can find it from the User Preferences > Addons > Paint > Texture Paint Layer Manager. Just click the check box to enable it.

This is a superb add-on that cuts through a large degree of the complication of adding various maps. Thanks for this run-through.
Question: Has anybody had any luck with the Specular map? I’m amble to create dark/light areas on the image it creates for me, but with zero effect on the cube itself. Bit stumped!
I got a little confused about halfway through. Steps and clicks suddenly flew by very fast and I didn’t catch all of what was going on. That said, I’m really glad for this tutorial for reasons enumerated by everyone else already.

Just a question: I’m using texture paint to create details for walls and I’ve downloaded some decals textures from CGTextures.com to create dirt and damages; these textures have alpha and I can’t use’em correctly because I have black where I should have transparent!. Any suggestion?

Little question, sometimes the brush refuse to “paint”, but after some switching whith the color slider black/white it works, i’m doing something wrong?

I really enjoyed this tutorial. Great pace and clear examples! If I missed something, it was a more detailed run-through of how the different shading modes work. Personally I mostly use GLSL without “textured solid”, and hop between applied-textures and the isolated “color” version of the map with alt-z. But I still get confused by the options when I start texturing something.
Very cool. Does anyone know if there’s any way to manually place an image then projection paint it onto the texture? (Ala mudbox) I’m just trying to understand how you can use a specific portion of an image to put a detail exactly where it needs to be with this system (For like decals or rivets or scratches…pretty much everything really). Right now it seems to be pretty much impossible to achieve that.
Unfortunately Blender does not have a full stenciling system like Mudbox. What you can do however is add a texture to your brush and then change the mode to “Fix”. If you then also enable “Overlay” you can see the texture and position your model accordingly.

The only thing that’s working for me at the moment is to press Quick Edit (which points to photoshop via User Prefs.>File Tab> Image Editor), do my work in there, save, then press apply. I’m getting awesome results using filterforge’s (node based texture generator) ps plugin. =D

THANKS! I love texture painting in blender now…just a couple of problems though… Is there a setting for making the brush size stay at the same size as you zoom in and out? And is there a way to make the brush rotate as you’er painting in stitches around corners?
Bah, also is there a way to flatten everything out to the UV space so that I can seamlessly texture around objects within whichever image editor i’m using?
Probably not…would be cool though if there was a couple of checkboxes that automates this upon pressing Quick Edit…

Great tut… however i have some difficulties…when i set everything like on tutorial unwrap cube and click to paint, brush circle stays in place and nothing happen. Does anyone have/had the same problem?
Nevermind, i figure it out…it was set on cycles render so i guess it is ether slowing my comp or paint is not yet working with cycles
can it paint normal maps?
I tried this on an existing project and it doesn’t work. Then I thought I will try it as it is shown in the tutorail on a new cube. My problem: When I turned on the GLSL (whatever it means) and textures solid, it does’nt show the colours. What is the difference? The new version 2.61? The gear (Toshiba Laptop with Windwos Vista)? Anything at the configuration? I don’t know …

Ugh, when I unwrap, the UV is warped, but the seams are identical. Anyone know why this might be?
Okay, picked some new seems and the UV is only slightly warped. I’m pretty new to working with UVs and am wondering if this is to be expected.
Thanks for introducing this really cool technique! I have some problems though.
I tried to do the same as in the video, but for some reason, my paintings on the Bump Layer do not appear as bumps on my model. Also, I followed the tutorial to turn on Textured Solid and GLSL but still, all the layers do not show up together as I work on a layer.
I am using Blender 2.63.
What could be the problem? Thanks!
Hi,
You want to go into shaded view with Alt+Z to see bump.
You will need a light source such as a hemi lamp.
‘textured solid’ is just for previewing whatever is in the uv image editor

I’m having a hard time getting this to work. I’ve unwrapped the model, I’ve added a material, I’ve added the color paint layer but I am unable to paint on to my model.
Hi,
when you enter texture paint mode make sure the uv map is selected in the object data panel and in edit mode select everything and switch to the uv image editor and make sure that the image is in the editor.
The texture paint in blender is awesome, but it is a little finnicky to get working right.
