Blending Life 2: Starting 25 January 2010

We are very excited to announce CG Cookie as a sponsor for the BLENDING LIFE 2 contest.

Before the new year, we were approached by Len to see if we would be interested in helping out with Blending Life 2. I was surprised to get the knock on the door, but was very happy to work with Len and for CG Cookie to become a sponsor. I have offered up some neat prizes and this should be a great contest and see how far you guys can push blender to create some cg heads that rock the eye candy out of artists around the globe!

If you have a moment check out some of the detail below and help get this contest off to a huge start for every one involved.

What is Blending Life?

BLENDING LIFE is a 3D computer graphics contest, by using the software Blender. Blender is the free open source 3D content creation suite, available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License.

Get Blender here —> www.blender.org

The aim of this stills contest is to create a 3d model of a realistic looking human (portrait only) that looks like a real, live and breathing human being. The more lifelike, the better. Give it personality. Give it expression, whether it is subtle or more expressive is your choice. Think crazy detail in every aspect of what makes a person look real, especially skin texturing, eye texturing, lighting and shading. Give it that twinkle in the eye that says: “I’m alive!”

Blending Life 1 showed us that Blender is on a solid path and competing very well with the broader CG world when it comes to creating realistic looking 3d human models. This time we’re going to up the stakes a notch and prove our worth even more. Our community has the talent, and we have the tool. Are you ready for Blending Life 2?

Interesting. However, will the first prize winner really need CG Cookie’s training series? ;P

I don’t just think so, I know so. For example I have made portraits with Blender but that’s pretty much, apart from the odd thing here and there, where my expertise with Blender ends. I reckon it will also be especially helpful to seamlessly make the jump from the older Blender to the new one.

    More free 3d.sk images :)

    @Skofo: You’re right, that’s strange.

Hey guys, I know initially you may be scratching your head, but the training covers a wide introduction to 2.5. From animation, rendering, particles, post processing and a bit of modeling. We are working to make sure this is something great for the beginner and for the bad arse contest winner. :)

Very excited to help out for this contest and see what creations will be made.

What if the winner already pre-ordered the training series? Maybe they’ll get reimbursed? Or maybe get to choose 2 or 3 item’s from Blender’s E-Shop?

If you do win and have the products already purchased from CG Cookie, then yes you would be credited, or reimbursed if you win. I don’t have a say over the other items though, that would be a question for Len running the contest.

@Darell: It would all depend on the individual sponsors hey, however I have no doubt that something would be worked out at the end of the day :)

Guys – does it need to get that complicated? ;) This is called ADVERTISING – just like you winning. It’s for fame, isn’t it? Or is it noone would participate if there was nothing to win?

Prizes are always a nice reward, and it adds extra excitement to a contest like this. Without them I wouldn’t be running it, period. Fame isn’t everything. Personally i would LOVE those prizes! Unfortunately I can’t enter for obvious reasons! :)

Of course the prices are great, I just don’t like that immediate onset of haggling and bickering. But if this doesn’t take the fun out for YOU, I can just ignore it as well :)

So are we allowed to do uv projection painting or is that against the rules?

Hey Redmole, as long as it’s not single image projection, and that one can view your textured model from any angle. Plus it has to be done in Blender of course ;-)

Ben Dansie (currently working on Durian) did some work with regards that, check out his link at the bottom of the contest details.
