In this quick Blender 2.5 video tip we show you have to use the screw modifier to quickly create threaded objects or springs. This method is non-destructive and very quick to use.

Note: the screw modifier requires a recent 2.5 testing build from http://graphicall.org. Any version newer than revision 27747 will do.

That is so cool :D I tried following along but got some very different results and didn’t really work very easily. That’s still a very cool tip video though :)

You can with some extra work. The main difference between the array and screw modifiers in this case is that the screw modifier extrudes the mesh rather than simply duplicating it. So yes, you could do this with the array modifier but it would require you to use a mesh with faces rather than the single set of edges.

Wow, this is so good for springs. Looks like it works a lot better than the old workarounds. A couple of constraints and maybe a driver and you have some good mechanical rigging. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

As the description says, you’ll need a recent testing version of Blender. I am using revision 27747 in the video. You can download testing builds from http://graphicall.org

In the tutorial, you deleted the cube vertices, instead of deleting the cube, so when you created a circle, the ‘object data’ for it still read ‘Cube’ (not circle). I successfully replicated this, and it worked fine, but when I created an actual circle on it’s own (instead of deleting a cube’s vertices and then creating the circle as you did), the screw modifier did not work. What am I doing wrong?

What about it is not working? The kind of object you add initially should have no effect on the modifier working or not working.
