Arguably the single most important aspect to modeling is topology.
This Blender 2.5 overview video tutorial takes a look at the topology of the human foot, examining each of the main edgeloops, poles, etc.

Hmm I really have to disagree with you on the topology here. The extruding the toenail from the surrounding topology I think is a bad idea
You can’t control the resolution of the nail separate from the rest of the toe, and the toe is relatively hard surface.
Since you are doing a game resolution foot this is especially important.
The ‘between toe’ connections doesn’t work either in my opinion, there will be smoothing issues.
Also you don’t have any knuckle structure or flex structure for the toes so you can’t get good deformation out of them.
Another issue is I really don’t like your ankle structure it doesn’t allow for any realism.
This topology is really only suitable for a distant shot on a game character, but due to the toenail method isn’t well suited for that either.
On the positive side I do like your heel, and your demonstration of how diamonds are used for merging.
Fetish anyone?
Seriously, always good to see your tuts! Thnx for all the insight your sharing
Thank you very much for this tutorial, I really like your series on the various body parts edge loops. It’s very interesting to be able to study each element individually like this
I tried to download the source files but the system seems to be corrupted. Can someone get on this?
@bennytheblender – Just sent you a direct e-mail also to help see what you are seeing. Also if you guys are have a concern or need support drop us an e-mail to suppport@cgcookie.zendesk.com. This gets notifications to both Jonathan and my e-mail box. We may miss some comments.
/return to blender.
I would certainly pay for a foot with the 20 + bones in it and their articulation (=rigging ?).
…as for the “right” topology, well,I would be the last one to oppose to your opinions!…you guys are way more advanced and skilled than me!…but…
…Jonathan, what can I say more?…as far as your artistic and teaching skills…well, you are simply the best around, imho!…I can’t emphasize more on this:all your tutorials have greatly helped me in understanding fundamental 3d modeling concepts I was missing and to build some solid foundations,as well…thinking seriously to join and become a citizen…
…just keep the good work…think we all need this!
…once more,really thanks…hats off to you!…
