In part 2 of this tutorial, we begin modeling the details of the Urban Stairway scene. This tutorial demonstrates many different techniques used for modeling hard-surface objects and creating small details.

Well, it’s looking quite simple, but I think it gonna be really cool… I going to watch te first part now…
Greetings from Brazil!
oops, *I’m going to watch the first part!
Amazing tutorial, I learned an incredible ammount from this!!
Kudos to Kernon!
Oh my god! This is so awesome! Thanks a bunch man!
Sometimes a bit too fast, but although it’ aweessoommee!!
Very cool stuff Kernon. Just one thing I learned from my days working at Ace Hardware – “support ring” = “flange”
Thanks!
Hey, thanks! Glad to hear the feedback.
After Part 3 (finishing the modeling), Part 4 will be a Review of the techniques used during the modeling since I realize that some of it might be a little fast at times. So, all the little tricks will be covered (in real time) during Part 4. Part 3 is done, I just need to encode it.
Haha, “flange”, thanks! I didn’t know what to call it. Believe it or not, I even searched online to try and find what to call it. Support Ring, Ring Support, Ring Thing…
BTW, there is no such thing as a “Basesboard Heater”. Oops.
Hahah! I couldn’t help laughing through the whole video at how lame I am at modeling in comparison with this. You take my worst modeling nightmares and shred them to pieces in a matter of seconds throwing in a few shortcuts and tricks to let me just stare and wonder. Time-lapse makes this feeling even more unbearable
Couldn’t believe there was so much to learn from a single video, hoping I’ll be able to remember at least half of the tricks tomorrow when I put my laughable modeling skills to another test.
BTW the “to do” list idea along with those task numbers all over the place must’ve been quite tedious, yet IMHO well worth the time.
Thank you.
*Impatiently looking out for part 3*
I feel exactly, exactly like Tobey.
Amazing, thanks!
Awesome Tut, just purchased it and D/l’ed twice, but seems the archive is corrupted.
Hi Dave, Thanks for the purchase! It does appear corrupt and I am re-uploading the file right now. It is a chubby file of 680mb, but I will send you an e-mail once it is up and ready.
Cheers,
W
Thanks Wes, got it.
Great as always Kernon! I did have one question though. Understanding that the lighting is temporary here, why did you choose to light it opposite from the window light source seen in the reference image?
We learn ORGANIZING! I never even used the grease pencil before…. time to start
Cheers to part 3!!
Very accurate modeling!
The explanations about all the small details are really good.
Also waiting for the part 3
Thanks for all the great comments!
Creating the ToDo list wasn’t too tedious because I was listing all of the components anyway and realized it might be easier to just have them on-screen instead of on a sheet of paper. It also sort of works like an index when scrubbing through the video. I’m starting to use the Grease Pencil a lot, it’s really become an essential tool.
@Darth-Gimp
I didn’t really think about the actual scene when adding the lighting at this point. I just wanted to light it so the test renders would show what I needed to see. I really try to segment things when working because it’s easy to get distracted when the different stages start to overlap.
Part 3 is completed and should be available sooner than later!
Part 4 will include demonstrations of the more tricky parts seen in parts 2 and 3.
Big ThankYou for Kernon Dillon.
I hope you will add a part (maybe 5) about rendering the scene in LuxRender, because it is a physically-based renderer and is able to produce much more realistic architectural renders than blender internal.
This is great, I’ve learned more here and @ cgcookie in 1 month, than I learned with all the internet tuts out there.
thx guys, keep it up!!!
Yet another great “tutorial”! Keep it up.
Thanks for these great tutorials!
I prefer to download the tutorial first, because of multiple reasons (The pipeline chokes during daytime. secondly, I can watch the video multiple times without having to spend for the bandwidth. Finally, I can show the movie to my children at their own pace.).
However, this movie (and also the “Christmas light” movie) seem to be corrupted: the download stops at 85% (“Access denied”). I tried 3 times, but the download stops at the same point. Please help!
Thanks in advance!
Hi narayan,
I have tested both downloads on my end and they work fine. Is it possible you are running out of bandwidth? Have you tried it on a different computer/network?
Hi Narayan, Sorry to hear about the trouble. I second what Jonathan tested, but if you would like send us your purchase transaction ID via e-mail and we can work to try a few options. Drop us a note at support@cgcookie.com
Cheers,

Monster Modeling…. thanx for the show Kernon.
