In this Blender 2.5 tutorial series, I go over how to set up a series of Shape Keys to be driven by Armature Bones, followed by setting up controls for a Mesh Deform modifier, and finishing up with some custom Bone Shapes.

In this Part One, we create all the shape keys we’ll be needing for the rig, using Left/Right Vertex Groups to distinguish between each side of the face (smile left, smile right, etc).

Hmm I’m using a head model with the Mirror modifier applied. And even if I turn off X-Mirror and Topology Mirror in the Mesh Options, the actions are still being mirrored. Any tip on how to solve this? Thanks.

Same issue Rduran3d is having. at 10:25 in the video it shows that you deselected the x mirror and topology Mirror. I did that, but instead of me getting the same result as you did I am getting a mirrored rotation effect. Is there anything else I should be checking for?

Ok, so my error here is that I did not actually apply the mirror modifier. Click the apply button to apply the modifier and then make the shape keys…

Hey, I’m also having a problem with the x-mirror function whilst trying to use proportional editing in shape key edit mode. I’m using 2.63, have there been any changes for this?

Johnathon said earlier ‘X-Mirror only works on a perfectly symmetrical mesh and proportional editing does not work with X-Mirror enabled.’ But then how was David doing it?
I know he’s good, but can he defy the physics of the program :P

    Please reply.

    Regards,

My appologies. I’ve just read the description from part 5.

      My bad.

      Awesome job though.

Hi David! Thanks for the tutorial!
There is one thing I can’t figure out – at the very beginning, when you isolate and hide upper jaw: you select 1.face/mouth 2.upper jaw 3.lower jaw (three separate parts at a time)and go to EditMode.
In your case all three part are editable inside EditMode simultaneously. And I can’t make it work like that in my case. I can work with only one part at a time in EditMode.
I’ve tried to Join or Group parts but it didn’t help.
And when I set ShapeKeys they are added only to head, but not for all three parts (face and 2 jaws).
    What should I do?
I’ll be very grateful for your answer!

I have a question, do you have a tutorial available that shows how to add in the mouth and create it? (teeth, gums, tongue) or even something similar to that?

It’s a UV seam, for texturing. When you press ctrl-E/cmd-E, you will see the option “Mark Seam”.

    Hi there

When you first select the jaw, you seem to use a function that selects regions all at once – it is a white circle. How do I get this to work?

Press C on the keyboard, the circle will appear and use LMB to select areas.

When I enable Proportional editing tool + x mirror and topology mirror options, changes only occur to one side of my model. Any ideas where I am going wrong?

As much as I would like to say these tutorials helped, the only thing I can comment on is the mouth noises. For lots of people, me included, they make life unbearable. It is a common problem with videos here, new and old. I would love to learn from and support cgcookie, but since I can’t make it through a single video, I can’t.

      Hi there,

I’m sorry for the videos audio quality isn’t working for you. You say it’s unbearable in the new videos as well? Including our most recent? I ask because if there’s something we can consciously work on addressing in our recording methods then we most definitely will.

Do you find the “mouth noises” to be unbearable in any of these?

Also, could you possibly describe what “mouth noises” are that are breaking the video for you?

      Thanks!

I really wish it didn’t sound so trivial, because for most people it is.

I hadn’t watched those videos, mostly because they weren’t subjects I needed refreshing on. But the noises I am referring to, in this video at least, are the tongue smack with every pause in the sentence, but a lot of the videos I have tried watching had swallowing and other types.

The video and audio quality is superb otherwise. A video I loved watching was the Audio Visualizer Scripting tutorial, solely because the speaking was pleasant and natural.

Like I said, I know you guys are providing a free service and all, and for most people my complaint sounds silly. I will check out some of your most recent videos to see if it has gotten better.

I really appreciate your patience with this.

    Hi,
I was following the Tutorial, wich is great!, and suddenly Blender stopped Kopying the previous shape key? If I hit the Plus key(numpad) ist produces the Basic key, and not the last one. So at the Point using the vertex groups I can´t produce the movement by duplikating the key!
Does some one have any Idea how to solw this?
