really nice tut, very in-depth and informative, could have been a bit shorter tho… i think..
Guy’s I don’t know if it’s just my computer but around 41 minutes there is some sort of audio problem.
never hapend to to me
Same problem is happening to me
@holly confirmed, but the problem starts (for me) around 33 minutes in. The problem seems to be that the audio skips ahead
excellent tutorial jonathan, learnt a lot of new techniques, the only thing that spoilt it was the sound bug around 35 minutes onwards, which put video and sound well out of synch by about 5 minutes near end.
great tutorial, but the Audio was skipping really bad. The sound actually stopped 3 mins before the video
Awesome tutorial…! Well done
yeah, great tutorial, but could you please reupload it? would be much appreciated!
Nice tutorial! It worked fine for me until about 30 – 35 minutes through it. You’ve read this 4 times already, but you really need to fix the sound on it.
Ah… it’s not only me having this problem.
I noticed the skipping the first time environment lighting was enabled. Perhaps it took up too much CPU power?
Hey guys – Apologize for the late response here, we are unable to monitor the comments as closely as we would like, but again if you guys notice anything like this please click the “Need official support” button right above where you put in your comment that something is wrong. It immediately notifies Jonathan and I via e-mail, and will continue to e-mail us until we respond. Best way to slap us in the face and get our attention from our day gigs and such.
We are starting to notice that as we approach the 1hr length on tutorials that the videos are becoming harder to view on some users screens. We will work to break this up into 2 parts to help this and re-upload here shortly.
*Update we are still working feverishly on this. Camtasia decided tonight is the night it wants to pick a fight with us.
Was wondering if you could give your display settings/ units set up for this tutorial?
Thanks,
Aaron
valeu pelo tutorial
very good, thank you. waiting for part two…
I enjoyd the tutorial – look forward to part 2
Hi guys thank you for a good tutorial. Although i was a little disappointed that you used sub surface on what is quite a basic shape. Is it because the 2.5 modelling tools are not robust enough to do it low poly? Ive had to go back to 2.49 for learning blender modelling as without a usable bevel tool its really tough going. I did learn from the video so thank you.
You know, I Like this one. Most like because it has to do with my other passion.
Now I need to get me a brew at my local Coffee shop…
I like all the hints, like shift+n to delselect vertices belonging to another object, (like L but inverse) is awesome.
the fact you don’t open menus to do trivial stuf like that is just better! goes quicker an you pick it upp faster. what you I would love to see is small bubbles , hint bubbles.
like a small bubble somewhere at the bottom of the video ( you can just do it in photoshop, and add it to the video in VSE ) that says.
“shift + N, deselects vertices/edges/faces belonging to the entire mesh. good to use when excluding selection”
awesome work as usual from blendercookie.
Nice tutorial for novices!
I wanted to share just a simple quick tip:
you can quickly fill a new face while using the Edge Select mode. Then you need just to select two edges and hit “F”. If you want to create a triangle face – it works the same. And another good thing in the modelling process is the ability to join two triangle faces: select two adjacent faces and hit “F”. Blender is very powerful and simple about this kind of things.
And I just want to bring your attention to this important tutorial
http://www.blendercookie.com/2010/05/17/custom-hot-keys/
Assigning custom hot keys for changing the selection mode will definitely accelerate your workflow! (Ctrl+Tab then select by mouse is too slow)
Still no part 2?
Oh well..
My apologies on the delay for part 2. Due to a death in the family I am out of the office for rest of this week. You can expect part at the beginning of next week!
-Jonathan
Feel sorry for you, Jonathan.
Oh, I only saw this now. Didn’t check back before.
I’m sorry
Great tutorial!
One question, if there was a way to contact you privately I would use it, and it’s totally unrelated, whenever I push Ctrl+N (for new project) the default is my other project from a while ago. How do I fix this?
are you gonna make any thing that can show you how to make a lite saber
What if I told you I already did it?

Enjoy!

It’s really a good tut!
I translated it into chinese(http://blog.blendercn.org/?p=691), and even more, I want to translate it’s subtitle into Chinese also.
Can you send me the .srt file of this tut? or I’ll do it by myself: first English, then Chinese.
perfect tutorial – I guess because I seem to be drawn towards product design and because I been intending to model exactly this its perfect timing! -
look forward to the texturing side for your approach and tips as always
best regards
john leigh London uk
Awesome! I’ve learn’t a lot from this tutorial =) When’s the texturing part coming???
Thank you very much for this! I went through the video very slowly to absorb everything. This taught me a lot of new techniques and tricks I didn’t see in other videos. Looking forward to part 2!
Thanks for the delay between part 1 and part 2.
