In this Blender 2.5 modeling tutorial series we go through the entire process of modeling a detailed, female body. This tutorial puts a strong emphasis on topology and anatomy, making use of photo referenced from 3d.sk
Part 08 of this series covers how to model the neck. In an effort to break down the anatomical structure, we visualize the neck in it’s most basic forms and then use those forms to layout the foundation for our topology. Using the process shown in the video makes modeling the neck a very simple process that only takes a few minutes.
Once the modeling is complete in this series we will move onto texturing the final model.

If you were to animate the head, wouldn’t you be better off with a different topology for the chin and jawbone? Wouldn’t it be better even if you weren’t planning to animate it? Right now, the face loops go from the chin, back and around the neck, not following any muscle or bone structure. Right?
I agree with you on this. There really should be an edge loop running along the line of the jaw up to the ear, then curving around up to join up on the forehead.
Currently, the grid of faces just continues, without poles or redirection, from the cheek down to the neck.
You both raise an excellent point. However, in this case; having a pole to redirect the flow around the jaw bone is not always necessary. If you intend to have a very sharply defined jaw bone then it would be more ideal to use a pole in that area. If you have a smoother jawline, as in this case, the current topology actually works quite well and allows you to keep things smoother with less hassle.
That being said; I normally use a pole in that area and having one can give you a bit more flexibility. However, it can also cause problems with connecting the jaw to the neck. In the end, it really depends on the model you are making and how defined you need that area to be. Thanks for the feedback, it’s always appreciated.

I’m going crazy waiting for the next in the series! I want to finish my 3d model but I’m worried I’ll end up with bad topology if I just model straight ahead without guidance.

I really like it when you go over the anatomy of the body as i am a visual learner it makes more sense in your illustrations than alot of the books i have read.

ha ha no just basically all of it, i think you should do a tutorial where you start with the skull, then add the muscles, then finish off with the skin, maybe on just like the face! i think it would help a lot, it would probably be a really long tutorial though, so i dunno.

would you be able to release a censored version? I’m 14 and there are parental/religious issues associated with nudity. could you just put black bars up or something? I really want to be able to do this so please take my comment into careful consideration. Thanks
An understanding of anatomy is necessary for art. You’d see plenty of nudity if you just went to an art museum with Greek statues. Maybe if you explain this to your parents they would understand.
Also ask your parents for permission outright. It’s easier to explain this when asking permission than it is to do so when trying to defend yourself when you’ve been caught. (There’s a good reason I have naked photos, mom I swear! lol) People in the past have made similar comments and then followed up saying that their parents okayed it when they just asked.

I have to agree with Artaddict, understanding anatomy is essential espeacially in character modeling. It is important in character movement during animation as well as creating a more life like character. To put black bars up would take away from a large part of modeling the torso and would cause issues when the time comes to model the characters clothing as well.

Hi Johnathan What anatomy book for artists do you recommend for people trying to get a better handle on anatomy for 3d? I have been working on his series and am currently on the ear. I remember you mentioning a book in a video but i do not remember witch one. I would love to hear your recommendations and possibly pick up theist books. I am currently studying game design at Full Sail and have been working with Blender and Maya in my free time to help broaden my knowledge and to hopefully make my self more marketable to game companies once I graduate. Thanks.

One thing Jon forgot to go over is checking how cylindrical the neck was. If you feel your own neck you can totally feel that the basic shape is very round but Jon never flipped the model upside-down. When you do you can see that the shape is more like a rounded triangle. I thought the neck looked a little awkward and when I flipped my model upside down and fixed it to make the neck look more cylindrical I thought my models neck shape looked much better.

Easiest way is to go to your user preferences- then go to addons and turn images to planes on. Now file, Import, and then Images to plane. Hope that helps Dude

This is probably the best tutorial I’ve ever followed so far. Not much of scratching the head what to do next. It’s easy to follow and listen to you, and I’ve learned lots of new tricks to use Blender better. Thanks to my okay skills to handle Blender as well, that modeling this is possible.
Anyway, I may have not followed the topology 100% precisely to this point of the series of this tutorial, but my model is looking super great nevertheless. I’m kinda amazed, since I’m still a bit of a beginner with modeling in general.
