It can be turned on in the preferences... I have no idea why people would use the trackball orbit mode. I think turntable should be the default. Anyone with me? It had gone unnoticed because of the fact that zoom was also linked to the same key (It used to be bound to Ctrl instead of Alt). I had moved zoom over to the alt key and had access to it, as 2.49 also had viewport snapping set to Ctrl. Something about the new keybinding system had made zooming overriding the snapping feature.
