In this Blender 2.5 modeling tutorial series we go through the entire process of modeling a detailed, female body. This tutorial puts a strong emphasis on topology and anatomy, making use of photo referenced from http://3d.sk

In part 01 of this series we begin by modeling a base mesh for the body that will stand to give us the basic proportions and shape before moving on to the detail modeling.

Once the modeling is complete in this series we will move onto texturing the final model.

And also, how did you make three-loop cuts? I can only make one.

You can make multiple loop cuts by first pressing CTRL + R and then using your scroll wheel or the Page up and Page down keys to increase/decrease the number of cuts.

I’m having trouble navigating with the reference model, what are the hotkeys for those? is there any tutorial around how to set those up? I can’t seem to grab them to move them around, I’m new and have no clue where to look for things yet, I’ve managed to figure out how to display the reference image, I just dont know how to grab them to move them around

Although I really want to start this whole 10 part tutorial I can’t force myself spending 5€ per photo. Time to get surfing I guess.

Eventually bought the pictures. I’m building my own Zlata from scratch :-) .
I know this tutorial is only a guide for using techniques in Blender but some parts really go fast if you’re actually building the model (and you dont want her to walk around like “Edgar” in ‘Men In Black’ ;) .
Thank you for this great tutorial though, I’m going through the whole thing !

    Just a heads up:

I’m being ripped off by 3D.sk right now. On the hobby plan you get to download 250 pictures per day.

    Day1 = everything went fine, downloaded 250/250
Day2 = searchfilter stopped working, cant find what I want, downloaded 250/250 anyway.
    Day3 = same as day2
Day4 = they didn’t reset my counter, so today I cant download.

Been in contact with support since day2.

To remove them from the cube you can select the cube, go into Edit Mode, select all vertices and then switch over to the UV/Image Editor and press the “X” next to the image name to remove it from the UVs :)

Sorry if this question has been asked before. I’ve only recently downloaded Blender and practiced the material in Getting Started. Am I ready for this series, or are there any more basic skills I need to learn in terms of modeling? Thanks in advance.

Okay, so I really dunno how you drag and drop your reference into the cube. Everytime I do it, my reference continuous to pop itself INTO the cube. How do you do it? Are you in some kinda mode or something that allows you to do it deftly?

      Hi Roxxi,

Drop the reference into the background, not onto the cube. If you drop it onto the cube it will assign the image to the UV channel rather than as a background image.

Make sure you’re in orthographic view and on a direct Front, Side, Top, or other direct view. If you’re rotated at all then it won’t show.

Be sure that you’re in Orthographic camera mode, not perspective. Background images will only show in orthographic. You can toggle between the two with Numpad 5.

A really dumb question: following the tutorial, I’ve gotten to the bit where there’s a cube in the image (1 metre, right?) and then, you scal the image to fit the cube. But you said that most humans are about 2 metres tall. I know the whole thing is relative, but I found that a bit confusing.
Still in all, an excellent tutorial. I’m a CGCookie member, but they seem to have discontinued the downloads bit… can’t find the links anymore. Which is a bit of a pain, since streaming video tends to stutter a bit, depending on the connection.

      Hi Robyn,

The downloads should all still be available via the “Download Source Files” just below the video. Do know you’ll need to be logged into your Citizen account to see this option.

As for the scale, I haven’t gone back and checked the video but that may have been a mistake on my part.

      Cheers,
      Jonathan

Oh DUH! I thought this was only like associated .blends and stuff. Thanks for that, Jonathan. Halfway through the first one, watching your artwork, for it is a lot that, when you do organic modelling… you give excellent pointers. These videos are worth their weight in GOLD.

        Well DONE!

Hello…I have a problem that, maybe, is really simple to solve but I can’t find the solution. Well, I’ve watched your tutorial several times and I think I’m doing everything right but when I modify the cube in front view it changes it in all views, so I can’t model the character right.
My solution to that was opening another blender window and in that second window select just the edge that I wanted and scale it for example but, in the front view, I can see the edge that I changed and the other edges that are behind that one so it’s very confusing.
Maybe that happend because I use Blender 2,63? Well I don’t know…Any help would be much appreciated…

Thanks a lot for your tutorials Jonathan!

Make sure you have orthographic view (numpad 5) activated. In case you don’t know how to add the image, open the right side menu (key N) and search for the submenu “Background Images” and check the box. Once you done that, click “Add Image” and then “Open” the desired image. Now press 1 from the number pad and then 5, there’s your image. In the same menu you can also select the side of the mesh you want the image to be viewable. It says “Axis: All Views”, you can change that.

Hi, I’m a lazy Italian. Sorry for bad English.

People who make tutorial like these are my idol!

Anyway I’ve got a question, difficult to explain in words, would be better with some images.

It’s about the topology of the joint between shoulder and arm. First step it’s extruding the faces of the actual shoulder from the body. Ok. But usually I then extrude the arm from the lateral faces of the shoulder, and then bend them down. Instead you extruded it from the bottom faces.

I don’t know if it’s clear enough. If it is, I’d like to know why did you make this choice, and if you thought about consequencies in rigging and animation…

Anyway, thank you very much for the time you dedicated to this work.

    Cheers

      Hi Tushar,

This is normal. If you want it to only scale in one direction then you can specify it during the transform. For example, if you want to only scale along the X-axis then press S for scale, followed by X to constrain it to the X axis.

Thanks for the tutorial! I’m having problems with the loop cut at 11:27. When I try to do the cut it only lets me do the top 3 faces. It seems like nodes between the third and fourth face are not attached. Any suggestions?
