We also have a public “Male Head Modeling Series” available for view. Just scroll down and each section is listed.

Hey Jonathan,
I’m thinking of buying Citizenship for this, but I recently finished the Modeling A Male Head series. How much will this differ from the previous one? Also, will you follow up this series with the rest of the body too, or is that something I should buy your DVD for?
Hi Patrick,
The primary differences between this one and the male head series will be the accuracy the of the model, the number of references, the quality of references, and being done in Blender 2.5 versus 2.49. I do hope to follow this up with the whole body at some point but it is not on the immediate task list.
Hey Jonathan,
Thanks for your quick reply. =) One last question I forgot to ask: Will you follow up with shading/ texturing the head as well? (I’ll probably buy citizenship regardless, but it would seem like a nice addition).
Does this mean there will be quite some time before the next mechanic installment or was 7 the last in the series?
Don’t worry if you just needed a break from it, I understand.
Started watching the video for this one and the question was answered.
I guess i should start actually reading the tutorial descriptions.
Hello.
I try to use your tutorial but nothing happen.
Few days ago (3) I renewed my three monthly payment of 25$ to you guys. I need to pay 4$ ?
did you log in to the citizen page?
if its not letting you log in it may just be a delay in the renewal
Hi Spender,
Thank you for being a Citizen.. I just checked and your account looks good. But if you are still having trouble accessing the education or other account specific questions, please send us an e-mail at support@cgcookie.zendesk.com and I will be sure to help out.
Cheers,

I joined the citizen, and it really worth! Congratulations Jonathan!
I am glad to hear it! As long as people find them worthwhile I will keep making them
When will be the 2nd part?
Chances are pretty soon
Thanks Jonathan for the fantastic tutorial, the citizenship has already paid for itself! I like the streamlined version that u r doing, as i have seen and done some of your other head modelling tuts, but this was really cool using 2.5, combined with your expertise, can’t wait for more.
I was totally impressed with the quality of the downloaded .mov file, it is way superior to the mp4 versions, clear as crystal, it really helps with seeing exactly whats happening on screen, whereas its been a bit difficult to see sometimes on these videos, often the image just aint that clear, and a bit dark, in the mp4 format. thanks!
I guess now its time for me 2 download the whole blender cookie website, really excellent work.
I appreciate this tutorial, keep it up Jon. I will be happy to see a second part soon
. And even more happy when you announce “modelling the female body”. It’s been an hour as a citizen and I find it worth already. Keep up the good work. Congrats!
First of all: You are GREAT!!
For those who bought the Blender Training Series… can we download this tutorial without any account or paying anything?
Thank you so much!
Enzo
hey jonathan, thanks alot for another really great tutorial.
a little tip: i also try to tweak reference images in an external editor before using them in blender. to avoid the problems you had, you should make them all the same height AND width, so they align perfectly without the need to resize…
Just wanted to give some feedback here. I became a paying Citizen and it a huge value! Just finished the first Female Head module. I was able to follow along easily, making my own model while watching the video tutorial on a second monitor. The instructions were clear and I really like how Jonathon discusses the philosopy behind the modeling approach. Great stuff!!
Watching the tutorial also gave me a practical view of functions like edge selects and loop cuts and the use of keyboard combinations like Ctl-R and Alt-Right-Click, etc. Very useful and doing something real worked better for me than just reading from a book.
VERY well done and greatly appreciated!!
Brett
Thanks for the very humbling feedback Brett! This is the kind of thing that keeps us doing what we’re doing.
Cheers,
-Jonathan
I just purchased Citizen, specifically for this tutorial. I have a contract to model a female character, and really needed this specific instruction.
From what I can tell though, the files are only available for download, little disapointing, I’m ready to work, and now I am looking at a 2hour wait time even on my extreme cable modem. You need to encode the citizen programs in flv or mp4 and stream them from your server or another. Citizens shouldn’t have to wait to watch their tuts, while free users get instant gratification.
Hi there,
This is certainly a poor limitation of the current Citizen program but it is something we are resolving very soon! I don’t want to spoil any surprises but there’s a lot of development happening on the Citizen front that you guys will have access to in the near future. For the time being I hope you can be patient with us. You may also be experiencing the slow download times that a few other users have reported. We are also working to resolve this as quickly as we can.
