In this Blender 2.5 video tutorial we go through the process of modeling, UV unwrapping and texturing a lowpoly concrete barrier.

Part 01 of this short series covers the modeling and UV unwrapping stage of the process.

First sorry for the english i’m french,
second : Kwiat I had the same problem. You have to enable the snap mode n edit mode first, set it in vertex. But in UV editor you needn’t to select the right snap target just enable it. In my computer it works. ^^

Thanks Jonathan Williamson for all your tutorials, you teach me in Blender and in English ^^

Well, this is a nice tutorial, and it did help me, but couldn’t you have used the same texture for the back and front, aswell as for left side and right side of the barrier? Like putting the meshes in the UV-map over each other?
I think that would’ve saved a lot more space there or does it cause some problems?

I absolutely could have done that. But in this case I wanted a bit more variety to the model and so I chose to use different textures for each side. Was this the optimal solution? Not necessarily, but it fit the needs of the model. Either way would work fine. However, if your outputting to a game that has very low memory requirements and you’re trying to optimize as best you can, then doing just one texture would have been better.

      Cheers,
      Jonathan

    hello,
nice work with the tutorials, they are very detailed and help make learning a pleasure. However I’m learning with blender 2.63 where the mesh addon is replaced with bmesh, would it be posible to update your tutorials to include this and other changes please, theres nothing worse than having to abandon a tutorial to go and learn another tutorial.

I have hit a problem at 16:45. When I attempt to perform an edge slide it does not work. In fact when I select any of the edges around the crack it only lights up the area inside the crack. What did I do wrong??

    I am operating in 2.63.

I would really appreciate it if someone were to respond. I want to finish this.

      Hi there,

The Inset tool is now included with 2.63 and so you do not need the add-on. Simply press CTRL+F > Inset

Fantastic site, great guides Jonathan but I seem to have a problem around 7:30..
I press CTRL+R, get the pink line, click and pull it all the way to the bottom.
Here’s the problem, I press G, followed by Z and when I pull it up it seems to make another mesh around the original one… I’ve added a screenshot to help clarify..

It looks to me like the edge loop is not cutting all the way through. Do you have triangles or NGons on the side?

I’ve just started up with Blender, so I’m not entirely sure what those would be… I just launched the program, watch the first guides from cgcookie and tried to find some simple guides.. What’s the method of checking for triangles/NGons?

        Thanks for answering so quickly!

Hi Jonathan, can you please, or anyone :) , clear this up? At 19:50 you converted two quads to triangles and then you put loop cuts through them. But somehow I’m not able to do that. My loop cuts are stopped and not allowed to go through those triangles, but only quads at the bottom of the model. Am I doing something wrong, I read somewhere that edge loops are terminated when a triangle is encountered? Thanks a lot!

        Hi there,

That’s correct, triangles terminate edgeloops and edge rings. At 19:50 in the video you can see my loops are also terminated on the sides where the meet the triangles. You can only cut through quads :)

Wow, you’re fast! :) I must be missing something, but your loop’s going up a little bit more than mine :) I mean the edge in this screenshot:
        http://www.freeimagehosting.net/lqn3l

My loop is terminated before it reaches the triangle and goes only through the botttom 3 quads, though, as here:

        Thanks for your patience!

Oh I see. The difference is that you’re using the new BMesh system, which wasn’t available when I created this tutorial. And so rather than created an additional triangle when the loop is terminated it is merely converting it to a quad immediately. If you’re not familiar with BMesh then check out this video: http://cgcookie.com/blender/2012/02/14/blender-bmesh-modeling-system-overview-01/

Yeah, I’m having trouble with the Inset Faces tool too. I can inset the faces, but I can’t extrude them out by holding the left click and going up. And I don’t think extruding is the right workaround. I be looking for da assistance :)

Hold ctrl when inset not left click, you can also press f6 to bring up a dialog after the action to adjust the settings.

It is not easy how to make this concrete barriers, and they need to be meticulous doing it as this parts are mostly use in bridges and high rise building construction. Some of the makers however, try to make this blocks more unique by using one coat stucco on it.
