Something we realized is though there are plenty of amazing video blender tutorials all over our site, there wasn’t a clearly defined starting point. As with anything there has to be a beginning or an initial handshake of “Hey, nice to meet you” to really get started on the right foot.

This is why we have created this dedicated “Getting Started with Blender” page to help break the ice and get introductions out of the way.

In this video we will cover where to download and how to install to your local machine.

I have been through all the tutorials … I cannot seem to find one that helps in importing sketchup 8 files (even if saved as a .dae) Also cant find where to change the units from imperial to metric?

When I import my sketchup file as a .dae it says it is there but I cant see it. Is it a layer setting? What am I doing wrong?

Please help, this looks so exciting and I am itching to get some renderings going …

    Thanks.

I have downloaded the file to install blender in Fedora 15, but it doesn’t install the program. The only thing I can do is to open blender and to work with it like a virtual program. It is not within my system and it doesn’t appear in my applications. Why? What do I need to do to install it?

Hi Sneyder, the linux version is a stand-alone and so does not include the installer. If you wish to install it so as to automatically appear in your menus and such you need to either install it via a package manager or add Blender to the menus manually. There is likely another way to do it but I’m not familiar enough with Fedora to say with confidence.

I do exactly as the video does, however when I get to the part where it is actually downloaded,I seem to be getting different folder choices than what is shown in the video. I’m assuming because your downloading an earlier version of Blender, however when I go down the folder choices, there’s only one to start, I can not find Blender.exe I think I have found it, however when I click on it it asks me to extract the file and put it on my hard drive. I have done that and still when I try and open it, it gives me a black box with white text similar to command prompt. The text says file not found. Any ideas what I could do or if I”m doing anything wrong?

      Hi Kevin,

Are you able to send me a screenshot of the error when you try to open the Blender.exe?

      Hi Joseph,

If you’re trying to animate a TV screen or something like, then you can load the movie file or image sequence as a Image Texture and then set the frames accordingly in the Texture settings.

@ Lefti97, uhm you could try Google sketchup, very easy to learn. Once you get the hang of Sketchup come back to blender, however it probably will still have a steep learning curve.

        Hi M,

I may be mistaken, but I don’t believe Blender runs on anything older than 10.5. On the download page the minimum system requirements are 10.5.

How do I get my interface to look like the one in the tutorial? Mine is set up completely different. The one in the tutorial looks more user friendly.

For Linux users, there is a big change that Blender is already available in the standard software repository. Check that first before manually downloading and installing! Only thing is, it might not be the very latest version available but at least on Ubuntu 12.10 it’s still quiet recent.