Again, my apologies for the delay. If you are unhappy with the membership we’ll be more than happy to refund you. If you have any questions or need any other kind of assistance please let us know by emailing support@cgcookie.zendesk.com
Cheers,
-Jonathan
Thanks for the quick reply.
That’s good to hear that things are coming, I can’t wait. I’ll be patient, no worries. I’m actually quite happy to be able to support the site however small, your training has been an invaluable asset to my learning curve. I was mentioning it, just so you guys would know it was a frustration, because in all other ways your quality is world class, IMO.
Jonathan,
I recently became a citizen, and your tutorials have been very informative. The philosophy behind the process has totally made the difference for me. Back in April of last year you made the comment of following up the human head tutorials with a “whole body” series, and I am curious what the status of that project might be.
Hi! I hope someone can help me. I tried searching for a solution but I’m not sure exactly what to search for to get an answer. ^_^;
I’m following along with this tutorial and for some reason my circles and “cube” (face and head loops) are separate. So when I get to the point where I need to combine the neck pieces together I am unable to select both necessary pieces to create the needed faces.
In the Outliner I have a top level listing for both Cube and Circle whereas, in the tutorial, the Circle is presumably under the Cube (guessing, since it’s not visible in the Outliner).
I’ll keep looking for a solution on my own but, solution aside, I’m also wondering what I did wrong at the start or if this is just due to changes made in later versions.
Thank you!
-Rufina
Hi Rufina,
What you need to do is join both objects into a single mesh. This can be done by selecting both the head and neck in Object mode and pressing CTRL + J. This will merge them into a single mesh such that you can create the faces as needed.
-Jonathan
Hi Jonathan!
Thank you! Late last night I finally discovered Join and the heavens opened up, angels sang, and I facepalmed that it was a pretty darn obvious command.
(Then I went to bed finally, whew.)
Any idea why the new object didn’t spawn joined to the first like it (apparently) does in the tutorial? Just due to different versions of Blender? I suppose, in the long run, as long as I know the solution it doesn’t matter. ^_^;
Thank you!
-Rufina
Whether a mesh is added as part of an existing object or not depends entirely on whether you are in Edit mode or Object mode. If you are in Object mode it will always add new objects as a separate object, rather than joined to the pre-existing object.
-Jonathan
Ah, I see! That’s very good to know. Thank you so much! This tutorial series is really amazing. I’ve learned so much just from the first two installments, so far.
Hi Jonathan,
Great tutorial. I’m working through it (in 2.6) and I somehow got the mirror flipped backwards (I’m guessing). I’m at 26:01 in the tutorial where you’ve exturded the neck “muscles” down and you are deleting faces from the neck circle and joining those faces with the newly extruded neck muscles. When I try it, it makes a big criss-cross of faces. After trying to fix it on my own, I’ve realized that the face it’s trying to make is on the opposite side of the neck (the mirror side if you will). Is there an easy way to fix this?
Thanks
-R
If you disable Clipping on the Mirror Modifier then you can move the crisscrossed pieces right across to the correct side of the center line. If you they are two separate objects then you just need to select the backwards one in Object Mode and press S > X > -1
I hope that helps!
-Jonathan
That didn’t work, I’ll just start tutorial number 2 with the completed blend that came with the download.
Thanks for the quick reply.
the lag on this video is really distracting.
too bad really
If the video is lagging it is likely due to a slow internet connection. Might I recommend joining as a Citizen Member so as to download the videos for playing locally?
-Jonathan
is there someplace i can wiev this as a pdf? having trouble following the video.
Unfortunately not. Is there anything in particular you’re having trouble with?
-Jonathan
its just rushed.
i might be a slow learner, but i like to take my time.
text and pictures allows me to do that, ive been doing photoshop textures for 10 years. my partner (3d modeler) just quit, so now im forced to get into the 3d waterpark, and im decked out in my all new flotation device, but i feel like i have to reenflate the damn thing every 5 minutes.
my trouble is in the pacing. im sitting here with blender on one side and the browser on the same screen, pausing after every sentence, going over to blender to do what you tell me, and back and forth. its quite difficult to make out your meaning at times. sometimes you just do something and THEN tell me how.
i wish instead of a video youd use screens to tell me where to go,
and actual text on screen, so i wouldnt have to listen to everything.
Just thought about something…. Poor Jonathan has to talk to himself for 30 minutes to an hour for every tutorial. You are a true blender warrior. I praise you.
Talking to one’s self can be quite a good way to pass the time, though