I needed it because I’m new to Blender and it takes me forever to figure out what you’re doing.
For a Blender Noob, I frequently have to pause, replay, search the web for blender help, rinse, repeat!!!
After an embarrassing amount of time, I completed it.
I needed a tutorial like this.
Now for part 2…wonder how log that will take me.
Thanks a lot.
Hey, how did it go at 4:59. I’ve been trying to do the bottom of the cup for about 15 mins. I’m usually great at figuring things out, but with this, I can’t. I feel like giving up completely on this confusing application.
Great tutorial to start with blender, just great great great !
thx ppl
600 faces for a coffee cup…
You just killed me inside.
Nice tutorial trough!
Hey John, I’m using Blender 2.49 with this tutorial and my snapping tool doesn’t seem to be working. I did everything you did in the tutorial and I am not getting an results. It’s just not snapping to the vertex.
How do you pan different angles with the mouse? or are you just clicking #’s on the numpad?
n/m i figured out the last question.
My new question is at the 3 minute mark where you tell us to extrude the cup in 1 unit and down 1 unit.
When I try to extrude it 1 unit ‘inward’ it doesn’t extrude it ‘inward’. I also thought maybe you ment to say ‘scale it to the left 1 unit’ but when i did that my outcome is different than in the video.
I’ve made it through this tutorial to the 13:50 mark.
I am stumped to why my coffee lid blows up when i click “even thickness” during the solidify modifier process.
I’ve recorded a video of what I’m talking about here:
http://www.justin.tv/vietpho/b/269828142
Please help anyone? I can’t move on with this tutorial until I figure out why this is happening.
Hmmm, that is interesting VietPho… Have you tried flipping the normals by selecting everything in Edit Mode and pressing CTRL + N?
-Jonathan
@ J.Williamson
I’ve tried that and get the same results.
Hopefully someone on here can help me figure out why this is happening so I can continue the tutorial
I will try and create the top of the lid from scratch again later today. It’s taking me a while to finish this tutorial because this is my first project ever on blender and it took me a while to figure out all the hotkeys and process.
I was confused during many parts of the tutorial and one part was when making the lip of the cup. He said to extrude it inward and then downward, and I didn’t know I was suppose to hit e to extrude and then hit s to scale; as a result, I was stuck on the part of making the lip for a day or so.
around the 8:15 mark: selecting with box
When he selected things with the box, I didn’t know you had to hit b and left click to do that -.-
Also, later when he was doing the ctrl r to add extra thickness, I didn’t know you can get double parallel ones by using the scroll on your mouse.
I’m learning a lot from this tutorial. At first it was a bit confusing because he talks so fast, but then again, most people have background knowledge to follow what he was saying.
I’ve just worked the lid of the cup from scratch again and I encountered the same problem posted in my first justin.tv video post.
Here is another justin.tv video post showing my problem on this second attempt:
http://www.justin.tv/vietpho/b/269870697
Ignore the notepad typing. That was fail on my part lol. It doesn’t even show up correctly on my stream video
Any idea what is going on guys?
I’ve just attempted the lid part a 4th time and got the same result when trying to even thickness with the solidify modifier
somebody please help me, I am a new blenderhead and I dont understand how to use the exact units that he is. My settings causes my units to be very different from his. what am i doing wrong? how do I fix it?
Hi Keenan, can you further describe your problem or perhaps provide a screenshot? I am not sure what the problem. For most purposes, unless exporting to another render engine/game engine the exact units are not generally necessary.
-Jonathan
WOW !!! Advanced HQ tutorial for novices like me.Great speed and lots of very useful tips. This is a perfect tutorial to learn things.
Thanks
Hello, I have a little problem, at 19:00 when you delete two top vertices, you also delete strange spikes, but I not,I don’t know where is the problem.
Here is a .blend file http://uploading.com/files/82mm4392/coffee.blend/ thanks for help
This is great tutorial, thank you and sorry for my english.
For some reason I just CAN’T merge the vertices of the bottom of the cup that appears at 00:04:51 using extrude then scaling them to the external vertices using snap and removing doubles. I dont know what to do :/ . Um using blender 2.58 please someone help me.
When you are creating the circle for the upper part about at the 10 min mark, the arrows that areused to move my objeck are stuck on the thing that appears when i left click somewhere? And when i scale it is somehow connected to it as well, I see you had that in the tutorial and you pressed something that made the arrows connect to the object but you dont say what is was? help please.
Is the solidify modifier really important that you add at the 14 min or does it make a big difference later on ? Because when I add it everything just gets messed up so i was thinking of skipping it, would that be alright ?
how do you extrude inward? im at the part where you make the lip?
