In this Citizen exclusive Blender 2.5 video tutorial series, we go through a hard-surface modeling exercise by creating a highly detailed M4 assault rifle.

In part 1 of this modeling series we block out the major shapes present in the subject to create a basic representation of the final model.

    very cool,
I just wanted to say I really appreciate what all you and people like you do for blender, getting these tuts out really help show what can be done with blender and the more people who delve into blender and take the time to learn it the better:)

when I first picked up blender all I could find was, I think the wiki blender “noob to pro”, which was a lil hard cause it lagged behind a few of blender releases then I accidently found cgtuts+ and found your “modeling a low poly character” then followed you here and have really enjoyed and learned a lot from your tuts :D

so.. sorry for the off topic rant, but just wanted to say thanks and keep up the good work.

Here’s a link for a good picture if anyone’s looking to model some of the myriad accessories for the M4:

Jonathan, outstanding tutorial, thanks for doing this series. As a former Army infantryman for 12 years, I never even wanted to attempt this task given my intimate knowledge of the details of an M4, but so far I’m very impressed with your work and attention to detail. I can’t wait to see the next part of the series!

Hey Jonathan, great tutorial. I’m sure this series is going to be very popular.

If you’re looking for more reference images, try looking up the AR-15, it’s the civilian equivalent of the M-4. Also the M16 is the same gun but with a different butt stock and barrel assembly. Basically, the center body of the M16 is the same on the M4. That should open a lot of doors when trying to find reference images.

Also check out the official Department of Defense websites for photos. They are all pretty much public domain.

With any luck, you can get enough reference images to do a fighter jet for your next big project.

In the beginning, I noticed that when you changed the vertices to 12, the circle’s orientation lined up so that top, bottom, left and right were edges. When I change the number it has the vertices in those places. I have to rotate it 15 degrees on the x axis to match what’s in the video. Is there a setting that does this automatically?

      Hi Shawn,

No there’s not a setting for it. I believe I actually rotated mine 15 degrees as well.

Hi. How did you select only “body” of the model on 10 min 37 sec of video. Thank you.

Press L while the mouse is hovering over one of the vertices. This selects every other vertex that is connected to it.

I downloaded the source files, but when I watch the video from the file, there are artefacts at some points. Is the video file corrupt, of is there another reason for the problem?

What are you using for your media player? Personally I recommend VLC from http://videolan.org

Thanks. I was using windows media player, but I’ll try VLC. It isn’t normal artefacts though, the entire video completely pixelates for a few seconds at a time.

Let me know how VLC works, Windows Media is notorious for bad video playback. If the artifacts are still there let me know and I’ll check it out.

This tutorial is truly amazing but, i am stuck at some basics that prevent from me to advance in model creation:
1)when you he created a circle mesh to start modeling the circle apeared infront of him, when i creat it, it is FLAT. so i need to press f6 and chose “change point of view” or something to make it apear infont of me.

    2) during the model creating i saw that he moved freely in the backround picture, he could focus on the front edge of the picture or the rear back, how can i move the picture so i can see/focus on a certain part of the backround picture?

    Thank you.
