Appending nodes allows you to reuse node trees from previous files. This can be a huge time saver, particularly when working with complex setups.

Node-groups can be “linked” as well as “appended.”
A node group (whether linked or appended or made from scratch) can serve in-effect as a very powerful “macro.” Once you have defined it, you can treat it as a single, custom-built node.
I have found that, the more intensely you embrace this concept of “re-using (via linking) something that is defined just once,” the more visually consistent your finished works will be. The human eye has an amazing, and sometimes quite annoying
ability to spot that “something doesn’t look quite right,” and this often turns out to be: inconsistency. Given that two shots which are cut-together side by side might have been produced many weeks apart, this can become a real data management issue… which linking elegantly solves.
