In this second part of our Spider tutorial for Blender 2.5, I go in set up a better render environment, add some Particle Hair and adjust the settings to give us a nice fuzzy-looking appearance to our tarantula spider. Going on, we create a simple rig, using IK constraints for the legs, and Auto-Ik for the mandibles. Then we put the little guy in some cool poses and test out some renders of him.

      go to editmode
      amature > AutoName Left/Right

that save many time, if you have very much bones ;-D

Maybe that’s not the right place for requesting tutorials, BTW: I search for video-tutorials on how-to-make seashells (of various shapes) in a clean and fashionable way. Low-Poly if possible.

Some very good tips in these tuts David. thanks a lot.

i would separate the particle-system in one for the legs and one for the body. faces on the body are bigger in proportion. means they will get less hair then the legs. splitting in 2 smaller systems gives you the possibility to tweak more and get rid of the bold spots.

Every time I watch one of these tutorials, I learn something I hadn’t planned on. I don’t get to play with hair much, building buildings, but it looks really cool.
And I’m sorry to say I never knew you could comb the hair. LOL. That is too cool.

Nice 1. But the commands you used like “tweak” commands.. What are their shortcut keys??? I found only one i.e. “Period” i.e. “. key” on numpad… & also the part wherein you scale all the left hand side bones on duplicate them on right hand side dint work.. I had to grab & move them after scaling them on the x axis -1 times…

that key command often fails for me. To center the cursor, right? I always end up going into the , uh properties panel, the one at the left of the 3D window when you hit N. In there you can Zero out the cursor.

Aggggggghhhhhhhh! Thank you Sonofwitz! I looked and looked for how to do that for almost an hour and it was driving me crazy. I am so not used to Blender v2.6. If you hadn’t have said that I would have never found it. Again, thanks. I kept wondering why my origin looked different from David’s. It wound up in the front center of the spider instead of the thorax (or whatever the center-back portion is). I wasn’t able to move it like I knew how to do in the older versions of blender.

Thanks David, I always wondered why my particles never followed the animation, your a life saver. This was the first time I came across the reason and I watched most of your tutorials on youtube, Thanks again for the tip. Now I can animate my hairy creatures.

I’m using version 2.64. I set the Bias to .050 and the Size to 4000. When I render, my spider gets moved to the edge of the plane it’s sitting on, hiding most of the spider’s shadow. How can I get the same positioning of the spider as I get when I use Ray Shadow? The Buffer Shadow gives better detail of the particle hairs if I can get it to work right. I’ve included two screen shots below to help explain what I mean.

    Using Ray Shadow

When I change to Buffer Shadow

I’m at 32:54 on video 02 where the rig is complete. It seems like my rig is set up pretty well except my spider’s feet don’t stay planted, everything moves with the head. If I move just the IK bone at the foot, it works correctly. I’m new to all this so I’m sure I just missed something somewhere. Any suggestions?

You can fix this by placing the Armature modifier below the Particles modifier.

I went back to position 24:30 in video 02 and redid the connection for all of the IK bones to head and platform. Not sure how I missed that before but now the rig works properly! I just finished rendering my completed animation. What fun! Thanks for a great tutorial!
